Lois is a wonderful tutor. As soon as she heard me talking she knew exactly what was it that I needed to train my English in order to take it to the next level. Highly recommendable to those who have an advanced level of English, because she is really precise and you get to learn a lot of history on the language. It is very enjoyable and it makes sense. If you need ESL, she's the one! She is also a writer, producer and acting coach, therefore she's also super creative and helpful when it comes to having to work out some text.

Chris was very attentive and informative. He was able to edit and provide me with powerful reasons why I should reword various sentences. I would recommend him wholeheartedly. His work was on time, worth the cost, and his experience in writing is helpful in guiding and supporting anyone new or old in the process. I've known Skip for almost ten years and in that time working with him, collaborating with him, he is a plethora of knowledge. He knows the ins and outs, his reach is far and wide and knows many folks in the industry. He is always willing to help a fellow writer in any way, he seems selfless in his acts. He has done work for me and I can tell you that he is a professional who is down to earth, and down-right honest.

Mr. Morris-Lent helped me with my applications to get into NYU and The New School. I am pleased to say that with his help I got into both! He's a great writer and helps you put your thoughts onto paper. He has a pretty flexible schedule and makes time for you if you need it. All in all, he's a great tutor to hire. Thanks!

Cynthia is incredibly insightful, supportive and always professional. Throughout the time she coached me creatively she always stayed focused, reminding me every session what my goal is. She helped me take small steps every day to do the work spiritually, creatively and she also has an excellent grasp on the practical and the necessary small steps that make the big strides possible. When I'm not working with Cynthia I now have a structure and a routine to my day, and resources that she turned me onto to keep me going in the right direction. I referred another working writer to Cynthia and will continue to bring her clients because she has been an amazing resource and an invaluable inspiration to me.

Daniel has been terrific with my third grade son, who is a resistant writer. During their lessons, I've been watching my boy cross over from writing the bare minimum to discovering the joy of creative writing. Such a treat!

I have worked with Kandice for almost 12 years off and on and each time I look forward to the experience because I learn so much from her. Kandice is an excellent writer and editor, imaginative, creative, on point, is able to grasp even the most complicated narrative and massage it to be perfect. Her extremely wicked sense of humor is so refreshing. She can take the mundane and turn it into a brilliant work of character development and plot line mastery. As a public speaker, prepare to laugh and come away with much more knowledge than you went in there with. An actress, acting teacher, a powerful sense of character development that can bring out the best and worst in people. Dependable, creative, contributory, a leader, funny, team player, and a dear friend of the printed word.

When I first met Rachelle, I knew nothing about writing, but she made a published writer of me, helping me find my voice and teaching me the writing craft in a supportive, nurturing environment with constructive, positive feedback. Rachelle is an excellent teacher and her editing skills are unmatched.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
