Repair of undersink water lines and hot water thermostat. Kevin was fantastic. He helped me figure out what was going on by first talking to me on the phone to see what the problem was. Despite my lack of knowledge, he took up 30 minutes of his time on the phone to help me figure out how to fix my hot water heater problem. After wading through a lot of road traffic, he repaired our plumbling lines and toilet stopper (he picked one up for us).

I had a bathroom lighting fixture in a rental house that required repair. It was a small job. Arisel met me at the house on time and was prepared for the job. He was professional, articulate, and completed the work in a timely manner. I learned about other types of work that he was able to do and I will not hesitate to hire Arisel in the future. I highly recommend Arisel. Hire this man, you will NOT be disappointed.

Amazing! Juan completed a job that two other electricians could not (and one at All Star Wiring still charged me for no results). There was old wiring at my 112 year-old house, and Juan was able to find old insulation that needed repair. I could not be more pleased. Also, he replaced two lower-wattage circuit breakers that should hopefully solve the issue of constant tripping due to space heaters. I look forward to hiring Juan to install ceiling fans and other jobs in future. Don't mess around - hire him, and he will politely, quickly and efficiently fix your issue. He definitely did not try to fleece me as some other "pros" quoted.

We submitted our project request on Thumbtack due to all the sudden the water heater was not enough after 10 years of usage. Tony replied my project the same night and willing to come the next day, which is weekend. And his price was very reasonable and we were very satisfied with his service. I will contact Tony for my future repair and maintainence need. Thank you very much, Tony.

One of the first things Gleo told me was that he had a regular job and would be able to work on weekends. He did two jobs for me at a rental. One was installing a medicine cabinet and interior lock. He did not complete repair of drywall repair by the cabinet. The other job was installation of a security door. He installed the medicine cabinet, lock and security door in a good manner. He did not complete an addition to the bottom of the security door. He was pleasant, on time, cleaned up well, and cooperative but for the incomplete items. I wanted him to paint a bath in S.F. at another rental but, he did not give me an estimate (perhaps too far away). Manelis Properties

Max provided an amazing service. Everything about his was professional, friendly, capable and service oriented. His charge was extremely reasonable for the work he did. Not only did he effectively fix my furnace, he also did a great job as a plumber. I really appreciate that he made it a fixed price job - so I knew exactly how much my charge was going to be, and everything was completely transparent. There were several cases where he could have charged me more, or suggested a higher priced service, but he didn't. Max was outstanding both in his capability and service level. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone!

Craig cleaned our windows inside and out with great care and thoroughness. He also cleaned the screens and replaced them properly and locked the windows. He recommended a repair company for our broken screens (The Screen Guys) and brought all the right equipment, including multiple size ladders, for hard-to-reach second story windows. We will definitely call AllStar Windows for future window-cleaning. Highly recommend his company.

My husband and I had to renovate the home for AIRBNB and we had to get everything organize in a timely manner. Davis showed up promptly to help us clean the house and redo the rooms. He also went out of his way to assist us with prepping the living room. We totally recommend him for anyone who needs a reliable handyman.

Excellent job A+. The body of the house is done in a flat paint named "Covered in Platinum", the accent color is blue "China Clay", and the trim is semi-gloss "white". We called to schedule an appointment with the painter via phone. He mentioned that they work with Dunn-Edwards paint. We went online and then to the Hayward paint store. At the store, the woman sat down and discussed the paint color wheel with me. She pointed out that yellows and reds fade, paints with hints of green will become very green, and pink tones come out bright pink. We got paint samples and the painter put up a few colors as part of the price. Painter representative Nicole came to the home a few days after we scheduled the painting. She collected the deposit via check. She also did a walkthrough of the property to take photos of the exterior areas that needed repairs. Vents: The attic vents needed extreme repair as we had 15 birds that got into the vents. The painter was able to get the bird nests out with no harm to the birds. He was able to replace all of the vent covers. Painter: 1. Free quote given. (Deposit due) 2. Friday: Collect deposit, take photos 3. Monday: Power wash 4. Tuesday: Holiday 5. Wednesday: Repairs 6. Thursday: Body of the house and accent color 7. Friday: trim, doors, touch up (Remaining balance due) Painter did the work during business hours. The neighbors have already complimented the colors and quality of the job. The painter is well-trained as a third generation painter. You can tell in the skill and ability that he cares about his job and the end product. He included repairs in the price and treated the job with dignity and respect. The final outcome is amazing. His quote was competitive with other painters but a few hundred less because he includes the repairs in the bid. Other painters were trying to nickel and dime us by negotiating every repair. He was the best for the job after 5 bids. He is a person of his word, he kept to the schedule, and included all the bells and whistles. I recommend him to anyone who wants to get the job done right.

We were thrilled with M.P. Movers. Marquis Philip was responsive to messages, showed up on time, moved things from one place and Ikea to our home 1-1/2 hours away and assembled an Ikea day bed. He is reliable, a hard worker and a very nice guy. He did an excellent job. We would hire him again, and will refer him to others.

The main circuit panel in my home is old and home inspector asked me to get it changed and upgraded to a 200 Amp panel. I found Mike through thumbtack. He came by and asked me a few questions regarding my bill and the appliances at my home. Then he recommended that I just change the breakers instead of changing the complete panel, since my consumption is quite low and it would be unnecessary to do the upgrade. This option was significantly cheaper than upgrading the panel and his reasoning made complete sense. I appreciate this feedback and finding the right solution for me instead of upgrading the panel. I gave the contract to him and he got the job done. Overall a very good experience. I highly recommend mike and tri-phase electric.

Fantastic experience with Salamat. I hired him to assist with some shelving installation, and he was punctual, communicative, and asked the right questions throughout the project to make sure it was done perfectly. Where I had questions about how to proceed, he was ready with helpful suggestions. He was so quick and efficient that we ended up having him assist with a few other repairs around the home, and are already planning future projects that we’ll hire him for. Highly recommended!

Where to begin, Nick owner of Klein’s Custom Woodwork. Has serious passion for his craft. It’s rare nowadays to find good people that are into building decks, patios, wood finisings, and a craft for building anything you need for your home. I can say that I purchased a new home in Marina, Ca. Spoke to Nick about what I needed done in my empty back yard. His creative mind on what I was looking for went from a dream to a reality. He was very detailed, meticulous, and knew exactly what to do when it came to building my new patio deck. Klein’s Custom Woodwork is worth his time and craftsmanship to attention to detail. I would recommend him for any wood work you need done at home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
