Introduction: When working with small business owners, nonprofits, or writing business proposals or grants, it is thinking outside the box, attention to detail and years of experience working in the corporate and nonprofit sectors. I take a stance from the executive perspective and develop concepts and models that work for proposals. I am also a small business owner, so I know the ins and outs and what it takes to get the job done or the project funded. What I like most about being an entrepreneur is the freedom to be creative. To use past experience and expertise to benefit someone else who is just starting out or has reached a plateau in their business or nonprofit and seeking to expand and grow and build capacity.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I was born an artist and a writer. From my earliest memory, and the stories from my parents and siblings, I was born with a crayon in my hand and with that crayon I drew and wrote poetry. The day after I graduated from high school, before going to university, my older brother, an accountant at our local bank, told me I was working with him for the summer. I found I had a natural affinity for numbers and later for management and business. I opened my first business at 16 and it continues today.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Beware of anyone who says they can guarantee results of they are talking about pitching a funding proposal or grant application. The final decision is not with the consultant but by a committee or board of directors.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

It helps when a customer has prior knowledge or experience in the field, project or program for which I am consulting. Oftentimes inexperienced customers become impatient when they do not understand the process, for example of registering a new company and then the additional process for obtaining tax exempt status of a nonprofit.
