Kevin was great. He was very responsive from the moment he replied to my request for mattress cleaning until the moment he arrived. My mattress is spotless and looks brand new. My husband is always concerned about workmen in the house when he’s not there (and we actually scheduled him for a morning when my husband could be home), but Kevin was very professional and an all around good guy. He also gave us a very reasonable quote to clean and polish the hardwood floors in our place. We will definitely use him again!

Martinez flooring did an excellent job installing engineered hardwood and mouldings throughout my home. Joel, answered all my questions and was extremely patient with my undecicivness on choosing a flooring. He came to my home to bring me samples on several occasions (even without knowing if I was going to hire them to do the job). Their prices are reasonable and they are very knowledgeable and professional. They even repaired a couple of items/furniture to prevent the floors from scratching and did additional adjustments without charging extra. Thank you Martinez Flooring!

Robin built us a door/wall between the bedroom and the bathroom. It took 3.5 days (including the necessary drying time). We were impressed by the quality of his framing. He had great judgement about where to place the door. He relocated the recessed lights in order to center them in the newly created hallway. Robin made sure that the molding, wall texture, door and door knobs would match our existing stuff. I cannot wait to hire Robin back to replace our carpets with hardwood flooring.

I would highly recommend Sos. We hired Sos after speaking with several different handymen. He refinished our hardwood floors, moved a bedroom door, removed some tile and completed a few other smaller jobs. He was professional and went above and beyond what we asked him to do. I was very pleased with the quality of his work.

Excel Construction worked at me house doing a big remodeling. I had to remodel 2 bathrooms &Kitchen. In addition to that, they installed new hardwood floor around the whole house. The new floor was an engineered floor. The bathrooms remodeling included everything from tiles, vanity, lights, shower and bath tub to paint and switches. The kitchen remodeling included all the new cabinets, island with counter top, new sink, appliances and counter top with back splash. The work was done by several teams of people that managed by the company and they did a great job! I had no issue with the people that worked at my house and more than that, I was in touch with only 1 person (Eyal). This company was very professional, reliable and honest with me and I will hire them in the future.

Joey was very understanding of the small job/low budget where other contractors were quoting 2-3x. He had one of his men, Milan, come and install cork underlay with click hardwood. Initially I was quoted $350, but it became $400 upon arrival - not a big deal, but something to consider if you’re shoestring and ran out of money on a build as I did. Milan did a pretty great job overall, very friendly and speedy. In this circumstance precision near the walls didn’t concern me as I built floor to ceiling acoustic panels, however I was a bit concerned about the lack of spacers and some not so “straight” cuts. Also, there was a misunderstanding regarding the threshold and the point the floor was to be brought up to. Luckily, after some schedule conflict, Joey was able to get him back out to correct the mistake. Overall the floor looks great, feel solid thus far, no bowing or splits, so I think it’ll hold up. The floor style itself looks spectacular. Overall I’d give them a B+

I am extremely pleased with BC&D's services! I hired Armand to refinish 100 years old hardwood floor and paint every wall and ceeling in my home. He is a true professional and did an amazing job with both the paint and the floors. He went above and beyond with professionalism and a smile. He completed the job in time (which is extremely rare for contractors and most vendors I've dealt with)! And offered the most competitive rate. I highly recommend him and his work.

Ernesto is the greatest! Reasonably priced, quick to respond, and very knowledgeable. He had great insight and educated me on the process of each step of the installation. He re-tiled my fireplace and it was perfect. I originally had an outdated red tile fireplace that I attempted cover up with chalkboard paint and my DIYing made it worst! I contacted Ernesto and he made himself available right away! He and his associate got to work and took the time to perfect all the intricate details and they were so precise. We will use this company again for our kitchen remodeling in the near future, and for all home and tiling projects from this point moving forward. This photo doesn’t do any justice! THANK YOU!

Matt Edwards considered the different solutions to a water damage issue on my hardwood floor. He was honest and very accommodating to my needs. He showed up on time and worked efficiently each day. He also gave me a great price for his work, and cleaned up the space very well before leaving. I now have a beautiful floor that looks brand new. I would highly recommend Matt for his knowledge, reliability, and professional work.

Too bad I can only pick three attributes to describe Gerardo and his team. Fantastic experience with a friendly and fast company. Gerardo was on time, thorough, and more than reasonable in his price. I would absolutely hire his company again, and encourage anyone reading to do the same because you will not be disappointed. Before and after photos attached (carpet to hardwood).

JL Flooring has been managing the original maple floors in my home almost since I bought it 25 years ago. From the original restoration work necessary when we first bought the house to ongoing maintenance through the years of kids and pets, they always leave me with beautiful floors. The team has also installed hardwood floors in a couple rooms in the addition and they match the original flooring perfectly. It is all too rare to find the quality, value and responsiveness of JL Custom Flooring in this day and age. I cannot recommend Joe and his team highly enough. Call them. You'll be very glad you did.

I have hired Ayal Bendayan at Home Designers & Contractors Inc. to renovate my house and the experience was a lot more pleasant than I had anticipated. I remodeled the Kitchen, Livingroom, and the backyard. The Balcony was about 500 sqf. that wasn’t utilized until Ayal built an amazing composite deck with built-in pot holders with benches in-between them that created a new leisure area for dinner, play room, and lounging. The Kitchen is maple with a lot of pullouts and a nice sized Island that was used as a table also. We installed an additional window for more light and a view to the deck. It seems like a simple task but Ayal had to install a steal wall that was quite sophisticated. The Living room had a bar, wine cooler, and shelving out of hardwood Maple. The Flooring Distressed Hardwood oak that gave it a very warm ambience. All together Ayal made his trips to the to get permits and finished the job on time with an amazing finish.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
