Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a cheap DJ?

To find a cheap or affordable DJ for your party or wedding, search for local DJs near you and ask for free cost estimates from several of them. While some DJ profiles may provide an automatically generated starting cost, it’s important to contact the DJ to get an idea of how much your particular request will cost. This also gives you the opportunity to ask them other important questions and make sure you are a good fit.

How do you book a DJ for a party?

To book a party DJ, start by comparing local pros in your area. Check out their ratings and reviews to find out:

  • Are they professional?
  • Do they show up on time to set up for the party?
  • Do they know how to feel the energy in the room and adjust the music accordingly?
  • Are they friendly to guests and take song requests?
  • Do they specialize in the genres you want (pop, Top 40, hip-hop, etc.)?
  • Do they have experience playing at your type of event (weddings, birthday parties, etc.)?

Whenever possible, watch videos of their performances.

Your last step is to contact three to five different DJs near you to ask them questions and get price quotes.

How much is a DJ?

When you hire a local DJ, expect to pay roughly between $300 and $800. But be aware that the actual price will vary based on several factors, including the length of the DJ’s set and how much of a presence they need to be. Larger venues can drive up the cost, as this requires more equipment, soundchecking and setup. Adding extras like confetti, fog, light shows and black lights also adds to the cost.

How much are wedding DJs?

Hiring a DJ typically costs anywhere from $300 to $1,200. It all depends on how long they’ll be working at your wedding and other various factors. The cost to hire a wedding DJ is usually higher than the cost to hire a DJ to play at a birthday party or similar event.

Why do DJs ask how many guests are at the wedding?

It’s helpful to let your DJ know how many guests will be attending the wedding so they can ensure they have the right sound system and equipment. They may also ask more questions about your guests so they can ensure they have music that caters to the crowd.

What questions should you ask wedding DJs?

To ensure you hire the best DJ for your wedding, ask these questions:

  • Are you available on my wedding date?
  • How much do you charge, and how do you set your prices?
  • What’s included in your rate (e.g., set up, clean up, etc.)?
  • How many weddings have you played at?
  • Do you have any references I can contact?
  • What kind of music do you specialize in?
  • Do you provide your own equipment, sound system, speakers, etc.?
  • Do you provide any other services (e.g., photo booth, lighting, etc.)?
  • Can guests request songs?
  • Will you accept a “Do Not Play” list?
  • How early would you arrive at the venue to set up?
  • Do you take breaks throughout the event? If so, how many and for how long?

Choosing Or as the DJ and emcee for our wedding reception was one of the best decisions we made and I feel so lucky that he was available on our big day. We had planned a reception that was a complex one to DJ/emcee for a number of reasons: 1) diverse crowd in terms of cultural background with a number of non-English speakers; 2) large age gap in audience from age 2 to age 98(!); 3) three live music performances with different styles sprinkled over the course of a 6 hour reception. DJ Or impressed me on our first call with his professionalism and easy-going but meticulous approach. I knew from the first conversation that he was someone I could trust to not only do the job but to take ownership for doing it exceptionally well. He exceeded my very high expectations in every way and I could not have asked for anyone better--I'd recommend him without hesitation to all my friends and any nervous brides. Prior to the event, he did a detailed walkthrough of the timeline with us, confirmed our musical preferences, and made some invaluable and insightful suggestions on the flow of the event and the time to allot to each segment--we updated our timeline as a result because we trusted his instincts on reading the crowd at wedding receptions. Day of, he arrived early to set up and did a superb job as a DJ and emcee--striking the perfect balance of adapting to the crowd and honoring the couple's music preferences. He made sure that the music was always appropriate for the mood and the activity and ensured smooth transitions between diverse segments of activities. For the dance portion, he motivated people of all ages onto the floor, even people who were not planning to dance. His emcee style was also spot on for what we wanted--just at the right time and just the right number of words. Anyone can put together a static playlist but only a good DJ can adjust to the mood of the crowd, the varying time needed for each activity segment during a reception, and unexpected day-of changes (no matter how well you plan, there will be surprises). DJ Or was masterful at this--we were late in starting, had a performer who was running a bit behind and a number of segments that ran over/under timewise. But he and the day of coordinator helped to propose updates to the timeline--it all worked out perfectly and the crowd had no idea that we moved the order of things around to make the evening flow better. As additional context, originally I was planning to DIY to be frugal and just use a playlist but as the day approached, it quickly became apparent that a professional DJ/emcee was the way to go--sharing some of those considerations below for those who on the fence about whether they need a professional DJ: - with all that you're already spending on a wedding, having good music that is seamlessly integrated into the various activities can take an event from average to unforgettable--I realized that it would be penny wise and pound foolish for us not to have a professional DJ handle this aspect of the event - a skilled DJ like DJ Or can serve as emcee also, removing a painpoint of needing the DJ to have to communicate with emcee throughout night on announcements. It also means one less vendor for you to have to hire or communicate with which is a big plus - less stress--in the weeks leading up to the reception, do you really want to spend hours downloading songs to make up 6 hours of time as opposed to sharing your preferences with a professional DJ who not only takes those preferences into account but also supplements them with his/her own music for each segment of the evening and adapts on the fly as needed? I could not be happier with our choice of DJ Or as our DJ and emcee. He elevated our event from a smorgasbord of random musical segments to a seamless and beautifully unforgettable celebration.
