Carol D. says, "Not sure this box is big enough to list all the positive comments I have for Creative Landscapes and how pleased we are with the work that was done. Martin was a real pleasure to work with and I enjoyed his sense of humor. Needless to say I would highly recommend this company for any landscape work and if I could give more stars I certainly would. When I initially reached out for a quote, Martin contacted me right away and came by within a day to discuss the scope of the project in more detail and to see the actual area to ensure the quote he provided was as accurate as possible. The specs were for a front sitting area that was initially to be 8' x 10' (ended up being 10' x 17') as well as a tree and flowers/shrubs to be planted. He provided me with a few quotes based on the different types of material to be used because we hadn't made a final decision on what to use for either the base or wall. I'd obtained a few other quotes as well, but found the ones from Creative Landscapes were either lower or still very competitive. Ultimately I feel we We discussed the pros and cons of using pavers versus flagstone as well as whether a block wall or a wall with stucco would look best for the overall look. I was impressed that he noted the color (beige) of our existing stone wall along the driveway should have really been a grey stone since our house is a gray. It's this type of attention to detail that I felt was a real asset for someone managing my project to have. While he would make recommendations/suggestions, the final decision(s) were always up to us to make. While the majority of work was done by Martin himself, he did bring in help as needed. For example, he brought in a person who's expertise is to install block walls to do that work. Even though I'd been provided a quote, I'd also told Martin I had a budget that I wanted to stay within. So he especially went out of his way to look for ways to keep the costs at a minimum. Yet was still able to find a quality flagstone as well as the perfect color wall caps at reasonable prices. Martin even did incidental work. One day he sprayed our lawn to kill the dandelions and then fixed some sprinklers that weren't spraying correctly. Also took the time to explain and show me how to change the spray pattern and direction on the sprinklers so I could maintain them as necessary. Even provided me with a little tool that certainly makes it easy to do. Having this additional knowledge is really invaluable to someone like me who likes to be self sufficient whenever possible. Even our neighbors who had been watching as the project progressed and were very impressed with the quality of work and overall look it added to the house. When I am ready to do my backyard landscaping, this will be the only company I call. Thank you Martin for turning our vision into a beautiful reality! Carol D."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need to rototill before laying sod?

Whether you rototill before laying sod depends on your preference, but your ground needs to be prepared for the sod to take root in the soil. A rototiller makes it easy to till up compacted earth so that new sod can easily take hold, but there are other methods you can do. Consult with a sodding professional to discuss which preparation steps should take place before laying sod.

Who can lay sod near me?

Landscapers and sod installation specialists can lay sod. When choosing a professional to lay sod in your yard, read their ratings and reviews from customers. Also, search for photos that showcase actual work done by the pro. And always get cost estimates from several sodding professionals so you can get an idea of how much you should pay for their services.

When should you lay sod?

Sod can be laid any time of the year, though the best time to do so is in the spring or early fall. During this time, temperatures are cooler but grass is still growing.

Summer isn’t ideal for laying sod (but still possible), as the high temperatures demand extra watering that can not only drive up your water bill. It can also make conditions ideal for mold and fungi.

Can you lay sod over existing grass?

There are differing opinions about this topic, which is why you should talk to a sodding professional near you to find out if it’s possible to lay sod over your particular lawn. In some cases, it might be possible. For example, some professionals say the new sod will kill the existing grass underneath and release nutrients that will benefit the new sod.

However, others believe the old grass will disrupt the sod's ability to take root in the soil, and it will die due to a lack of nutrients.

How much does it cost to sod your yard?

If you plan on sodding your yard, expect to pay between $250 and $1,250. You can get a better idea of your own cost by requesting free estimates from sodding professionals near you and calculating the square footage of your yard. Other factors will also affect your cost, including delivery prices, any prep work that needs to be done and additional labor costs.
