Wow is all I can say about my experience with Michael. I have been in customer service for years and this was what it is supposed to be like. Not only did he reply to my request within a few hours, it was also for a reasonable price and the service was fast and easy. Couldn't ask for more in a handyman, he is now my company's go to for repairs!

I needed new faucets and under sink plumbing changed in my bathroom and was told about the thumbtack app. I found the app so helpful and very excited that I found such an efficient and professional handyman as Bogdan! He responded right away and we set up a time for him come and evaluate the job for an estimate. I found the estimate to be very reasonable and when the job turned out to be more involved than anticipated, he never asked or expected a price adjustment. He did a great job and I've never had a handyman clean up as well as he did. I will be using him again for future jobs and would refer him to anyone!

We have a cottage to rent out that needed a bathroom remodel. Sam was very quick to respond to our request for quote. He came out and started work right away after the contract was accepted. Sam is not the cheapest contractor we've worked with, but he is very professional and doesn't waste time since he charges by the job. He gets the help he needs to get it done and is communicative throughout the project so that he could hit his target completion date. He shows up on time, which is not always the case when dealing with contractors. He encountered issues with how the plumbing was originally installed and instead of just leaving a potential problem, he quoted the fix separately. As work is completed, Sam gets the client to look at what is accomplished and makes sure it is accepted. I definitely would call Sam first with our next project.

Robert offered us the best quote for a toilet install and also offered to take away our old toilet at no extra charge. All the other plumbers that I called were quoting me between $155 - $375 for the exact same work that Robert did and none of them “offered to take away our old toilet”. When I asked if they could take it away, they quoted between $50-80 extra to take away the toilet. Glad I found Robert before scheduling with one of the other plumbers. We will definitely use Robert’s services again for any needed work at our home.

I was referred to Mark by one of my friends. He did an amazing job to wire and install an electric fixture in my backyard. He helped us on many projects including electric work, replacing my garage door unit and also once bailed us out when our Garage door came off its railings. He is our go to person for any repair needs. Mark is everything a handyman you are looking for. He understands the customers needs and goes about his job in a very professional manner. He is always willing to listen, answer your concerns and make you feel at ease. His pricing is very fair for the quality work he delivers.

I replaced my old shake roof with a composite roof. When I had the shake roof I had several leaks in the roof which damaged my ceiling dry wall at several upstairs locations. I contracted with Daryl's Handyman Service to repair the damaged drywall areas. Daryl completed the repairs with excellent workmanship. The most major repair was performed on the master bedroom bathroom ceiling. Daryl's work in the bathroom was exceptional as shown in the attached photos. Daryl not only repaired the drywall damage but he also painted the entire bathroom using his own initiative. Our bathroom looks great. My wife and I are very pleased. Daryl also performs fence repair work. We plan to contract with him in June or July to perform over 140 feet of fence repair. I highly recommend Daryl for any home repair needs.

I hired Kieth to stain my fence and he was spot on on all levels. Showed up on time, gave me a quote quickly and did a great job on a large project. I don't always go on price, but he was the more than fair and i would not hesitate on hiring him again for all handyman work, large or small. In fact, I will be reaching out to him again in the near future for other projects.

They were so completely wonderful and professional. They met me at IKEA to get my cumbersome bed. They assembled part of it at their location and then showed up the next day to put together the pre-assembled pieces. That made it really convenient for me in my small house and kept it quiet as well. They were so friendly, kept to their times we had established, and professional every step of the way. I look forward to using them for other building/handyman/etc tasks at both my home and my business. Highly recommended!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
