Jose and his crew removed/replaced my driveway, as well as my front walkway. Also added additional walkways in the back yard. In all that they did, they were professional and diligent. Jose consulted me when necessary, but in general he had absorbed everything I wanted in the initial discussion. I couldn't be happier with their work. A truly professional operation.

When Brad came out to work on my trailer, he was on time and professional. He ended up needing to do more manual labor than originally estimated, but he did it well and the job was completed as promised. He cleaned up the driveway where he worked afterwards, too. I will definitely hire him again and tell others about his reputable and reliable workmanship.

Habran and his company did an amazing job repaving our long & wide driveway. He went above and beyond to do repairs that the previous company we used did not do. He added a product to assist in helping with the break down of our driveway. Our driveway was literally falling apart at a very fast rate and now it looks so good. I would recommend his company to anyone- Habran was very professional, explained in detail what he was going to provide us and did just that. We are so pleased with his services and will be using him again as well as recommend him to other

I hired Ramon and his crew to take down a leaning retaining wall and put up a new one. It was about 50 feet long and needed to be about 4 feet high. Also, they were building stairs into the hill. Also we asked him to widen our driveway by about 2 feet. All of this took them less that 7 days and came out perfectly. They even built in another step going up to the wall without asking me (we had discussed options of what I could do on my own). It was a great surprise. Very professional, very courteous and amazingly quick. Will use Ramon for and landscaping needs in the future.

I had some dead spots in my grass due to old sprinkler system not working properly. Russell replaced them with a new pressurized rotor sprinkler system. The first picture was taken just 2 weeks after installation! Some months ago, Russell also installed the EZ-FLO Main-Line Dispensing System and replaced the sprinklers in my ice plant. I included some before and after pictures to show the results. Russell and his crew are very knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. I highly recommend them!

I needed someone to come trim 2 extremely tall (over 25 ft.) out-of-control palm trees. Enrique came to the house the same day I contacted him. From the first handshake, I knew he was an extremely honest, knowledgeable guy who really cares about plants and trees. His price quote was very reasonable and he left the area cleaner than when he and his assistant began the job. Not only that, but I hired his wife to clean my house and she is fantastic! Enrique was back at my house yesterday afternoon to discuss another landscaping project, putting down new gravel on the parkway adjoining my driveway and really delineating the space, and again, he just took a look at the space after measuring and was able to give me a very decent quote for the work involved. I have full trust in this honest, very professional guy with a great work ethic. I would recommend him to anyone without hesitation.

Moved into a new house with construction debris left in the city-provided trash cans. They were full of mixed items - conduit, drywall, etc. that couldn't all be landfilled. Travis was very timely and communicative and provided great service.

Greg was going to replace the treads and risers on my front stairs (wood). Instead he created a masterpiece. Despite running into several problems with rotten stringers and termite damage, Greg still remained close to the estimated time they would take to repair. I cannot say I was not forewarned about unseen issues. The impressive thing is Greg does not just tell you about them, he shows them to you, and gives you the pros and cons of fixing the problems or leaving them alone. He and I went to the lumber store where he showed me various types of wood we could use and explained the differences between them. That way I could make an informed decision, choose according to my budget, and see exactly where my money was being spent and the amount I was spending. I had always wanted natural, unpainted wood stairs, and that is what I got. A lovely golden cedar oil base stain and sealer with non-skid additive and I have the nicest stairs in the park. Greg also leveled them (they were not level when I hired him), removed the ugly metal runners from the treads and sides, and ensured that everything was within code. I cannot stress enough how friendly, knowledgable and professional he is. His rates are more than reasonable, he is a pleasure to work with, and I would encourage you to give him a call for your next project. Greg is also replacing some flex pipe for me to bring my copper pipes up to code. A man of many talents, I am more than happy to recommend him to friends, neighbors, family and Thumbtack users.

I had Tersus remove and replace a driveway for me that was cracked and in poor condition. The Tersus team came out to my home within one day of speaking to them. They were on time, they reviewed my concerns with me, provided me with professional advise on the best way to replace my driveway. They sent me a written proposal the same day. The crews did a fantastic job, they finished the job quickly, and left it neat and clean during the work and after. I would certainly use them again in the future.

Shawn Keller and Pacific Pavers & Walls LLC were professional from day 1 for my 107ft x 3 ft retaining wall construction. Shawn came out to inspect the site and provide recommendations after understanding what I had envisioned. He offered a very reasonable estimated for the work and stayed on budget. Shawn and his crew also executed the building of the retaining wall flawlessly. The retaining wall looks great and was completed within 4 days even with rain delays. I will definitely want your help on follow-on work for patio, driveway, etc. Thanks for the excellent work Pacific Pavers & Walls LLC

I highly recommend Mike for professional concrete work performed on time and per his estimate with no "hidden costs".

We needed a drain at the end of the drive way to stop water from flooding in to our garage because our driveway slopes down to the house. There was also some stucco and wall damage that needed to be taken care of. We also needed a random window taken out and wood siding to be put up. AML Leon Construction did a wonderful job. All the employees were very nice and professional. Like all construction work on older houses once construction starts you usually run in to a situation of needing more work done then anticipated. But Leon Construction made us feel conformable and explained the reason for whatever else needed to be done they gave us other options for the extra fixes but in the long run we wanted to do things the best way. We trust the work that Leon Construction did on the house and we will certainly use them again for the rest of the work that we need to get done, we definitely would recommend Leon Construction to anyone who needs work done on there house. Thanks Leon Construction you guys are awesome.

Best choice we could have made, Chad was amazing from start to finish. My husband and I needed a new drive way and had several bids, they all were within the same range, but after meeting with Chad the deal was sealed ( no pun intended ) he was honest and up front about everything no hidden costs, with American Asphalt and Concrete you know what you are getting. These guys do an amazing job, and go above and beyond, they were on time and professional. Its nice to know there are still companies out there that deliver what they say they are going to do.Our new driveway is Beautiful we could not be happier. Thank you Chad and American Asphalt for doing what you do. Mary and Ken C.

After about 10 years of no maintenance to our house, we finally decided to get our house roof pressure washed. Years of dirt and grind had built up on our roof and made it look pretty shabby. We ended up using Dirt Fighter, since they were recommended to us by our friends who had their driveways cleaned by them. Igor and his crew did a great job and everybody was very courteous. I couldn't believe how much of a difference the pressure washer would make. Our roof tiles went from brown to the beautiful reddish tone, which it originally had. Since we have a cat that goes on the roof a lot, I was glad to hear that they use Eco-friendly cleaning products. If you are looking for a pressure cleaning company in San Diego County, I would recommend Dirt Fighter anytime. Great job, thanks guys.

Gotham Greens are VERY professional, all contracts any changes were documented. They poured a concrete patio with a paver look and put stones in between just like the pictures I showed them, they also extended the driveway all the concrete work was very well done. They also built a beautiful redwood deck and matching planter boxes, planted sod and repaired/replace sprinklers in that area. There was a miscommunication at one point which would have cost more but he said if it was a miscommunication there will be no extra charge. They always asked if there was any question at all, always let me know when they were coming (or not). Waiting for a quote on some more work from them.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
    • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
    • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
    • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
    • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
    • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

    What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
