Arisel was very responsive and flexible in working with my schedule. They were able to install my ceiling fan where there was previously no fixture or electricity. They did good work and cleaned up after completing the job.

Ricardo is a diligent electrician who genuinely wants to do a good job. He is reasonably priced, knows his stuff and works hard. He is good at planing the times he is available and forecasting how long the project will take. He showed up on time and did the work. At times, you may want to be sure to over earlier specifications when he arrives for the day so there is no miscommunication in what is expected and what will it take to accomplish that. My job was fairly complicated as it involved ceiling, wall, panels and wiring for a variety of devices that are not normally used. I'd hire him again.

Renato has been fantastic. He did a great job painting the ceilings, walls and trims in our bedrooms and hallway. He got the job done when promised and it looks beautiful! He also gave us a bunch of other tips to improve the house/save money, which was excellent. We're having him back soon to help with a number of other jobs, including our bathroom. We hope to have him help us for years to come! Hands down recommend him for any job.

Jasper did an excellent job of designing and building my computer desk and storage unit. On our first meeting he was able to translate the description of what I wanted into a drawing with measurements. On his next visit he confirmed the measurements and proposed workarounds for dealing with challenges such as the room's molding as well as taking a paint sample to match the color of the unit with the room. The results were better than I expected. The unit truly looks built-in with molding around the top that matches the molding in the room. Though it's a floor to ceiling unit, it does not feel overbearing due to the design, color and seamless attachment to walls and ceiling. He was easy to work with when making adjustments in order to accommodate placement of my computer equipment. When I specified what I wanted, I got exactly that. Jason is an extremely competent woodworker and very fast executor. I would highly recommend him.

Garrett and his team did a fabulous job installing pressed tin tile on the ceiling of our store (hiding ugly patches); Garrett took a lot of care during the installation, especially with measuring the area where the tile was going to be placed. I really appreciated how thorough and responsible he was from beginning to end. I highly recommend him and his team for any construction job you might have.

I hired ARCC to paint my ceilings and walls after popcorn ceilings were removed by an asbestos abatement company. It was a logical choice since they were also general contractors. They were very professional with great communication and updates and they finished the job in a timely manner. They also guarantee the work, so when I spotted a minor discoloration days after the work was done, they came back within a few days to do minor touch up. I'm very happy with their service and would use them again for a future job/recommend to friends.

I love Eli, Shmuel and the entire team at Lifetime Remodeling. We had an unexpected leak in the master bath that slowly destroyed our kitchen ceiling. They made an assessment, remodeled the bathroom, fixed the kitchen (and put in money saving/beautiful recessed lights), and left us very happy. When we encountered a problem with the plumbing, most other contractors would have taken advantage and hiked the price. But, they were so professional and everything was still finished on time and in-budget. (My friends tell me that never happens. So now I refer all of them to Lifetime.)

I had Eddie do the framing and wood sheathing for my backyard structure which had a number of odd angles for the ceiling. He does excellent work, very creative in figuring out how to frame the odd angles and a craftsman. He also is very good at reading blueprints and complying with the code requirements. He's easy to work with and comes up with good suggestions. I'd be happy to have him work on my next project.

Nathan Sweetin was wonderful to work with. He was prompt, and if running late he always let us know. He did an excellent job raising the ceiling in our entryway and hallway -- having to handle electrical, duct work, drywall, etc. He also took on several other small jobs. Nathan was friendly, professional and provided quality work. We would highly recommend him for big or small jobs.

My home suffered significant water damage recently due to a faucet plumbing leak while i was away. My upper level flooring soaked up in water, tore thru the ceiling and water got to the downstairs kitchen area, damaged all the laminate, the side walls, kitchen cabinets etc etc. It was horrible. I had lost 60% of my home due to water damage. I had to replace the kitchen cabinets, vanity cabinets, ceiling, the side walls, laminate/tile flooring, had to have my furniture reassembled & put back in their original location. This was essentially a reconstruction/repair and a kitchen/bath remodeling project After researching several contractors for two weeks, i zeroed in on US Creative Builders. I chose them for the following reasons: 1) Matt sounded like a person i could trust. Majority of the contractors were trying to take advantage of my situation preying on my limited knowledge of construction and how insurance worked. Matt was honest about his bid and pretty ok whether he won the bid or not. 2) He was very punctual and professional about his meeting times. He kept his word & showed up each time i had an appointment with him. 3) He had to redo the bid a few times as we discussed the extent of the repairs. He was patient with the whole process 4) He offered full service. He guided me through the materials, took care of moving my existing furniture away for construction and then moving them back post construction 5) His prices & the timing of work completion were very reasonable. I then signed up to work with Matt. His crew worked nearly 6 days a week, 10 hours a day. They were there in the morning at 7:30am and worked till 6pm and they got the job done in 4 weeks, much faster than what the other contractors had promised. There were plenty of things i liked about their work: 1. First & foremost the overall quality of construction 2. They kept their promise, completed the work on time 3. Matt's calm & cool composure. He always valued my satisfaction over money or time. 4. Their flexibility -- to go visit local stores to pick up the materials as we tried/retried various options, accommodate any minor changes/deviation from original plan without any fuss 4. Matt's reasonable pricing of upgrades/changes which were not originally planned I am thrilled i chose Matt's services and i would enthusiastically recommend his services for home repair/reconstruction

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
