We had Dave come over to fix a number of things in our old house. He arrived on time and was very friendly. He did a very nice job of replacing the threshold to our front door, and repairing our old garage door which was falling apart and sagging. He installed a new dishwasher, replaced the angle stop which was leaking, and installed a security light. His charges are very reasonable. On top of that he realigned our front door which was sticking and fixed our driveway gate without charging but we tipped him for that! We would definitely call him again for future work at the house.

Richard Wasso's company, Central Coast Paving, seal coated our residential asphalt driveway by carefully prepping the whole driveway area, taping off exposed siding and walkways, gently pushing overhanging plant runners out of the way. His charge for the job was very reasonable and we are delighted.

Overall very good experience, I'm very happy. David did what we requested in the beginning, and was very flexible to changes. The only caveat was that it took a little longer than we had expected. Especially the dumpster blocked our driveway for much longer than he told us. Given it was year end, I could understand.

If I had to do it all over again I would still hire Genesis. David and his crew did a nice job on my pavers and my new turf grass. I liked it so much I decided to extend the pavers into another area of my yard. His prices are fair and his quality of work is great.

AKP did an excellent job on my new landscaping project for my front yard and backyard! We also had them install a concrete deck with beautiful pavers for the backyard! They also redid our old fence that was 6 feet and replaced it with a beautiful 7foot high fence! Joseph and his workers did such an excellent job and were thorough, quick and very clean! Hiring them was the best decision we could have made!

We had Dario of Buzzy Bee work on our front yard landscaping and we are extremely pleased with his work. Landscaping included pavers, bluestone porch, bluestone path, grass, and plants/trees. His price was reasonable and he kept his promises including keeping close to his estimated timeline even tho we added a few things after we started. We love the quality of work and have already received many compliments from our neighbors. We wish we had used him on our backyard but had hired someone else who took a 6 week job and turned it into a 6 month job. In hindsight and after our experience with Dario, we wish we had turned to Thumbtack and Buzzy Bee for that project first! We would defend recommend Buzzy Bee for your landscaping needs.

Jessie is such pleasure to work with. Very reliable, responsive, thorough and on time. We wanted to widen our outdoor patio's floor and add a 18 ft by 6ft cement. I went on the website and saw Mcgraw construction through Thumbtack. Their site showed several pictures that is similar to what I wanted done on my Patio I message Jessie. He requested if he can come and see the proposed project, get the right measurement and check what materials/machine needed to complete the job. He came Thursday, checkout the patio, measured the area, did some computations, made few calls to get pricing for the materials/machine needed and within 20 minutes gave me a very reasonable quote on the spot. Since I want it done right away, he tried to work with my schedule and have my cement extension done the following Monday. I was at work when they came to my backyard, but Jessie and his co-worker, Lupe worked tirelessly to complete the job on time. Jessie took pictures of the step by step development of their work since I cannot see it. He sent pictures using his phone and text it to me while they are working on it, placing of the Rebar, the picture of the cement truck on my driveway and pouring on the cement, and when Lupe is trying to even out the cement. They came at 12:00NN and finished the job at 4:00PM. I was able to meet them at 3PM and saw Lupe and Jessie finishing it when a broom. They left the backyard spotless because they clean up all their mess including our mess. May patio looks fantastic, and my family are happy with the result. A job well done! Thank you Jessie and Lupe. Expect for more calls from us for future projects.

I am very glad that I chose Water Pivot for my backyard landscape and hardscape. First off, he introduced me to Ali Atar, who did a 3D design for my backyard so I could see everything before it was done. Ali did a fantastic job and was very accommodating to my changes and request. Then, Milad and his crew did an amazing job on my backyard installing pavers according to the design. They were here everyday early morning and work very hard the entire day. They also changed all my irrigation systems and made my backyard garden beautiful by adding flowers and plants. They did such a great job that I asked them to also fix my driveways that had so many crakes. They installed pavers and turned my driveway like a brand new house. Now, that all my backyard and driveway looks brand new, I had to do something with my porch. Milad suggested that I install tiles and he brought one of his best contractor, Farzin Golpod to install the tiles. Farzin, is very detail oriented and takes his time to do his job not just good but great. Maild is very honest guy and it was a pleasure working with him. I would recommend Water Pivot to all my friends and neighbors who need a good landscape/hardscape company.

Jeff and his crew were punctual, pleasant and listened to my concerns and wishes for our project. He was always available to me for any questions via phone, email or text. They cleaned up the job site and after all of that we have a beautiful new driveway and entryway. I would recommend Jeff, and have already, to any friends or anyone wanting concrete work done. Great job!

Mike gave a prompt estimate online, then arranged to vist the property and give a more precise one once he had seen and measured the site. He and his workers did three things: (1) he lifted up an uneven section of stone terrace, relaid the baserock, and reinstalled the stone pavers so they looked perfectly flat again; (2) they spread mulch in my woodland garden; and (3) they spread gravel on 1/3 of a mile of trails. Mike is polite and honest, and his workers were courteous and worked without my needing to supervise them much. They did make a few little mistakes (disturbing some drip irrigation stakes, covering some low growing plants with mulch), but these were relatively minor slip-ups that Mike endeavored to correct promptly once the issues were brought to his attention.

I have used Vander on 3 jobs, a new enlarged deiveway and hardened pad for my 45" Motor Coach, and expanded concrete patio and sidewalk and some landscaping work. Absolutely the highest quality of work. Work done in San Jose in Eastern foothills, done on time and perfect.

Our driveway was not only old, but had several severe cracks resulted from a huge pine tree. It desperately needed repaving. I looked up Yelp and found no feedback on Apex. Well, I decided to give them a try anyway. Reggie at Apex responded to my quote inquiry very timely over emails and came out for an inspection the following day, followed by a quote the same day Their quotation process was formal and organized. My driveway job was promptly scheduled once we have agreed on a price. Reggie brought with him a professional crew and small backhoe. They removed the old surface, chiseled out the old tree root, and totally prep the driveway during their first day. Second morning, Reggie showed up with a heavy duty paving machine and professionally finished my driveway within hours. Reggie was very attentive to details, checked with me on how I would like the driveway edge to my backyard to be finished, and put in a small indentation for water drainage at my request. He even patched up a small hole that was not within his original scope of work. When they finished the work, they left the street cleaner when when they came in, not leaving a single bit of asphalt on the road. Overall, it was a wonderful job completed by a truly professional team. Thank you.

Came out to give us our estimate, arrived on time and looked over our job. We just finished our very long driveway that had many cracks and repairs needed. They repaired and sealed it with 2 coats and everything looks wonderful. We didn't pay until the job was finished to our satisfaction. Also was told if we find anything that settled and needs a touch-up just give them a call.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
