Not that long ago I had a rough experience with the campus police department. Due to the fact that I was late to one of my classes I irrationally decided to use a disabled placard. After I returned to my car a police officer was waiting for me. The ticket which he issued stated that it was a misdemeanor. I was devastated and did not know what to do. A few weeks later when I decided to request some quotes from criminal defense attorneys. Unlike the rest Christopher did not mention a very high price and offered to arrange a meeting on Saturday. It was important for me to find an experienced attorney, because at that time I was in the process of acquiring my citizenship. As a result of his diligent and outstanding job, on the day of my interview there was nothing in the Court system regarding my ticket. Hence, the officer conducting the interview did not bother including this ticket to the application, because she read a letter explaining the issue (which could potentially have an impact on my case, possibly denying it). I am very glad that my family hired Chris. He is always polite, professional, and patient. I will definitely refer everyone who needs criminal defense. If you want the best service, do not waste your time looking for it elsewhere. Thank you again Chris and best wishes.

My wife and I were in desperate need of a Bankruptcy Attorney fast, due to being in the middle of a lawsuit from our creditors. I knew nothing about Bankruptcy and was very nervous. I talked to 4 different Attorneys, but Erika was by far the most comforting. She walked me and my wife through the process step by step and made sure we were at ease. She was reachable by text/calls/email all the time if i had questions. I like to think she wasn't just doing her job but it felt more like i had a family member that was a Bankruptcy Attorney. After it was all over, it was just like she said it would be, Lawsuit gone, debit gone, stress gone. We got our life back. Erika, i can't thank you enough. Rick Brown.

I went into the courthouse in the lowest mental state I have ever experienced, and I came out like the weight of the world was lifted from my shoulders. His knowledge and experience in family law, combined with his friendly personality made everyone involved in the case, including the other party's attorney, so much more calm and compliant. When explaining information that was difficult for me to understand, he never made me feel inferior or rushed. I have worked with many other attorneys, but I will only recommend Scott.

Sharon Ghatan is fantastic!!! My daughter had a serious DUI case and 3 misdemeanors. She was looking a serious charges. She worked her magic with the DA and dropped two charges, got her classes and a probation, she also can get her probation terminated early and her record expunged in only a year. Sharon treated my daughter as her own, Her staff, Manuel, was a pleasure to deal with always helpful and professional. I really enjoyed working with them and they really care about their clients. Sharon was worth every penny and her fee was very reasonable compared to other attorneys we consulted with before her and she was the most caring and explained everything is why we chose her. I am very grateful to her for all she did for my daughter and if I ever need an attorney again I know she is the best.

I met with Miguel and the attorney at San Fernando Court where we spent the whole morning on an Ex parte on parental kidnapping by the mother (Mexico) and seeking paternity for me the father because the Birth Certificate was incomplete. I must say that they both are dedicated to helping their clients, they are affordable and with lots of experience. I highly recommend Miguel and the attorney. They will stick with you until the end."

Zack is a fellow attorney in OC that I've known for years. He is tough as nails and a no non-sense guy. He is incredibly persistent in pursuing motions and never lets th DA's off the hook. I really admire that. That's what you need in a defense attorney in OC because so many attorneys here are weak and not aggressive. Not Zack. He is thorough, knowledgeable and experienced.

If you are searching for a bankruptcy lawyer or just considering filing for bankruptcy, you need to call Jennifer Jones. I wasn't sure if I should even consider bankruptcy, but I called Jennifer for a consultation on what it entails. Not only did she answer all of my questions accurately and honestly, but she educated me on other positive aspects of filing that I had not known. After hiring her, every time I had a question or concern, she got back to me within minutes via email, text, or phone call. One of the most efficient and hardworking people I have ever met. She showed that she truly cared about me and my situation, and is extremely knowledgeable about the bankruptcy laws. During your search for bankruptcy lawyers you will find cheaper lawyers, but trust me, it's not worth it. It is totally worth paying just a little extra to hire Jennifer because she takes you by the hand and walks you through the very complex and complicated process of filing for bankruptcy. Thank you so much, Jennifer!

Sevan is amazing and all about the client!!! He made me feel very comfortable with my situation, when others I consulted with made me feel ashamed. He’s attentive, follows through, and always updated me on all the steps. He’s very knowledgeable and knows how to communicate with examples, so you clearly get it. He even gave me tips on budgeting and saving so that I am more aware of my habits from here on out. I highly recommend him, and would give 10 stars if possible.

Men of quality and integrity. They cared about the most minute details that others would skip past. They really took the time to listen. They spoke and stood by their words till the very end. You can tell that they care about you and that it’s not just about the money. I was involved in a car accident where I was rear ended so hard that my head slammed into the steering wheel and my back was killing me. Simon and Joseph took the time to help me find the best medical care for my needs. The insurance company made pathetic settlement offers and these guys took them to court and put them in their place. Safe to say that the results were impeccable. Highly recommended! If I could give them 10 stars, I would! Compass Law Group has the Best Personal Injury Attorneys in town!!!

I have an extensive experience of working with different immigration attorneys not only as an immigrant, but also as an immigration specialist. I worked with multiple attorneys, few different law firms both when I had no idea how US immigration law works and later when immigration became my passion and career. Genie is one of the attorneys that I would absolutely recommend to everyone. She is knowledgeable, experienced, responsive and really responsible for your case. She will not let you fail. She is always on the client's side and acts immediately. If you want to hire a trusted attorney, Genie is a great choice. Thank you, Joanna

I was extremely satisfied with the outcome of my case. I was facing felony theft charges and I though I was going to lose my job. Attorney Gracia went above and beyond the call and I was able to get my case dismissed. I was kept up to date with my case and I never had any trouble reaching her office. Very stern and professional in the courthouse. I definitely got my money's worth -Jeffrey S

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

What is a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer fights on your behalf if you’ve been injured physically, psychologically, economically or in reputation. This injury may be the result of neglect or malicious intent of another person, or it could be at the hands of a business, government or other entity. Personal injury lawyers specialize in tort law, which is the law of civil wrongs like car accidents, company wrongdoing, unlawful imprisonment and more.

To become qualified to be a personal injury lawyer in the United States, a person must earn a bachelor’s degree, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from a law school. Most states then require the person to pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law. Unlike many attorneys who require a retainer, personal injury lawyers often work on contingency fees. This means that in lieu of payment upfront, they receive an agreed-upon percentage of the settlement in case of a win.

What should you look for in a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer will advocate for your legal rights if you’ve been hurt in an accident at work or in daily life, have suffered from medical malpractice, or are struggling to have your insurance carrier cover your needs. It may be helpful to talk with two or three lawyers before selecting one. When looking for a personal injury lawyer, research their reviews and make sure former clients have had good experiences with them. Next, make sure the personal injury lawyer has experience and proven success winning cases similar to yours. Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to provide services in your state. When you find a qualified personal injury lawyer with whom you want to work, freely discuss payment and fees before any work begins. Most lawyers offer a free consultation to learn what your case is about and explain their rates. Personal injury attorneys typically receive a percentage of your settlement (called a contingency fee), so they are paid after the trial or case is complete. Keep in mind that some attorneys have fees that you must pay even if you don’t win your trial. It’s important to understand these details before work begins so you don’t have any unhappy surprises later. Lastly, it’s wise to choose a personal injury lawyer that you have confidence in and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.

How do you find a good immigration lawyer?

Research is key to finding a good immigration lawyer. The immigration process can be overwhelming and complex, so a trustworthy advocate is critical. When you have identified several eligible candidates, verify their immigration law license to protect yourself and your finances. Once you have a set of licensed immigration lawyers in mind, choose one based on these considerations:

    • Mutual respect: You want an immigration lawyer who treats you and your family with kindness and consideration. You’ll do the same for them.
    • Availability: Before hiring, note if they have responded promptly to your emails and calls. You don’t want to hire someone you have to chase around.
    • Proven success: Read former client reviews and research their success rate with cases similar to yours.
    • Transparent rates: Ask directly about what their rates are, how they bill, and what they estimate your legal fees will be. Ask if they will sign a fee agreement, and get receipts for all fees paid.
    • Verify who will handle your case: Sometimes junior lawyers work on firm cases. This is okay, as long as you have discussed it and are comfortable with it. When junior lawyers or paralegals are working on your case, ask if the hourly rate is lower.
    • Be wary of anyone who promises you specific results: No case is certain, and the immigration lawyer should be honest about what you can expect.

How much does an immigration lawyer cost?

Immigration lawyers are experts in the nuances of the highly complex United States immigration system. They help clients of all backgrounds petition for immigration status and become U.S. citizens, and can represent clients who are facing deportation or detention. Nationally, the cost people pay for immigration lawyers averages $500-$1,010. The services you need will have a huge effect on your costs. For routines cases, such as applying for a travel visa, an immigration lawyer may be able to confidently quote you a set price, while more open-ended cases may be billed at an hourly rate of $200-$500, or more, depending on the reputation and experience of the firm and lawyer. Before hiring an immigration lawyer, ask what their plan for your case is and what expected costs may be. Many immigration lawyers work from retainers, and request a set amount of money upfront from which to work. For example, a lawyer who charges $300 per hour may estimate $4,000 for a standard family-based immigration case, the common process in which a U.S. citizen petitions for permanent residency for their spouse, fiancee or family members.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
