Emil is proactive – he takes care of everything. Until I started working with Emil, I’d always used a simple bookkeeper because I didn’t think I needed a CPA. But Emil is a knowledgeable guy – a very knowledgeable guy — and his expertise has helped me with taxes, setting up with separate corporations to purchase and lease equipment, and right now he’s even helping one of my employees bring my minutes up to date. Best of all, he’s proactive. No waiting until the last minute! He calls me in plenty of time to make sure I’m where I need to be so there’s no last-minute surprise. He is personable, a pleasure to work with, and always take good care of me in terms of both corporate and business taxes.

As a small business owner, I want to focus my time and energy on growing my business and generating more revenue. GoFigure has been a fantastic partner that has grown with us. Instead of focusing on tasks like bookkeeping, paying invoices and reconciling our accounts, Jamie and his team have taken these functions over for me, which has freed up valuable hours for me to focus on growing my business. I’d highly recommend GoFigure to any entrepreneur who needs more hours in the day!

I've been doing my own taxes my entire life using TurboTax. After some big life changes, I finally decided to see a professional to get some guidance, or at least make sure I'm not screwing anything up. I'm very happy I did. Carmen was quick, knowledgeable, friendly, and affordable. What seemed like complicated to me just rolled off her back like nothing. She got my taxes done super quickly and I didn't have to think twice about it. What a relief!

Alex arrived on time and helped me sort out my Quicken content in a way I can understand and use. I've had the program for a couple of years and didn't input the information properly. He untied the knot and was nice doing it.

Andy took care of EVERYTHING! He held my hand throughout the whole process and patiently teach me how everything comes together; domain setup, storefront, payment processing, order and shipping management, accounting ledger entries He was also willing to work within my tiny budget. Andy is knowledgeable in many areas of building a business. I would recommend him to anyone. Please don’t forget to visit Kettcouture.com for the lastest fashion.

After dealing with a bookkeeping nightmare for my business, I switched to Every Penny and I am so happy I found them. They are seriously on top of their game. They had my entire 2017 year cleaned up and accurate within a month or so, and charged a lower rate to bring everything up-to-date. Their monthly rate is a little competitive, and entirely worth it since we have such a big company. Thank you, Julie and Summer.

About

I'm forever passionate about numbers and tech! I am joyfully serving the accounting, bookkeeping, and technology needs of businesses and individuals in Southern California for 28 years! Having been gifted with a talent and passion for numbers, I want to give back! I want to be the first to raise my hand high to offer my accounting and business expertise. Over the past 35 years (I started my career when I was 2 years old - lol!) I have had the honor of working in a field that 'lights me up'. Even after all these years, I still consider a balanced bank statement or accounting report a cause for a celebration! Hard work and an acute understanding of business operations and the fortitude required for success is no stranger to me or my work ethics. My experience is diverse and spans an extremely wide variety of duties in fields from construction to medical, real estate, and manufacturing, to name just a few. I am always willing to pitch in to do whatever it takes to accomplish the task at hand and help in any way possible. Extra mile effort is one of my mottos, both personally and professionally. To me, accounting is far and above just working with numbers. In many ways, it is an endlessly fascinating, ever changing story displayed in specific categories. Using creative thought can enhance the complexion and texture of the story and shed light on areas of need or attention. Throughout my years of accounting work experience just about everything imaginable (and unimaginable) has crossed my desk in one form or another. I have been afforded opportunities to address and effectively handle and deal with far more than I could possibly present in a resume. I bring with me extensive experience, skills, and expertise, which will lend deeply to any accounting endeavor. Having worked with tremendous diversity will also be of great value as I have dealt with many of the challenges facing a variety of businesses first hand. Over the years, I have held a variety of accounting positions advancing from a clerk in the '80s, to controller, and most recently controller/CFO/CEO where I was privileged to serve an amazing spectrum of clientele. To say I am incredibly passionate about accounting and business would be an understatement. I have worked with various main frame applications and numerous accounting related programs; many of them since their infancy. I have led accounting teams, actively participated in a team, and have worked independently. I am reliable, energetic, trustworthy, and take immense pride in my work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

  • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
  • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
  • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
  • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.
