Mr. Witmer is an excellent instructor. I have been his student for almost 2 years now. He challenges me to learn at a pace that I can appreciate and I see improvement in my playing with every lesson. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to improve their musical skills.

My violin classes with Mathew are pure joy. He’s super friendly with a great sense of humor and provides focused, structured classes and clear guidance. I started violin classes as an adult with no music background and found Matthew to be a caring and patient teacher offering all the encouragement I needed. Later in my training when I decided to purchase my own violin, Mathew was extremely helpful in guiding my selection of an appropriate instrument. We tested multiple (okay, dozens) violin and bow combinations and I got to better appreciate the skill and nuance he brings to his craft. Mathew is an accomplished professional musician who I have heard play (beautifully) in concert solos. He knows and loves the viola and violin and clearly has a deep appreciation for music. I highly recommend him as a teacher.

Matthew is able to do in-home lessons, which for me right now is very helpful. Although I was going to take violin lessons I decided to switch to viola, and Matthew is a wonderful, wonderful viola teacher (as he surely must be for violin too, given his expertise and patience). He is clearly a masterful teacher, as working with adult students presents a whole other range of challenges to an instructor. I've had only two lessons so far and have already made clear progress in the areas I wanted most to improve, and look forward to working with Matthew going forward. My lessons are inspiring with this clearly highly experienced player and performer; they are also fun. Matthew's a warm-hearted and engaging teacher with whom I KNOW I'll continue to make progress. Though I'm an older adult, I am inspired to push through my limits. With so much to learn I'm very grateful to have a teacher with expertise, humor and flexibilty. Thank you for reading this.

My child is happy, so I'm happy. She's very picky with tutors, and teachers. He is by the book traditional teacher, and she is getting asking well with him, so I am definitely satisfied. In addition to that, Matthew is also courteous, accomodating; initiates and maintains communication. I can't say enough good things, except in addition, he exudes the key traits, any parent, or anyone looks for in a tutor.

Complete beginner must learn to read notes and play them on the instrument. They must also learn key signatures to begin working on easy pieces.
