Guojian Gao says, "This review is specifically about Mr. Solomon E. We recently called Golden Retrofit to do a foundation inspection to determine if the foundation of our property needed any repairs. Mr. Solomon came for the inspection, and he did a great job. Below are some highlightsGreat communication and Punctuality: Solomon reminded me the day before the appointment, then informed me again about 20min before his arrival on the day of the inspection.Thoroughness: Solomon did a very thorough inspection both inside and around the property, even got into places that I didnt know existed before.Knowledgeable and educational: Solomon explained everything to me in plain English, and educated me on what to look out for and how to identify potential foundation issues and showed me some easy ways to monitor and identify potential issues. I learned a lot from him.Honesty: after all of his detailed and hard work, he told me that there was nothing to worry about foundation of our property now and there was no need to do any repairs. It was such a fantastic experience. I will definitely use Solomons service again and will recommend anyone to use his service."See more

Ishani C. says, "Martin and his team were amazing to work with, and I highly recommend them for your carpentry needs! For years, my husband and I have looked for a solution to the dangerous steps in our backyard. More important than our own safety, we have two hyperactive dogs who love to play in the backyard, and whenever it's time for them to come in, our momentarily skips a beat as they jump up the steps and into the house. My husband does his best to avoid the situation by carrying our two 70lb rescued pit bulls in and out of the house, but it's not always possible. After doing a ton of research looking for heavy-duty ramps that could support large dogs and people safely, we realized that there wasn't much on the market, and we'd need to create a custom job. I posted the requirements on Thumbtack, and after speaking with about 10 people, Martin stood out above the rest due to his attention to detail, the quality of the questions he asked, and his overall care for the project. While most people looked at a picture of the steps and simply quoted a price, Martin and I had a detailed back-and-forth where he learned about what I was looking for, and although he gave rough estimates, he would need to come out and take measurements and look at the structure before he could truly provide a quote. While some people may have viewed that as a red flag, I had the opposite perspective and viewed it as a great sign because I knew that the stairs and surrounding concrete were irregularly shaped and needed to be seen in person before formulating a plan. When Martin and his team arrived to take measurements, Martin had already done additional research based on images of example ramps I had sent him, so it was very easy for us to get on the same page in terms of what we were thinking for the final product. After looking at the structure and taking measurements, Martin went to a nearby hardware store, bought all the materials, and came back and built the exact ramp we were looking for in under 5 hours. Not only did he take extra care to make sure it met all our requirements, but he did the little things that showed great attention to detail and pride in his craft to make sure that we had the best ramp possible. We are extremely happy with the end product, and so are our dogs. We are very grateful to Martin and his team and would definitely work with them in the future."See more

Ben P. says, "Just like the saying goes: it's hard to find a good remodeling company. But we got lucky with Ivy Builders! We used Travis and his crew a little before Covid 19 hit (back in January 2020) to remodel our 1970's old kitchen. During the whole kitchen remodeling Travis and his men had made it Super Easy for my husband and I --from designing the kitchen, different options of the kitchen cabinets, to different colors of the countertops. They even brought sample kitchen materials for us to see at our house to choose-- This really helped us save some time driving around to different places checking out materials. We were so happy with the result of our new kitchen and how hassle free the whole kitchen project was. We even added new flooring and bolted down our entire house. Thanks to Ivy Builders we were able to live comfortably during the whole stay at home Covid-19 quarantine. Now Fast forward to now, after a couple of years of using our new kitchen I called Travis to come back and help us relocate the kitchen air vent from one spot in the kitchen to another spot . And Travis agreed and honored his kitchen remodeling guarantee of ONE yr and relocated our air vent for FREE! And the next day he sent his guy Guillermo and took care of it right away! I honestly loved how quickly Travis worked his magic for his customers and his workers always does an excellent job! I am truly thankful that I found Ivy Builders on our first remodeling project! This company is a One stop shop for remodeling newbies like us, who wanted to remodel their house but doesn't know how/where to start. I highly recommend Ivy Builders for anyone that is thinking of remodeling their house, Travis will take care of you."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best sealer to use on concrete?

Because unsealed concrete is porous, it readily absorbs liquids, leading to unsightly stains and freeze-and-thaw cycle damage. For this reason, it’s important to seal concrete that will see spills or outdoor weather.

The best option for garage floors and other high-traffic areas is epoxy, which forms a hard and extremely durable surface on top of concrete. Epoxy, acrylic, and polishes are often used on indoor floors, while acrylic-resin sealers and reactive penetrating sealers are used on outdoor surfaces to repel water and salt. Locate a concrete contractor in your area to help find the best solution.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

What can concrete contractors do?

Concrete contractors can build foundations, structures, driveways, concrete storm drains, raise or level concrete patios and much more. They can handle every step of the process, starting with framing the mold that the concrete is poured into. They then cut, assemble and tie together the rebar, giving the concrete its tensile strength. Finally, they pour the concrete in, mixing and conditioning it to ensure it cures properly. They will also take steps to ensure that no air pockets are trapped within it.

If you have a project that requires the help of a concrete contractor, reach out to one today to get a price estimate.

Is it better to stain or paint concrete?

A concrete paint cover is typically opaque and covers up the color of the concrete. This means it provides significant protection to the concrete below. However, if it is improperly applied or subjected to heavy traffic, a painted concrete floor is likely to chip and peel.

Epoxy and staining are two types of concrete floor sealer. Epoxy is a more durable but often more expensive option than a concrete stain. Epoxy forms a protective layer, while concrete stain is more decorative and requires more maintenance. Because epoxy can be more expensive than concrete stain, it is best used in high-traffic areas or in applications where low maintenance is desired.

A concrete stain, on the other hand, is quick to apply and can show off the textures of the concrete, but it does not provide a high degree of protection for the concrete against spills, salt, water and other contaminants. Staining concrete generally requires a dust mop, a pH-neutral cleaner and water to clean, while epoxy can cause resin buildup that necessitates the use of special detergents.

Find a concrete contractor near you for help selecting the right floor concrete sealer.

What is the best finish for concrete floors?

The best finish for concrete floors depends on your personal taste. An acid stain is a bold, varied look with lots of texture and the potential for earthy tones and a natural stone appearance. A water-based stain might not last as long as an acid stain, but it gives you the choice of many different colors. Epoxy is great for high-traffic areas, kitchens, bathrooms, basements and garages. It provides a glossy, damage-resistant, non-slip coating on your concrete floors. To find out which finish is the best for your concrete floors, contact a concrete contractor near you.
