Don helped me with a kitchen remodel, he replaced my cabinets, linoleum, and installed granite counter tops. He did a beautiful job. He took his time and helped me pick out my materials, provided me a lot of options. He was patient and came back quite a few times to help me get plans settled. I would definitely hire him on again to help with future projects.

I hired Don for 2 small jobs-a repair on the wood piece (astragal) between the two doors of my double front door, and a small wall and tile repair from water damage in my bathroom. Despite my explanation of the job and pictures I put on Thumbtack, the door job was not what he expected. Rather than decline or renegotiate the job, or analyze what was actually needed, he did an inadequate and sloppy partial repair which left me with a door that does not properly close and cannot now be easily repaired. The bathroom job was better, but the wall was left smooth and not textured to match the rest of the wall. I was asked to buy supplies before Don knew what he needed and left to return what wasn't needed myself. He arrived with no basic materials (such as wood putty, grout) and used whatever I had on hand even if it wasn't the right material for the job.

We started and "signed" the contract early January for a job that was to be done within a time frame of 7-10days. I had to take a week off to wait for my floor tiles and while waiting, they were working on another job for somebody else, so that meant the schedule worked out for both parties. However, as days passed, I had several requests for some days that the worker can't go to work. There were Several days that we had somebody working on our bathroom until 9.30 even 11pm. Don got upset at me for not agreeing to add $200 for installing shower subway tiles because I had sent the original pictures and actual tile sizes. He said subway tiles are tiny (my designer had to chuckle because tiny tiles are penny tiles, not common 3x6 subway shower tiles). In the end, I ended up agreeing to meet him halfway and added $100 for subway tile installation. For the shower walls, they used the purple backed gypsum and they did not waterproof the board! For something that had to be used in the shower, (I was told by several people and some internet forums) this was not how it was supposed to be done. Don assured me he has been doing this for a long time and they never had a problem. I disagreed with him but being that the tiles are up and this is a guest bathroom, I just used epoxy grout so the water does not seep inside those gypsum boards and crumble. The project had been dragging out for far too long and we are already more than a month into it, I paid the whole contracted amount and relied on the honesty system that they would be back to finish putting the toilet, cleaning the tub, fixing the electricals, etc. After 2 weeks without any commitment on finishing the project, I am terminating our contract, with them fully paid. Don did not inspect the job at the end and was only present one for ocular inspection, second for buying the stuff during the first day and third a few weeks after he was hospitalized (for diagnosis). During all those times I understood and Gave advance payments (even if the contract stated to pay only deposit and last payment when done) so he can use it for his medical expenses. I also thought he was licensed but i guess i forgot to ask him for the number and he told me he was upfront about not being licensed when we first met (I probably forgot). In summary January to march and I still had to get someone else to finish the project. I opted to pay the whole balance because frankly, I was tired of how this project had been stretching out too long. I figure I would rather pay someone else to finish the project instead of waiting for them to commit to finish it.
