We asked Pedros Painting to paint cabinets in a rental kitchen. He removed the cabinets and sanded and painted them. Came out amazing. Before and After pics posted. We asked Pedros Painting to paint the outside of the front of the building. He and his crew did an excellent job in replacing rotted siding and painting. He painted the inside walls of the front unit of our duplex, which came out excellent. He performed a full paint of the entire rental unit in the back of our duplex and did a good job! He is responsive, on time and offers great value. We were very happy with all the work he did for us. The last picture is Adees with paint on his teeth, hair and face. He is not afraid of hard work. He also communicates with the customer along the way to make sure everything is what the customer wants. At the end of the job, he again calls the customer to check on the work and he does more touch up so that the customer is happy. Thank you Adees!

Sam and his team couldn't have been nicer people to work with. He showed up on time each day, cleaned up his work area, did an excellent job building my new fence and completed on time. I plan on using Sam again for other fencing needs.

The job: 1) Inspect entire home for dry rot; remove all that was identified, and install new lumber matching lumber. 2) Inspect all windows and doors; adjust if required, and caulk/seal around all. 3) Paint exterior house trim; around windows and doors. 4) Other numerous small tasks (e.g. install GFCI outlets, smoke detectors, CO detector, water heater earthquake straps, etc). Robert and his assistant did a fine job taking care of all the aforementioned tasks. I was very satisfied with the work performed. If you have home repair problems/projects involving wood, I suggest you consider having Robert evaluate your problem/project and give you a bid.

We hired Scott to replace sun-damaged dry-rotted fascia boards on the front of our two-story house in Folsom before repainting it. His guys did a great job peeling back the concrete roof tile, removing the damaged boards and replacing with new boards. Perfect execution. Not a single tile was broken. He also recommended using engineered wood which was a great suggestion to avoid cupping. I'm an architect and I work for a major general contractor, but I just didn't want to do the work myself. I had high expectations and Scott's company met and exceeded them. I would not hesitate to recommend Scott and S & W Construction for your carpentry needs.

Stephen came over shortly after I hired him, very friendly and knowledgeable. I had him build me 7 drawers that slide out with soft close. They were all dove tailed. He did such a marvelous job. I have hired him to build 12 sliding shelves. The price of the project is well worth it. I would recommend him to anyone. All the dove tails and quality of wood and hardware will last for years to come. Thank you Stephen

This project was to remove the cooktop and wall oven from our 30 year old house and install a range, refrigerator and range hood. This entailed reversing the fridge and range positions, building new custom cabinets, moving power, water connections, adding power for the range hood. It was difficult to find companies who would even propose for the job. Scott saw the full job more clearly than the other estimators and, amazingly, possessed all the skills to do the various tasks. His proposal was clear and explicit. He was competent, quick and thorough. He communicated well and was considerate of our time. The remodeled kitchen now gives us more food prep area and looks great. We have added drawers where we had false drawer fronts before. We found Scott through this site we'd never heard of before and are glad we did.

During my search for someone that could build me an aquarium stand for my 125 gallon saltwater tank, I came across RAM woodworks. When I spoke with Kevin he told me that they never built one before and would be very much interested in building one. A week or so later we had a meeting to go over plans and I was impressed with the research he did to make sure that the stand would fit my needs. We had a few hiccups along the way but Kevin did everything he could to make up for them. The end result was a beautiful stand that was delivered to my house. I would recommend RAM Woodworks to anyone looking for custom cabinet work.

We have contracted with Peter Hind on two occasions for work on our house. One was a complete remodel of a bathroom and the other was a re-build of a staircase going to a second story deck. The bath remodel (which included complete gutting of the room) was accomplished well within the time allotted and on budget. The job was done to perfection with Pete giving every aspect of it his personal attention. The second job involved the re-building of the staircase got complicated because we added one of those "by the way while you're at it" jobs to replace a large window in our hobby/game room. This turned out to be more work than any of us expected because of an enormous amount of dry rot repair. Pete took the whole thing in stride and completed both jobs in a professional and timely manner. The stairs definitely exceeded my expectations and the window replacement with all its added work turned out very well. Peter Hind is a professional who truly cares about the quality of his work and customer satisfaction. He relates well to the customer and stands behind his work 100%. We highly recommend Peter Hind as a General Contractor. Larry and Sharon Wusk

It gives me great pleasure to write this recommendation letter on behalf of Equinox. I own two rental properties in the cities of Napa and American Canyon. Last year, Equinox repaired my property in Napa. This job included the painting of the exterior of the building made of stucco and wood. Equinox performed exceptionally well and went above and beyond by making sure that work was completed to my satisfaction (on time and within budget). Additionally, Equinox worked diligently in repairing a wooden deck and an iron bridge that connects the deck to the patio. After the work was done, the house recovered its luster and beauty! Equinox painted the exterior of my second property in American Canyon. This building is made up mostly of stucco. They power washed the exteriors, replaced the wooden frames of front windows, performed detailed repairs around the walls where they found cracks and other minor things. I was very impressed with the final result. I was very satisfied with their performance. The house recovered its original beauty! Equinox's personnel is detailed oriented, dependable and trustworthy. They are my first choice whenever I need a job to be done right the first time. If you have questions or need to speak with me, please feel free to call me.

I hired Mr. Quinley to build a vertical stamped concrete wall with a redwood fence on top of it. My property backs up to a commercial property lot. Mr Quinley did an awesome job. In fact I've had an incredible number of compliments about it. He did such a great job, I hired him to put in two sliding glass doors & a set of French doors.

Ben is an exceptionally polite and fastidious worker. He's there when he says he will be there and ready to work. His work is very thorough and neat. I had him build a fence gate, fix my irrigation, some moulding work and mount something on my wall. His fees are very reasonable especially since he is so fast. He will work by the job but usually paying by the hour works out less expensively. I would definitely recommend him and I would hire him again.

Mr. Noble was prompt, polite and very capable. He did several tasks for me, including installing a security door, building & hanging shelves, installing bathroom vanity & hardware, and window repair. He also tinted the windows in my car. I have always been completely satisfied with his work. I will definitely use Mr. Noble's services again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
