Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

Here are some examples of floor installation costs, depending on the material:

Is it worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist?

Unless you have plenty of experience installing the type of floor you want, it is worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist.

The first reason is tools — pros have them, and they know how to use them. Without the proper experience, there is a high risk of injury with nail guns and power saws. A good pro also works quickly, saving you time that you could spend doing other things.

Finally, a pro gets you past options paralysis by helping you decide the best flooring for different rooms and areas of the home.

Highly recommend these guys! Ray has a really excellent, friendly team. They did great work removing our old carpet and installing a new floor with sound-proofing that Ray provided. The new floor came out beautifully! I'll definitely work with them again if I ever need flooring work in the future. 👍

Gerardo was a very soft spoken, humble person. I hired him to do the vinyl prank floor for an office space. This whole process was super fast and easy. He responded to my inquiry right away by text and call, came to look at the space the next morning with several floor samples. He sent me the quotes in the email, ordered the floor the next day and came to do the job the following day. He was punctual and completed the work within the morning. Other companies contacted me right away too but after I asked them to email me the estimates, they all disappeared. I’m so glad I finally found a reliable person. Definitely recommend to all of my friends and family!

I had Marco and his team install about 1,200 sqft of vinyl plank in my condo. The good: Marco was very nice, super helpful with my many questions along the way, and these guys work FAST! They moved furniture, demo'd the carpet, installed the underlayment and floor, and baseboards, all in one day. The bad: unfortunately, the speed came at the cost of quality and attention to detail...after they were finished, I noticed a bump in the floor in my closet so I asked Marco to have someone come back and take a look. The guy told me it was probably because of how the concrete floor below was level, but I asked him to take a look anyway. He removed several pieces of the floor and found that it wasn't because of the concrete but because there was a bent, rusty nail was in between the underlayment and the vinyl. These guys were going so fast that they laid the floor over trash and didn't even notice that it caused the floor to be uneven (see picture)! There were also several areas where the pieces did not click together nicely. Initially Marco claimed that these were manufacturing defects, but the guy who found the nail told me that they were moving so fast they didn't notice it. Marco also didn't supervise the project or stop by to review the finished job once his crew was done (though he did come the next day to collect the check!). Ultimately, I was pleased that the job was done quickly but I would have preferred it if they went a bit slower in order to make sure it was done right. I won't be using M&M again.

From beginning to end of the project I had nothing but a great experience. He came in person to give me a quote and once materials arrives we scheduled some dates in and he was on time when he said would be. The work lasted about two days and I can't express how excited I am that Jacob and his crew were able to install the flooring. I will use him for my next project if I end up doing my 2nd floor and will definitely recommend him for my brother's future project.

There were some hiccups at the beginning, so the project took longer to finish. However, Robert did a good job on our guest room's laminate flooring. He is friendly, too. I will hire him again if I have a project near Downey.

Marco and his crew did a spectacular job. Why is he so great? He was prompt when I asked for an estimate, he was fair with his price, he was extremely accommodating by locating me a certain floor I was looking for, he is responsive, kind and honest. He was the best value and quality as I had other estimates. Please look no further , he is fantastic and has a professional and courteous crew. They do top notch quality work! Our 50 year old home with old Berber carpet has a fresh look and the new floors are a real gem. He hauled away the old carpet and cleaned up everything before he left. I could go on and on about what a great job and experience it was to work with him.

Had a great experience with M&M Flooring. Actually contacted Marco Jr back in March for a quote to swap out carpeting on three flights of stairs to laminate hardwood. I would procure they material myself so that it matched existing flooring in the house, and M&M would provide the install labor. This was for a rental property and I missed the window that tenants would be out of town in the spring (due to pandemic), so the next window I had was in August. I contacted Marco again and he not only remembered the project but honored the quote. Everything went smoothly with install, from blocking out preferred install dates to showing up on time to completing the work ahead of schedule. His father Marco Sr was onsite and a delight to work with and made sure that everything was cleaned up afterwards. Marco Jr followed up by phone to confirm that all went well with install. Would definitely use them again and recommend to friends.

The one star review is primarily for my experience dealing with the lead of the group, Brandon, and not with the other guys, who are all part of the same family. When I initially posted my project, I got several offers and Brandon's was by far the highest of all. After several days he followed up asking if I can give him a fair offer. For my 120 sq ft kitchen floor, we settled on a $900 install, including all labor, but not material. I trusted other positive reviews here and that turned out to be a mistake, so I don't want others to go through the same experience. The installation was on the Saturday before Christmas and was supposed to take "a day and a half". In the meantime, I asked him if he'd be willing to make an extra buck by delivering the tiles from a local warehouse, which he declined. On the install day, the crew showed up on time and began working promptly. No issues there until Brandon said that they'll actually squeeze it all in one day. I wasn't too happy about that unplanned change as I had concerns that the cement wouldn't dry out soon enough to allow to walk on it, let alone to carry the heavy appliances. He also said that they live in Fontana, which is about 50 miles away from my home. That alone was the red flag, which he didn't share before either. There were four guys working on the floor from 8 am 'til 6 pm, minus a two hour lunch break. That equates to 32 men hours, which is an overkill and they were stumbling over each other in my tight space. His crew was very hard working, but they were not efficient and there were moments when I was worried that they'll break my glass balcony door, after knocking out its screen door. The crew first removed the old, vinyl floor and the side trim, as agreed. The floor was visibly leveled and smooth, there were no uneven surfaces, nor did Brandon forewarned me once that there'd be issues later on. However, as they were slowly getting done with laying the tiles, it became apparent that the long hours started wearing them out and it showed. First, I warned Brandon that a couple of tiles that he had just laid were not leveled, so much so that I could see it from a five feet distance. It was right in front of his face and he thought that he'd get away with it because the stove would be sitting on top of it. Then I brought up the same issue with other tiles, pointing out how uneven they are and Brandon's excuse was that "there are bubbles on the floor". Really? I had the old vinyl floor for years and never saw or felt any "bubbles". He refused to redo the few tiles and I'm upset for letting him leave it like that because the height difference is high enough that it catches your shoes as you're walking over them. Just as they rushed to wrap it up for the day, I reminded them that returning the appliances was part of the deal. They did carry the stove and the fridge, instead of dragging it, but the weight of four guys along with the weight of the appliances was too much and too soon, a few tiles right in the high traffic area became loose, just a couple of hours after they left my place. I immediately texted Brandon saying that there's an issue and that the grout started crumbling because the tiles are moving. Not only that I can see them move, but by now I can even hear them, that's how bad it is. We agreed that they'd come back right after Christmas, as he offers "a lifetime warranty". And that's when the whole experience went sour. In the week after Christmas, I began texting him to have some of his guys come out on Dec. 28th. Brandon ignored my texts sent on three different days (I still have them all and happy to share its screenshots). Then I called him and he promised to get back to me to get me know if Sat. Dec. 28th is confirmed". No word, no call, no text. In the meantime, I came down with a fever and texted him one more time to postpone it as I didn't want to make his guys sick. All of a sudden, Brandon responded, first and only time after my numerous attempts. That Saturday was not confirmed for his crew to come out anyways, so NO he didn't plan to have them at my place. A few days later, I reached out to Brandon again, wishing him a Happy New year and asking whether on the following Saturday his guys can finally come out. And, again, Brandon went silent. Then I called him as I noticed that he just doesn't care to respond to my texts. While he did answer, all he was giving were bunch of excuses, no specific date or time and we wrapped up the call with his word that he will call me on that same day by 5 pm. Knowing how flaky he is, I texted back the details of our last call. And sure enough, Brandon did not stick to his word again. There was no call on that day, next, the day after .... Four days later, and after I lost all my patience with his unprofessional attitude, I texted him that I found another vendor who will come out to fix his work. And that's where the cherry on the top came, Brandon's response was that he did confirm for the next Saturday (which is a lie), called me right away (no point of talking to him anymore), and that he "finds it very disrespectful", that I'm willing to pay someone else and not them. Seriously? After countless texts and calls to come to fix his work, he finds it suddenly disrespectful that I decided to take the matter in my own hands? How dare I, a cash paying customer, have anyone else touch his master piece. And speaking of, I spent $2,000 on this project ($900 for labor), for a small kitchen and entrance and I still have to have someone else fix it. In addition, he bought double the material that was needed and left it on my balcony. What am I supposed to do with 50+ lbs cement bags? His excuse was that his crew can use it for another project in my place. Well, is that how you secure your future jobs, by bringing too much material at customer's expense and then wink that you'd be more than happy to do it too, now that I'm stuck with the material. Good try, but I will definitely not let Brandon come even close to my place again. Too bad, because it all started well, but once they got paid and went home all that was left was a ton of dust and a fake promise of a repair. Oh and massive spots in my parking spot from Brandon truck's oil leak. No, I definitely would not recommend these guys. P.S. Just to show what you can expect from the Lopez Group, here is Brandon's response to my honest review, which I can back up with other screenshots of the install issues, as well as of all the communication (or rather, lack of in Brandon's case).
