Jennifer H. says, "I was expecting to have to wait several hours to hear anything back from my initial inquiry to Thumbtack asking for yard help. Edwin from Tortuga Landscaping asked if he could come right over and see the job. It was clear to me in talking to Edwin that his company does a large variety of landscaping jobs; pavers, pruning, general landscaping as well as maintenance. He also has a full crew if you need them, or if the job is smaller as mine was, he can send exactly as many workers as you need. The job I had was a major yard clean up job. We set up the work for the very next day. I worked side by side with Edwin's brother for part of the day but he was extremely self sufficient, hard working and courteous. Not only that, but he was a super pleasant guy to work with. I look forward to hiring this company again! Thank you Noah and Edwin!"See more

Elena L. says, "Excellent Driveway Paver Project — Skilled, Patient, and Trustworthy Team I had a great experience working with Flavio and his team on my driveway paver project. My driveway is long, sloped, and not a simple project, with tree roots and structural considerations that required thoughtful planning and careful execution. From the beginning, Flavio took the time to explain the process, answer my many questions, and walk me through the key construction decisions. What I appreciated most was the combination of technical knowledge, patience, and professionalism. Flavio clearly understands paver construction, base preparation, edge restraints, drainage considerations, and how to build a driveway that not only looks beautiful but is built properly underneath. He and his team worked hard, stayed focused, and handled the project with care. The finished driveway looks excellent. The pavers are beautifully installed, the layout is clean, and the overall result has made a major improvement to the appearance of my home. I also appreciated that Flavio was willing to talk through details with me throughout the process and make sure I felt informed and comfortable. As a homeowner, that meant a lot. His crew was hardworking, respectful, and clearly experienced. They completed the work with pride and attention to detail. I learned a lot during the project, and I came away with a strong appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into a well-built paver driveway. I would highly recommend Flavio and his team to anyone considering a paver driveway or hardscape project. He is knowledgeable, responsive, patient, and committed to doing quality work."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Whether you rototill before laying sod depends on your preference, but your ground needs to be prepared for the sod to take root in the soil. A rototiller makes it easy to till up compacted earth so that new sod can easily take hold, but there are other methods you can do. Consult with a sodding professional to discuss which preparation steps should take place before laying sod.

Landscapers and sod installation specialists can lay sod. When choosing a professional to lay sod in your yard, read their ratings and reviews from customers. Also, search for photos that showcase actual work done by the pro. And always get cost estimates from several sodding professionals so you can get an idea of how much you should pay for their services.

Sod can be laid any time of the year, though the best time to do so is in the spring or early fall. During this time, temperatures are cooler but grass is still growing.

Summer isn’t ideal for laying sod (but still possible), as the high temperatures demand extra watering that can not only drive up your water bill. It can also make conditions ideal for mold and fungi.

There are differing opinions about this topic, which is why you should talk to a sodding professional near you to find out if it’s possible to lay sod over your particular lawn. In some cases, it might be possible. For example, some professionals say the new sod will kill the existing grass underneath and release nutrients that will benefit the new sod.

However, others believe the old grass will disrupt the sod's ability to take root in the soil, and it will die due to a lack of nutrients.

The national average cost to install sod is around $2,235 and prices typically range from $1,311-$3,808*, according to Thumbtack data. The type of sod you choose, your lawn size, and many other factors can impact how much you'll pay for sodding services.
