Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

Brandon was very accommodating when I requested a change in date and time for our session. He and his wife put all of us at ease, including my 8 month old grandson during the photo shoot. Love the photographs and was able to get digital downloads of the photos I wanted as well as some printed photos.

I stumbled unto Claire by mistake, however I don't regret it because she is highly professional and kind. She knows her job, and she was very quick to provide suggestions that made the photo shoot awesome without being invasive. My photos came out beautiful and I would definitely book Claire for another photo shoot session. Oh! I forgot to mention she is highly affordable as well. Overall, it was an awesome experience, I will definitely do it again. Thanks Claire.

Claire is AWESOME! She took the time to talk to my daughter & her friend about their input with their senior photography. She never rushed anything, especially during the shoot. She was super patient & wasn't afraid to get down & dirty to capture all the right angles and poses. She some how made my daughter come out of her shell so she can be relaxed and comfortable versus posing still like a mannequin. It was overall a fun experience and Claire is really awesome with her professionalism and her work is excellent! Will consider Claire for future photography! 👍🏼😊 #ExtremelySatisfied

[Update] He corrected it and did another shoot which was very good. Would recommend! 👍 [Original] I had about 5 photos I wanted to emulate (They were difficult to emulate) and the ones I received looked nothing like them. I'm very disappointed and I feel like I wasted my money and I'm already on an extremely low budget so now I have to take the pictures by myself on my smartphone which sucks. I was very much looking forward to them and even tipped $20 as I thought the session was long and we had a variety of shots. Only ended up using 1 photos. If you couldn't already tell, I'm pretty disappointed and upset. I would only recommend if you want good quality basic photos with little to no editing.

Absolutely Beautiful Photographs! I needed to get my son’s senior portrait done & had less than a week to do it! We had already had his pictures done through the designated school photographer, but I was not happy with them. I wanted outdoors photos taken where my son looked comfortable and relaxed- not posed. I found Thumbtack while searching online for a local photographer and decided to try it—and I’m glad I did. I got several quotes & decided to try Shalon Bourdase at Collaborative Creations Photography because of the photos on her website. First let me say that by this time I had 4 days to get these photos submitted to the school for an award ceremony presentation AND I needed both digital & hard copies! I knew that was a tall order for anyone. But, from the moment I spoke to her, she made every step in process very easy for me. We scheduled the shoot for the next day, which was a Wednesday at a lovely little park on Alluvial & Clovis Ave. Check. She called & told me the proofs were available for viewing on her website that same night. Check. I had the most beautiful photos to choose from it made it difficult to choose just one for submission- so I chose several. On Thursday I let her know which ones I wanted. Check. I was supposed to submit photos to the school by 4pm on Friday so I was feeling a little stressed about the time crunch, but Shalon was on it. She met me with the photos on Friday morning, but I had forgotten to tell her that I had also needed digital copies-oops. So I showed her the one I was submitting and she emailed it to me within an hour or so. Check & check. Shalon was very professional, punctual & knowledgeable. She worked great with my son and made him feel very comfortable. If you want beautiful photos taken for a special occasion, then I recommend Shalon Bourdase. You won’t regret it! Cecelia M

If you are looking for amazing results please hire these lady's! There are literally no words to describe my session. After meeting with several photographers, they were the ONLY ones who had told me they have been in front of camera which I liked, besides the fact their portfolio is amazing! They are prompt with responses, super creative, and able to make you feel comfortable! They are able to give you ideas to prepare for the big day, especially if you are unsure of how to 'act' in front of the camera and even with what to wear if you don't want typical sexy bra. During my shoot I was able to laugh and be reminded when my expression wasn't exactly as sexy as I thought. They were able to work with, work around, and work through some of my insecurities. I can't recommend them enough! Sounds weird but the photos might just make you change the way you look at yourself like they have done for me! Worth every penny!
