About
I've had literally decades of experience working with writers of all ages, genders, cultures: you name it. For the last seven years, I've worked with many writers who need help with short projects like CVs or cover letters, with marketing collateral, with FaceBook ads. I've written copy for websites, long and short. I understand the modern attention span, and I can write or edit for that. I particularly enjoy book projects and particularly those in the early, planning and drafting stages. I'm an excellent co-pilot, a cheerleader when necessary, a coach, as well as an editor. I like collaborating with others. I can help writers at whatever stage, however, by providing the appropriate editing for that moment: developmental editing, line editing, copy editing and eventually proofreading. I also have assembled a team for those projects, so I can serve as content manager and refer book designers and more specialized editors (index, footnotes, bibliographies, etc.) when and if needed. Check above for photographs of the wide variety of works I've edited, some with participation from my team as well. I was a teacher for many years and sitting beside someone (literally or not) and helping them sharpen something they've written, or writing something for someone that expresses what they could not have said themselves gives me joy. With Talking Family History, my interview guide product, I enjoy providing something that is a service to my clients—something that makes them grateful and helps connect them with their loved ones. Language is communication, and communication is connection. I love being in that work.

Jim understood my brief exactly and delivered precisely what I'd asked for, on time and on budget. His enthusiasm for writing shone through all our communications. It was a pleasure to work with him and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to others.

I have been writing for many years and have worked with Jim on a number of projects. I continue to be amazed at how quickly he is able to flush out the most important aspects of the writing so that the message is clear, concise and impactful. His explanations for his rationale for editing changes provide assistance in improving my skills. As an added benefit, he is personable and witty, which helps lighten the burden and tedium of the revision and editing process. Jim is an integral member of the team of freelancers with whom I work. He provides a unique and invaluable perspective and his skills and temperament meshes well with those of other team members. I am appreciative of his assistance and have no hesitation recommending Jim.

Jim did developmental editing for our book, “Way of Zing”, continuing into line editing and copy editing as the project went forward. He did a final pass just before we went to press. We spent many hours in conversation about the work along the way. We believe he played a huge role in making us take pause, really think about our work, and produce a far superior manuscript. We did not always listen, but his critical eye and his experience were invaluable. Hell, Bill and I don’t even listen to each other a lot of the time. But I am proud of our, and I mean, our work. This was a team effort. I would hand it to anyone and feel very proud. Thank you, Jim. Mark Gregory Nelson-- Founder, Author & CZO

As a first time author, I must say, that being guided by Jim Baldwin was one of the best decisions I made in self-publishing. He helped me clarify my story in ways I had little if any experience. He asked great questions so as to clearly understand the topics of my writing. He provided positive feedback encouraging me that my story was meaningful. Without changing any thought, feeling or intention he was able to help me convey my point more clearly and with better impact. I learned a great deal by working with Jim about the impact sentence structure had on content and how less words were often more powerful and direct. He was also calm, caring and showed great interest in my story as well as being open to working collaborative with the other members on my team. I am eager to work with him on future books.

Thanks, Karen. Yours is a very important book that I know will bring hope to families with children on the autism spectrum. I'm honored to have been part of the process and happy to have been able to connect you with our wonderful graphic designer! Yay, team! Best of luck!

Working with Jim was a blessing and a delight. He took my rather dense wording on a new page I had written for my business website and very quickly whittled it down to its essence in a way that would have readers wanting to learn more. He is impeccable with his word—he does what he says he's going to do on time and within the agreed-upon budget. And he’s an incredible editor. I loved almost every one of his suggested edits and incorporated them throughout my site. I've used him twice now as my business grows and I want to continually make my website as inviting as possible. I believe one of the reasons my business has grown to be so successful over the last two years has to do with the way Jim helped me frame my coaching services to let people know what I do while encouraging them to contact me for more information. Thank you, Jim, for your responsiveness, your intuitive and extremely helpful insights into what can be lost in words but gained in persuasive strength, and your kindness as a collaborator. I look forward to working with you again soon." - Anastasia Frank, Relationship Coach, owner of www.AnastasiaFrank.com
