Cathy K. says, "I can't say enough good things about Alex and his team at Santabay. I hired Alex to paint the exterior of my home. Knowing we would find some neglected maintenance there was more damage than we originally thought. Alex was completely transparent when any work needed to be added to the original scope. He left it up to me how to proceed and I gladly had them fix all the damaged wood, dry rot etc. I'm so pleased with the end result not only does it look amazing it feels like a solid new home again. Making this a stress-free project from beginning to end it was a pleasure working with Alex and his team. I will definitely be hiring Santabay in the future. Thanks again Alex !! Cathy"See more

Itai Zalcman says, "The planning and design process with Ben and the Waves Remodeling team was one of the strongest parts of the project. From the start, there was a clear effort to truly understand how we live and how the space needed to function, not just how it should look. Ideas were thoughtfully developed, refined, and translated into practical, buildable plans. Design decisions were guided by experience, budget awareness, and long-term value, which made the entire process feel grounded and intentional. Communication was clear, and every option was explained with pros, cons, and implications. Nothing felt rushed or pushed. By the time construction began, the vision was fully aligned, which avoided surprises and unnecessary changes. The result reflects careful planning, smart design choices, and a level of foresight that made the entire project smoother and more successful."See more

Kristian M. says, "I was remote and needed someone quickly to make some alterations to prepare for a new refrigerator install–move an outlet and narrow the opening in the cabinetry. Mario responded first. Stars looked good enough. Trusting thumbtack. My friend acted as proxy over phone and facetime. There was a small language barrier to work through. Spanish is not my first language. The quote for the work was offered and a price was negotiated. His resources seem to be limited to Ace hardware. I was hoping to have stainless steel installed as moulding, but he could only find wood. The work looks pretty good on my end. I think Mario is professional, responsive and punctual."See more

Natalie T. says, "I had a kitchen update in progress when, due to the workman's illness, it came to a halt. Holidays getting close! A lot of money already spent. Who do I hire now? A friend recommended Thumbtack. I reached out to 3 or 4 companies on Thumbtack. Big Sur responded quickly, spoke to me by phone and then came to look at the job. Within a week, Pasqual and his team began the work on my unfinished kitchen and dining area. Before starting the job, I knew his exact costs and length of time. I know that working with an unfinished product is not as easy as building from scratch. Pasqual and his team definitely know what they are doing. They completed the job on time, as estimated. Crown moulding, baseboards, window casement, finish, trim, paint. Their workmanship, eye for detail, professionalism and honesty are top notch. Pasqual bought material needed, gave me the receipts, did not tack on extra fees. My family and I are so very happy with the results! I highly recommend Pasqual and his company, Big Sur. I will definitely hire them for future projects."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.
