Dave is more than outstanding. Not only is he professional, he can also think on this feet to resolve a very difficult door issues that we had for a long time. We live in a high end home and had 2 contractors work on the problem Each improved the situation slightly but the cause of the problem was never truly understood until Dave came along. One reputable door company even tried to sell me a new door. Initially, I was extremely wary of using someone from Thumbtack as there was no way to check credentials and bona fide references. Dave has certainly surprised us on the upside. He is cost conscious for his clients and does not recommend a more expensive solution if a cheaper one can be had. I watched Dave work the entire 2 hours he was here. He spent a great deal of time troubleshooting and then came up with a game plan that we both agreed would be ideal. He's a hard worker and an intelligent one at that. In the future, I will call on Dave to do maintenance work on our home without the slightest reservation. Ting P.

One of the first things Gleo told me was that he had a regular job and would be able to work on weekends. He did two jobs for me at a rental. One was installing a medicine cabinet and interior lock. He did not complete repair of drywall repair by the cabinet. The other job was installation of a security door. He installed the medicine cabinet, lock and security door in a good manner. He did not complete an addition to the bottom of the security door. He was pleasant, on time, cleaned up well, and cooperative but for the incomplete items. I wanted him to paint a bath in S.F. at another rental but, he did not give me an estimate (perhaps too far away). Manelis Properties

Mike A. came out and provided a quote for doing the work of putting in new sheetrock in my bathroom. The work was done at the agreed upon times. They were on time and they finished in the timeframe they said they would. The finished work was great and just what I asked for. He is easy to work with, respectable, and does a good job. He also has some good stories to share!

Tony was the first to respond to my inquiry about painting the outside of my cottage. He came over the next day to evaluate the job. We easily agreed on a price for the whole job, and came to an understanding that it needed to be completed in the next two weeks. Despite some rain, which complicated the schedule, Tony and his team arrived on time, powerwashed the house, went above and beyond and repaired some rotting areas, did an excellent painting job, cleaned up thoroughly and put everything back as requested. I will definately use Tony's Handyman Services again for this, and for other projects. My sense is Tony is quite competent and can do carpentry, stonework, floors, fenches, irrigation systems -- pretty much anything I might need. Thanks Tony!

H&P was fair enough to tell the job was too big for the size of his business, appreciated the fact that he didn't waste time or lie about that like other contractors who promised sending a quote which never happened.

Excellent work done on replacing waterlogged insulation and sheetrock & paint & texturing on the ceiling and wall of my bedroom. Friendly, professional, and efficient. Only reasons for 4 stars not 5 are: a broken recepticle faceplate not replaced, a couple of last minute plan changes, leaving us with no ceiling light for 3 days, and a little bit of paint residue on the carpet near the wall. Otherwise excellent work and great value.

Jose refinished a 30 year old engineered floor in our house. Based on this experience I consider him one of the five best contractors I know. After building a new house from scratch and remodelling an old one I know many contractors. First, the result is excellent. The floor looks almost like new. Second, the process: very clean, always on time as promised, easy to reach and to communicate with. Third, the price was good as well. I am planning to hire Jose when I have projects that fit his skills and highly reccomend him.

This is by far the best framing crew I have worked with on any of my projects. Not only did they follow the plans exactly, they treated my site with respect. They left it clean everyday and made accommodations for my clients living in the home. They will be my go-to crew for future projects. Joe Wetzel General Contractor

Trying to find a landscaping contractor on yelp, but all good ones were fully booked until a couple months later. So I turned to Thumbtack and eventually decided to hire Dario and his team. Dario is a honest person and his team is very professional. They did everything according to the plan and the quality of work is awesome. If I knew Dario earlier, I would definitely have him work on other part of my project as well. I would highly recommend Buzzy Bee Construction and would be happy to provide reference in the future.

We hired Defersol Building Contractor for a two week job to replace two large structural post, repair a deck (about 30 feet high), and replace a wall (wood and concrete). They secured the permits immediately and began and finished the project on time. David and his crew is easy going, flexible, and professional. And best of all, when they said they'd do something, they did it, and they did it well. I'd hire these guys in a second if I had more work to be done. Excellent team.

Jeanette was fantastic! She responded to my request right away and followed through with my alteration needs that same day. She even re-altered one of my hemmed curtain panels to ensure they were the perfect length. She was a pleasure to work with, and I would definitely call her again for any design and interior work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.
