Working with Marissa (and Megan too, of course) was an excellent experience. Both of them are very intelligent and helpful in going through the college application process. They're also both relatable and friendly, unlike a number of tutors I've had in the past. I know they offer a variety of services, but I worked with Marissa and Megan primarily on college application essays. They know what colleges are looking for, so they helped me tailor my essays to fit the values and convictions of each institution I applied to. They also gave me a lot of tips for the writing process that I still use today. Just to make things clear... In no way did they write my essays for me. They really help by giving suggestions when it comes to the direction and message of the essays. Each essay I wrote began as my own product and ended as my own product--just more eloquent and finely tuned. Overall, my experience with Marissa and Megan was everything I (and especially my parents) hoped it would be. I definitely think that my one-on-one time spent working with them on my college essays really made a difference in the schools I was accepted to. I'd highly recommend them for anyone looking for help with college apps, tutoring, and much more.

I, as well as a number of my colleagues, have used Dina's outstanding writing capabilities numerous times. I knew her as a writer/editor with the Tolucan Times. First, she created a mid-career resume for me, using disparate experience, and helped me find a whole new career. She has also edited professional articles for me, which I subsequently published. She has an intuitive ability to flesh out and connect with what I am trying to accomplish, and truly writes with my voice.

Do you have that book in your head that you would like out? Do you or someone you love have a story to tell to the world? Call Virginia to type it up fast! She is excellent in typing and grammar skills.

As a holder of a Bachelors in English Literature with an emphasis in creative writing from CSU Channel Islands, I meet both ends of the writing spectrum, creatively, academically, and everywhere in-between. I have a strong grasp on this crazy language called English and the ever confusing thing we call grammar. In my free time you will often find me correcting spelling and grammar mistakes in books, the local newspaper, and blogs. When I'm not working on my own content, I am editing/writing small blurbs for local churches and small businesses. I appreciate good writing and do everything in my perfectionist power to bring the best content forward. I'm affordable. I work fast, efficiently, and provide beautifully written content coupled with razor sharp editing skills that will not disappoint. I check and double check my work to make sure that the content I'm providing is free from tacky spelling and grammar errors that do less than impress. My schedule is flexible and allows the time needed to get your project done on time and well.

With a professional background in human and social services for eighteen years, I was responsible for numerous grant writing projects. I discovered that I possess a natural proficiency for writing and editing corporate, trade and vocational documents. My occupational associates and I are bilingual (English/Spanish) and very adept at document writing and translation. Calimano and Associates turns cryptic industry documents into creative instruments of communication!

I achieve proven results based on my students' test scores in my last several years of teaching.

With more than 7 years of freelance writing experience behind me, I am passionate about delivering excellent content to each client. I strive to make web content, e-books and other materials much more than ordinary.

I have a natural gift in written and oral communication. I do not claim to be the best among others but clients can try my expertise and they can decide from thereon.

I am a writer myself, but I edit books / literary projects for new, aspiring writers and businesses. My latest project was Summoning the Darkness, by Christopher Scott. I only work with hard copy, and I don't travel. Having written eight full length novels and a two-book historical series that is published, I have twenty years experience as an editor. I have traveled extensively in Europe, so I particularly enjoy editing books, essays, and documentaries with those settings. I also love anything to do with nature. As I continue to get my work published, I will help you achieve your goals as a published writer.

I have had over a decade of experience working as a feature journalist, copywriter and editor. One of my favorite quotes by Mark Twain sums up the importance of choosing the "right" words. “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.” No matter what the project, whether it's merely a concept or a manuscript that needs editing, I am dedicated to make it shine

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
