Joel S. says, "For all issues related to mold, mushrooms, water intrusion and more, these guys, Jaime and Antonio and their crew, are extraordinary. Initially we had a mold and Poria Mushroom problem in our Laundry Room. Poria Mushrooms are extremely destructive to the wood frames of houses. It is very difficult and time consuming to find their source and get rid of them. Very, very few companies know how to deal with Poria Mushroom issues or want to be bothered with taking the extensive time necessary to do so. Jaime and Antonio, who kind of have the mindset of detectives or scientists, tracked the Poria to the yard next door, and removed every trace of it leading from underground in that yard all the way through multiple planters and under concrete stairs into the laundry room, and then remediated for the Poria as well as the regular mold inside the walls, rebuilt a portion of the foundation that had to be removed in order to remediate properly, and sealed the entire exterior side wall and entryway to prevent any further water intrusion that might lead to a recurrence of the problem. Then several months later, in an entirely different part of our house, we discovered more Poria mushrooms and serious water intrusion into a downstairs closet. They both tracked the source of the Poria and remediated for it and regular mold once again, and sealed the entire front wall of our house, meticulously discovering every nook and cranny for possible future water intrusion along the way. American Heritage is one of the few companies that deals with both mold remediation AND the water intrusion issues that might cause mold or other related water problems. They are a full service operation in this regard. Recently we had them back out after an unusually strong and driving rain caused some water intrusion around our old, wooden, antique windows. These windows can't be insulated from rain in the usual way cause then they wouldn't close. But they came up with an ingenious solution using a newer technique that allowed them to seal from OUTSIDE the windows rather than AROUND the window, which points out another one of their strengths -- they are always on top of the newest technology and materials. And while they were here, they re-tested their prior sealing work and touched it all up under warranty. Antonio and Jaime are just extremely knowledgeable and experienced with all this kind of stuff. They are reliable, thorough, friendly, smart perfectionists and just basically good guys. We couldn't be happier with their work and we will always use them for all water intrusion, flooding and mold related issues."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to repair a deck?

The average cost to repair a deck is $2,075, but keep in mind the prices professionals in your area charge could differ. For example, prices often depend on the material (cedar, composite, PVC, pressure-treated, hardwood deck materials, etc.) that is used. The extent of damage also affects the price, with severe mildew damage requiring pressure washing and restaining. Other factors include the need for site grading or elevation, stair or railing repair, and termite damage repair or replacement.

Always get cost estimates from several deck repair services to find out exactly how much your repairs should cost.

Should I repair or replace my deck?

The signs that your deck needs repair may include warped or soft decking boards, wobbly or loose railings, or rot. However, it’s worth considering your deck’s age before deciding between repair and replacement. Decks older than 10 years are candidates for replacement, particularly if they’re made of wood instead of composite or PVC. If the foundation is affected, or if the deck seems to have an overall need for extensive repair rather than just an isolated area, consider replacing it.

Of course, you can always consult with deck professionals if you need help determining if you should repair or replace your deck. Ask to receive cost estimates for both the needed repairs and replacement before making a decision.

What is the life expectancy of a wood deck?

A wood deck is likely to last between 10 and 15 years. However, some decking companies say a wooden deck’s lifespan may last several decades. This life expectancy assumes that there will be regular maintenance and sealing. It also assumes that the deck has been built with high-quality and appropriate woods, such as cedar, pressure-treated or rugged hardwoods. Proper design and drainage combined with regular cleaning and maintenance can make a deck last longer.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.
