Introduction: I use a holistic point of view when I am training a dog. I take into account diet, exercise, and everyday stressors, all while assessing what has been rewarding the dog for unwanted behaviors (or inadvertently punishing the dog for desired behaviors). I always keep the dog's emotional state and personal preferences in mind. What might be rewarding for most dogs (ex: petting or exuberant praise) may be terrifying to another dog. What may be unpleasant for certain dogs, may be another dog's preference. Paying attention to the dog's emotional state allows you to make faster progress, and also allows for more permanent learning by ensuring that the dog is not too stressed or too excited to retain the training. Using emotional states and environmental rewards also reduces the reliance on tangible rewards (food and toys). I LOVE seeing a dog who previously had to be cooped up due to fear, anxiety, reactivity, or aggression transform into a dog who can now be taken on enjoyable walks. Watching a dog realize for the first time that they don't HAVE to bark and lunge (or run and hide) when they see a dog (or stranger, or bike, etc) is the most amazing thing, and it warms my heart every time. The bond someone makes while rehabilitating their dog is just incredible, and I am truly blessed to be part of its forging.

My dogs started training with Kate about a year ago when bf and I enrolled our newly adopted pup in a Petsmart training class. Kate is always upbeat, knowledgeable, and passionate about dog behavior. She's adept at training dogs and owners, as well as newer Petsmart trainers. When she started her own business we decided to continue with private lessons, Country Club, and Reactives Anonymous for both dogs. From underlying behavior issues to nutrition she connects the dots to form a holistic view of dog behavior. I like that she does not follow only one school of dog behavior training. She constantly learns and applies techniques that work well for you and your dog. Without getting too off track from this review, I will say she has changed the way I think about my dogs, even as someone who has raised and worked with animals for much of my life. She is so so insightful, always learning and excited to share her knowledge. Just follow her on Facebook and you'll learn something new!

We have a rescued German Shepherd Cattle Dog mix found in Riverside with some emotional problems. She's a scared dog and lunged barks at some people and other dogs. Going to Kate has helped her tremendously! She now doesn't bark at people passing by on her walks and doesn't bark and lunge at other dogs. I highly recommend Kate as a dog trainer. She gives us lots of tips and insights into our dog's behavior and trains us as well as our dog.

Kate has been working with me and my over reactive German Shepherd Max. She has dramatically improved a behavioral issue with other dogs which at times I felt was hopeless. She has accomished huge results in a short period of time with kindness and patience. Her knowledge of dog behavior is very impressive and she is a pleasure to work with. Max loves her! She is a true professional and really cares about you and your dog. I have no doubt Max would not have made the progress he has if it weren't for Kate!

Kate is one of the most well-educated, caring, and amazing trainers out there! She works very hard to make her clients happy, and has results to prove it! She is worth well more than what she charges, so take advantage of her excellent knowledge! You will not be disappointed!!

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I regularly attend seminars, workshops, and conferences. I also read the latest scientific articles and journals, dog training books, watch various seminars and at-home training courses on DVD, and participate in various discussion forums with my peers.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I had wanted to be a veterinarian since I was 5 years old. Being a "cat person," I thought it would be a great idea to learn more about dogs by mentoring under a dog trainer for the retail company at which I was employed. Once I started working with dogs, I instantly became a "dog person." I abandoned my efforts to become a vet and instead continued to study everything I could get my hands on about dog training. Now I've had my own company for 1 year and I've worked with approximately 2,000 dogs in the 7 years that I've been training.
