Response Time: Quick. Ed responded immediately with all questions I had. Additionally, I called to discuss the task over the phone and he was very friendly and accommodating. Arrival/Appearance: One of his senior techs called when he was on his way and he requested if it was okay to come early because he was in the area, which was great for me. When his tech arrived, he was very professional and dressed appropriately. Service Provided: Cleaned air ducks and replaced filter. Cleaned up after himself. Tech Comments: His tech was very friendly and explained every detail of what he was doing. He confirmed the quote that was provided and continued with the agreed upon work. I asked him a few questions about my HVAC and he was very knowledgeable and provided me with all the details that I needed. He also explained everything about my HVAC system, which was well-needed information. I highly recommend this company!

I got an extremely prompt response from Sam's Services when I first sent my request out in Thumbtack. I was able to make an appointment for the day and time I wanted. The day of my appointment I received a message that the technician was on the way. He came to the door and introduced himself and put on shoe covers to protect my floors. He had the parts needed to fix my dishwasher door and it was done quickly and perfectly. He had me check to make sure everything was to my satisfaction. I had thought of another appliance that I needed an adjustment to and he was able to do that on this visit, too. My dryer door needed to be changed so that it opened from the other side. No parts were needed, but it took some time and effort. This was done with care and then I was again shown what had been done and to make sure all was to my satisfaction. I was very satisfied with the service and would use Sam's Services again and also recommend Sam's Services for anyone requiring an appliance repair and they also do HVAC service.

Paul came next day and was right on time. He was extremely knowledgeable about the unit we had where other hvac technicians shyed away from the job claiming it was "too complicated". He found the problem right away and was kind enough to explain the unit to me and how it worked. It was a quick fix and now we have cold air again! I would reccomend Paul to anyone needing air conditioning repait.

I saved for months for a new HVAC system and then called the HVAC company that gave me the original diagnosis to have my HVAC replaced. They never replied or called backed so I contacted TCS. Turns out, no new system was needed! The TCS tech came out, cleaned my system, with a few other minor fixes and HVAC starting working again at a fraction of the cost! I would recommend TCS. They are reliable and are super honest, which is hard to find. Thanks TCS!

Max showed up on time and was really friendly. His positive demeanor immediately put me at ease. He took his time (which I appreciate) and looked over our blower unit. I was convinced that it was a blown motor. Luckily it was just a capacitor. Once again, he did not rush. He fixed that problem plus he located the wire that was causing the capacitor to burn up. However, he only charged me the labor to replace the capacitor. He was great about cleaning up his work. There are so many sleazy people in the HVAC business, but Max is one of the good guys. I'd call him again in a heartbeat.

Jason Roskelley is outstanding. I met him recently through my general contractor where he installed an entire home HVAC system in my Lake San Marcos home remodel. Everything works great!. Very reasonable for a complete system. I also had Jason out to fix my existing A/C from 2002 at my towhome in Rancho Carillo. I was worried because it was an older A/C unit. Based on the symptoms I described to Jason on the phone he had a good idea what it could be. He came out verified promptly and on time, diagnosed,, and had my A/C working again blowing super cold air. Very reasonable prices. Great personality. Call Jason if you want personal service, good pricing, and an honest fix for your HVAC system. Feel free to message me with any questions about Jason's work.

Vern came out on a Sunday and did not charge me extra. He tested my A/C , replacing part and repaired within 30 minutes. He checked my heating and replaced filter for no charge. He is the last of the breed who really cares about service. He even showed me pictures of his granddaughter. Do yourself a favor and call the man.

Power surges suck! Just the other day a car crashes into a power pole around the corner from where I live and the resulting surge from the exploding transformer burned through every charger and clock I had plugged directly into the wall as well as my fridge, oven and washer. I decided to give OC Appliance Masters a call and make an appointment for him to check things out the next day. I get a nice two hour window vs the 4 hour window that I've been accustomed to from previous experiences with professional service guys for fixing HVAC, electric, plumbing, cable etc. I spoke to Nick and he says he can call an hour or half an hour before the arrival time. Another plus. I was going to be home all day so I was okay with the half hour heads up call. On the day of the service Nick calls me earlier than expected and says he was able to finish his earlier appointment and if I'm available he can come earlier. I'm all for that! Who enjoys biding their time waiting for a service person? Not me. The sooner the better plus my fridge wasn't getting any cooler. When he arrives, he was a whirling dervish of information regarding possible culprits for what could be ailing my appliances and is listing them out as he's working on my fridge. He tells me he was a electrical engineer and will find out what the problem is. It turned out it was the controller board and he was able to give me an estimate immediately without saying he'd have to check the price for the part etc. This was a nice change from the other guys I've dealt with that don't say a word and have to crunch the numbers. What it told me was that he had experience with this issue before. He also had the part on hand and could get the unit back and running in no time. I was sold. After that, he also serviced the fridge's coils, at no extra charge, which were cluttered up with years of cat fur which he was shocked at seeing as he opened up my fridge's service panel. The next item he looked at was my stove/oven. Given what he saw with my fridge, his prognosis even before opening the stove/oven was that it would be expensive and I could be better off looking for a new oven but we'll look anyway. Turns out he was right. The digital display panel and control board were shot and would cost $700 if I wanted to have it fixed. Thank you for your honesty. Finally the dishwasher. Lo and behold, same problem as the others, burned out control board. Good news was that it was more reasonable to fix and wasn't going to cost as much as a new unit. Bad news was he didn't have the part on hand but we arranged for him to get the part and return to fix it later next week. The biggest take away from him during the service call was the preventative advice from Nick. Place ALL your expensive appliances on a SURGE PROTECTOR from now on. This is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me and this includes even when I was living in Denver and we would have some nasty thunderstorms that would cause power fluctuations like nobody's business so it never occurred to me to put anything except my computer and entertainment system on a nice surge protector. That's all changed now. All in all, it's hard finding a trustworthy appliance repair person. I read some of the positive reviews as well as the negative reviews of the well reviewed appliance service techs for the area and decided to take a chance with OC Masters and I'm very pleased with the results. I'm also glad that I'm dealing with a family owned and operated business since Nick and his brother are the guys who are doing all the work. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Danny assessed the work to be done, took care of it, and even helped give me some suggestions on other odds and ends things completely unrelated to this job. Also, I did not understand that the existing pipe within the wall was already code compliant. He could have taken me for a ride replacing that pipe and charging me thousands and I'd have never known better. He was straight forward with me that the pipe in the wall is correct, and only the short run of pipe running from the water heater to the wall needed to be replaced.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

      • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
      • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
      • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
      • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
        • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
      • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
        • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
      • Your home has humidity problems.
      • Your home has excessive dust.
        • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
      • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
        • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
      • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
        • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
