I've been taking guitar lessons with Kimberly since the beginning of 2011. At the time I'd had several years of lessons using a traditional method on acoustic guitar and was looking for a teacher who could help me focus on electric blues rock and move me beyond my intermediate skill level. Kimberly has a real focus on and talent for teaching. My lessons are tailored to meet my interests. A large part of the lesson is devoted to learning her method for blues soloing--at least 5 approaches to improvisation and comping. After several years, I've come to see how these approaches interweave, complement each other and have become an intuitive part of my musical vocabulary. Also, because I expressed an interest, part of the lesson involves sight reading, learning blues and jazz theory, developing rhythmic playing sense, and learning a few favorite solos. Kimberly has an amazing ability to tab out and teach any song you give her. Which leads to the best part--after 6 months I was invited to play with one of her ensemble classes. While I was absolutely petrified with fear at the beginning, this has turned into one of the highlights of my week every week. It is just downright fun! It's a safe and forgiving environment where you can make mistakes and learn, or try things out that might flop, or turn into something cool. Every teacher and guitar magazine article all point to the need to play with other musicians to develop your skills and this is where Kimberly Allison really delivers. I feel that I could now sit in with other musicians and contribute. I give my highest recommendation for taking lessons with Kimberly.

I hired Eddie to work with my High School Son to assist him with the Jazz Band. Eddie was extremely helpful, patient and adjusted his schedule for my busy teen. I would highly recommend Eddie to someone looking for an excellent tutor!

Love love love the class and jazz that Tyler brought to our wedding! Never would I have thought Tyler’s touch at the wedding would make such a big difference. We received (and still are) so many compliments and comments about how cool and awesome that was. We had a Chinese & American wedding at a winery & both loved it and were taking videos of him all night. It truly would not have been the same without Tyler there. When I communicated with him when I was planning my wedding, you can tell how much thought he puts into his gigs. He played all the songs we requested and set the scene I wanted. He even communicated with my DJ to make sure all the equipment was compatible. Thank you so much Tyler! Best money spent.

Chris us helping to sing and play songs. I wasn't sure I would be able to find anyone who knows a lot of country and blues but Chris knows lots of my favorite songs like pride and joy, midnight rider, and others. He's for a great set of helpful exercises to get me where I need to be.

I have had the pleasure of working with Skip Johnson on numerous high level corporate events, private events and VIP weddings over the last 16 years. Skip is a consummate professional - onstage and off. He is an extremely talented musician, and whether he's performing solo or with his band (who are also amazing musicians!), has always exceeded my client's expectations. Skip routinely goes above and beyond to make each event a huge success. Once my clients have worked with him, they request him again and again. Skip is that rare combination of talented artist and astute businessman, who understands the importance of the details and treats every event, big or small, as if it's the most important one he's ever done. I absolutely love working with him and would highly recommend him!

My son started formal drum lessons with Steve two and a half years ago. Steve set the bar on professionalism, flexibility, communication, and has the patience to teach music to younger kids. My son went from a kid banging on a toy drum, to a musician that could play drum set rhythms in an elementary school jazz band. We've had other instructors since Steve left the Los Alamitos area but none of them compared to his high level of attributes listed earlier.

This group is AMAZING!!!! I booked them for my mother's 65th birthday celebration and the whole crowd loved them! Truly exceptional and superior service from beginning to end. Rodrigo was extremely helpful and polite, from obtaining details for cost--(which by the way, was sooo reasonable, given the fact that their performance is of high caliber!), to figuring what type of performance would be most fitting for the event. And Jacqueline Valderrama--- My goodness!!! What a supreme, beautiful, and most heartfelt voice!!! Although I requested mostly bolero/mariachi type of music, I'm pleased to know that they play all kinds of musical styles from latin band, Cuban, Andean, upbeat, even church music for weddings, etc.. pretty much anything you need, i'm sure they can try to work with it. They are definitely the Go-to band for ALL of your musical needs. I will tell everyone about them and will book them again if I have another event to coordinate. Anyone looking for a fabulous musical group?? I know EXACTLY who to recommend and you won't regret it! EL MEJOR GRUPO PARA TODAS OCASIONES!! NO SE ARREPENTIRA!!!! http://rorodriguez.com/home

Chase has taught my high school son electric guitar for 2 years. Apart from being extremely knowledgable about music, Chase is also an excellent educator -- something that I have found to be a rare quality in guitar teachers. On top of that, Chase really cares about his students -- both in terms of musical progress and general well-being. He is genuinely committed to his students. His broad smile when his students perform says it all!

I'm really glad I booked Yechan! Very easy to work with and nice. He sings beautifully. It's like a mix of an angelic tone with soul/blues. Highly recommend booking him if you're looking for someone who is more soulful than hypeman.

Mischief made my event. We had a dance floor and the band kept it full all evening long. They had great groove, had varied song list. Marlena not only has great voice - truly star quality - but was amazingly varied in style for music she sang and she certainly kept the guys attention. If she wasn't so nice I would hate her :-) the lead guitar player clear knows his craft - his solos were crazy good and fantastic job singing. Harmony amount the members was impressive often in 4 parts! They showed up on time, were professional, interacted very well with my friends, and put on an amazing show in addition to the amazing sound. I would definitely hire them again!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
