About
OLD SCHOOL BERKELEY-OAKLAND-SF CUSTOM CARPENTRY / RESTORATION -
I am a retired licensed general contractor. Worked for many years all over bay area. Located in East Bay (Albany). I am a one man operation, sometimes I will include a helper. I have done Board and batten, wainscoting, coffered ceilings, false beams, and shiplap walls and ceilings, crown molding and miles of baseboard flooring door and window casing. Understand traditional architextural types. Price really depends on conditions and details. My painting makes my work look ok. A pro painter makes my work look wonderful !
I will come take a look and give a price if the job is not too far away. Otherwise, phone and pictures help to price a project.
Because I am a one-man operation, my prices are competitive, low even. But I am retired, and prefer smaller jobs. I am not as fast as I used to be. I don't go up too high or lift too much. That's why I am available for trim work. More intricate and not so heavy.
I keep the job site clean and safe, covering finished surfaces in my work area. I am punctual and reliable.

My husband and I spoke with about 3 moulding installers and was absolutely impressed with John's knowledge and we hired him. His work and price value is 2nd to none. He did an excellent job. Kept his work area clean and knew exactly what he was doing and brought our crown moulding project to a beautiful finish. We highly recommend him.

John is a highly skilled trim and finish carpenter. He expertly replaced side and head casings in our living room. We were matching the woodwork in previously renovated rooms and had a hard time finding the right header cap. John kindly recommended a substitute that worked well for us. He did a great job for us.

I can not say enough good things about John and his work. He’s meticulous, friendly, and trustworthy. He’s attention to detail really makes him stand out from the rest of the contractors I have used. He completed all the unfinished carpentry work and more we had left from our current remodel. I would recommend John to anyone with confidence. My father use to be a general contractor, and after seeing johns work, he wants John to come over to his house and help with some of his own unfinished projects. Thank you again John!

John was a huge help when we were in a bind and needed a finish carpenter to patch our old craftsman’s wainscoting. He told us exactly what we needed to get, showed up on time, and got the job done in a timely manner. The work turned out beautifully. A perfect match! And we were so happy we hired him to fix something else for us right away. We hope to work with him again soon.

John is just the best. He installed several hundred feet of baseboards and window and door casings for me. He also put up several shiplap walls, and built me some incredible built-in benches and cabinet tops. He was absolutely key to my project success and I’m certain I’ll work with him again. His attention to detail and quality workmanship is hard to find these days. I would give him 10 stars if I could. He’s also great to have around the project site for general advice given his many years of experience in building and carpentry.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My pricing is very simple. For trim, I bill at $3 to $10 per linear foot (depending on the size of the job and complexity) and charge for materials purchased. Sometimes I will add a bit for a long commute.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Hopefully the customer has looked at my profile, read reviews and looked the pictures I have posted. I usually come to the job to observe the conditions and find out the scope of work. I give them a price.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Trained under a master carpenter for two years in the 70's, and studied and received my contractor's license in 1980's. Have been on the job for 40 years.
