Subcooling replaced a broken furnace in a difficult-to-access place. They arrived on time, removed the old furnace, installed the new one, reset a complicated thermostat, cleaned up after themselves, and did it in a very courteous and friendly manner. Thanks!

I put out a bid for service on a Sunday evening because our home A/C stopped working and was only blowing warm air. I listed my specifics on "Thumbtack" and put the bid for service out. Within about 3 mins., Adam replied back with a quick yet detailed idea of what he thought might be the problem with my unit. He gave a bid and stated his intentions. I needed him to be out first thing in the morning due to work in the afternoon and he showed up at 7:30 a.m. on the dot as I requested. Adam was polite and genuine. He immediately went to assess the situation with the A/C unit and allowed me to stand by and watch all his actions. He diagnosed the problem immediately and showed me what had failed in the unit (I am semi-technical and he still was very remedial and explanatory with his assessments). He removed the damaged capacitors and had the necessary replacement parts in his van and fixed the entire problem in under half an hour (exactly as he had described to me he thought might be wrong in his initial bid response)! He even made sure to get out his tools and gauges to make sure all of the refrigerant fluids were where they needed to be and he did not charge me a single penny above his initial bid! Highly happy with his work, demeanor, and attitude which was one of caring and genuine concern to just get the unit back on-line and cooling the house once again as soon as possible for me and my family! Highly recommend to any/all potential customers going forward as I already explained to Adam he was now on my A-List as an exclusive vendor for my A/C going forward! Thanks Adam for being an honest, hard-working businessman who truly gets it!

I have been a super satisfied customer of Desert Tech and Miguel since the early 1980s. I have a set of circumstances different from many of Miguel's Palm Springs area customers. I live in the Los Angeles area, a far cry from Cathedral City. My most recent success story related to Desert Tech was the installation of an Ecobee3 thermostat on my HVAC (Dream System) Miguel and his crew installed in 2008. I was all prepared to install a Nest thermostat (purchased the Nest last December thru But, alas, I had never made the time to install it. The Nest sat, unopened, ready to be installed for almost 8 months. I called Miguel to see if he had a job going in the Los Angeles area and if I could "piggy back" on that job while he had a crew in the area, and have the crew install it for me. Miguel told me he had a major job going in the dessert and would be booked for at least three weeks. But the best part of the story is that Miguel told me about the Ecobee3 thermostat. He advised me to see if I could return the Nest. Fortunately, because the Nest box was NEVER opened, the vendor gracefully allowed me to return it with no restocking fee (kudos to a great company). Miguel told me to order the Ecobee3 and two additional sensors. He then offered to walk me thru the installation and setup of the Ecobee3 via telephone! When the Ecobee3 arrived at my house, I called Miguel. As promised, he guided me through the entire process without a hitch. I was really glad I spoke with him because several of the settings he told me to input into the Ecobee3 were beyond my understanding of HVAC systems. Here is the most amazing part, Miguel refused to bill me for his services! He said that after so many years of being a customer of his, it was the least he could do. It is true, I am a good customer. I had Miguel install a 2-1/2 ton rooftop HVAC unit on my first house in the 80s. He put in the "dream system" in my current house in 2008, which included a "CleanEffects" electronic air filtration system (solved a major allergy problem suffered by both my wife and daughter). In 2011, Miguel solved a problem I had been plagued with for several years with a room that had lots of electronics and computer servers in it. He set me up with a Fujitsu split-air system just for that room (man cave). It was the PERFECT solution. Miguel and Dessert Tech have earned my full trust and complete loyalty! One last example of his dedication to great customer service is when my HVAC system would not run. Because I have some knowledge of electrical systems (I am not a HVAC guy), Miguel and I worked together on the phone and determined what component had failed. Miguel had the part drop shipped to me and I installed it with the help of his phone guidance. I was only down for one day because he had the part "Next Day" delivered to me. Amazing! A last note, you can see my Yelp and other reviews and you will see I usually rate either 5 star or 1 star. This is because I don't take the time to write reviews for mediocre companies or mediocre service--I'll leave that to others. If you want a fantastic system installed by an extremely competent company and owner, look no further than Miguel and Dessert Tech. They have consistently survived the test of time. They have earned my business and my respect. They are truly great! I wish I could rate them twenty stars!

Today, we would consider a truly wonderful day. We met Mr. Mel Damron on a referral service called "Thumbtack". Our air conditioning unit was causing problems by not turning itself off, which as a result caused extremely high electricity bills. Mr. Damron answered our e-mail and also called. He was very kind. We set up a time and date for him to come and take a look at the A/C unit. He had already made a diagnosis of the problem just from our description. He arrived at the designated time and got right to work. He definitely knows his subject matter. He replaced a contactor, which was a new word for us. He explained everything to us. He also checked out the heating unit and sure enough there was a problem, which we figured it needed help, too. We were very impressed with Mr. Damron and would definitely recommend him to everyone. He is kind, thoughtful, intelligent and his prices are very reasonable. Mr. and Mrs. George Foster

"Trustworthy & Honest" should be added above to 'what we liked about working with Summit'. Summit, and Bobby in particular, 'owns' the job. Met when Summit installed replacement A/C in newly purchased home. Bobby walked us through various options citing features, efficiencies based on size, pros & cons of various products that would suit our needs. No hard sell, just valuable advice. Couple years later we wanted to relocate A/C unit to another area on patio. Called on Bobby to consult, guide re feasibility, associated costs. Then he & Summit made it happen - quickly. Highly recommend this hands-on, knowledgeable company. A/C & furnaces are a large investment for future ... to maximize investment requires in-depth professional consultation-in advance, plus specialists to install and perform regularly scheduled maintenance.

Fantastic company!! Fast service!! We bought a house over 1 1/2 yrs ago, didn't know what kind of condition the unit was in. The unit needed cleaning, not deep cleaning like a different company suggest. Serviced the unit and ac works great. Once winter came, this company came out and with in less than 1 day had the heater working great!! Smaller companies rock way better than big companies!!!!

Very happy with Mike's work. Due to improper installation of some of my outlets and a broken ground wire this was not a simple problem to diagnose. He solved the mystery and fixed the problem. He had to go get parts in the rainstorm. He was pleasant throughout the whole process. I will be hiring him again. GREAT SERVICE!!!

Scott actually installed 4 chandeliers in my house, and I have a few more that will eventually need installing. He was quick, professional and polite. I was very happy with his work. The chandeliers look great, and they were installed in plenty of time. I am referring him to a few other people who need an electrician.

Brockton Air Systems

Had a failure in our home A/C unit and at this time of year here in Palm Springs you can't wait. Had not used Brockton before but had a friend who had a good experience with them so I gave them a call. Got a quick call back and discussed the problem and had a good feeling after the discuss with Steve who was able to schedule an appointment same day. I thought I had a good sense of how HVAC systems worked but learned a few things from Steve who was able to quickly diagnose and get cool air flowing pretty quickly. I had imagined an expensive repair bill but was really super pleased with the total cost for parts and labor. I had gotten a couple of other estimates before selecting Brockton and their minimum charge would have been about what the total cost ended up being. Left me some $$ for a margarita or two. I would highly recommend Brockton for repair work and they also do new installs and ongoing maintenance (which I decided to schedule annually with them to avoid any surprises next year).

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

    • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
      • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
    • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
    • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
    • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
