David is fantastic; he is definitely going to be our go to guy for any handy services around the house from now on. We asked David for a couple of things that involved going down into our crawl space. He’s fixed our dryer exhaust, fixed plumbing leaks and installed a gas line. If I could give David 10 stars I would. He is says he will do the job and will work on it till the job is done. We couldn’t be happier finding a guy like him. I highly recommend using him for all your handyman needs.

Simply put, Jose was wonderful to work with! I came home to work to find the unpleasant surprise of a badly leaking water heater. After a little research I turned it off and determined that after its 18 year life, it needed to be replaced. After putting up my request on Thumbtack, Jose was very quick to respond and gave me some great options on how to proceed. Not only did he pick up a new water heater for me on the way, but he stopped at TWO different Home Depots to find the best one in my price range. Not to mention, this was done relatively late in the evening. His flexibility was great. Once he arrived he was very thorough and professional. He quickly installed the water heater and made sure that everything was working as designed. He even followed up the next morning to see if there was anything else that was needed. A+ overall, and I will definitely be using Jose again if something should arise with my plumbing elsewhere.

Ronnie was great!!! I needed to replace our gas water heater. I called him in the morning after another company flaked. He was here within a few hours of our call and installed a new unit in less than 2 hours. He was kind, professional, and quoted me a competitive price. I will call him again if I have any plumbing issues.

Ricardo has been great! First he installed our gas dryer. Arrived on time, finished his works quickly and handed over the receipt of materials he picked up at Home Depot. The following week he built a platform in our garage and finished the job quicker than expected. Again clearly detailing his material purchases. Highly recommended!

BJ was professional as well as quick... my water heater was fixed within a few hours of first contact. He replaced the thermal coupler and I paid hundreds of dollars less some of the other quotes for the same part. Thank you, BJ for getting our hot water running again. It's nice to take a hot shower! I would definitely use him for other projects in the future.

Dinh installed a new water heater for my house as my old one broke down after over 15 years' usage. Before the work, we discussed it by phone. Dinh asked me to take pictures of the old water heater and its installation so that he could give accurate estimate on how much it would cost. This was very helpful for me to decide whether to go with Dinh. Dinh also checked that I turned off the gas value so that it wouldn't cause any hazard. Dinh came one day earlier to remove the old heater to save time for the next visit when he installed the water heater as he could check which additional pipes or parts that he would need. The installation was very smooth and Dinh also walked me through the pilot lighting process and followed up the next few days to ensure that the water heater worked well with no issue. Overall, I felt very comfortable working with Dinh and trusted his workmanship.

Scot came for the job on time, he worked with the owner to get the job done. The gutters has not been clears for a long time, and took Scot 3 hours. He spent another hour tried to clear the drain but need to come back for it. He only charged me for gutters job, not the drains. Scot did a fine job, even help me relit the water heater pilot light. I recommend Scot.

Gerardo rescued us to have hot water in a timely fashion, was great to work with and did an excellent job. He took care of our broken water heater and made the new one look as if it always belonged there. He also made a faucet run again while he was there. Only regret that asked him about doing another job and he did not follow up on discussing or making that happen.

Great customer service and Josh, the plumber who came to replace the water heater, was professional, knowledgeable, clearly explained what he was doing, and patiently answered all of my questions, while working from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on a Sunday!Just wish I'd called Mr. Rooter when I first started having trouble with the heater. Stan, the owner of the company, also stopped by to double-check some questions so I'm impressed by this company.

We had a problem with our water heater. He quickly responded and was at our house within 15 min (he happened to be in the area). It was a quick fix (thankfully) and he didn't even charge us for the visit! I will be calling him for any future problems. Highly recommend him. He even had the parts and an extra water heater in his truck to resolve any issues on the spot!

The most professional and knowledgeable plumber I’ve ever hired! Dom came over to install a simple water heater, what happened next was out of the playbooks. The pipes burst, the tubing was incorrect, and Dom handled it like a true pro and stayed here for hours on a Saturday. One of the most amazing human beings I’ve met in a very long time, if you need to hire a true professional that you could trust.Dom is the man for you! Also, he went above and beyond with fixing little repairs that he was witnessing as he was doing his job. A true professional from top to bottom.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
