For the second or third time, I put too much down the disposal and it clogged. I unscrewed the pipes as best I could but still didn't work. Tom came and within 15 minutes had it fixed perfectly! Thanks Tom for saying that clogs happen no matter what I do or don't do... Made me feel better! Will use tom again.

My wife and I started to hear rodents in our attic so we went on yelp and saw HALO Home Services with good reviews and called em up. They came out and showed me that rats have been living up in the attic for years by showing me the droppings, burrowing and entry points the rats were coming in from. Because they have been living in the attic for so long, their urine had contaminated most of the insulation. We do not want to be breathing in rat poop or smell urine so we decided to get new insulation done by them as well after they sealed all the holes and found no activity after 2 straight weeks. The attic looks and smells so much better. Needless to say my wife and I are sleeping better knowing our home is rodent free. Oh and I also asked for the termite treatment too, because we had termites. We got a good deal because we got insulation, termite work, and rat. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Steven did a great job. Our AC unit started forming a lot of condensation that it started forming a puddle of water in our garage. Turns out one of the pipes was totally plugged up. Steven came the very next morning and was able to identify the problem and fix it the same day. We're now able to turn on the AC unit with no problems. I would highly recommend Steven. Responds quickly, fixes the issue and is very reasonable and honest

Jose and his crew are very professional and experienced. He was very responsive and receptive throughout the entire process. He even suggested custom features to improve the patio's appeal and followed through with them, at no additional cost. During demolition, it was discovered that a water pipe had a small leak, which he was able to repair quickly and maintain the original project timeline. I will definitely recommend Jose to friends.

I called Bob to get a quote for water heater pipe leak. After describing the problem, Bob gave me an quick estimate. He came out within couple hours later to fix the leak. While performing the repair, Bob called to let me know it would be an additional $30 to replace the shut off valve. The cost of the entire repair was exactly what he had quoted me. I was very happy with the service and repair. I would highly recommend Muller Plumbing Services.

Water leak in front yard. Miguel came by and checked it out and found it not to be sprinkler leak but a main water pipe. He called to inform me and gave me a fair estimate and even suggested I get other quotes. He did the repairs with a co-worker who was also good. They had to remove part of my cement walkway since the pipe was underneath. He let me know that before re-cementing the area dry. Miguel was very personable and explained more than others would have. My neighbor grabbed on to him for handyman work and she was very pleased.

My irrigation pipes burst and caused water to drain from underneath my driveway next to my lawn. Mateo Pedro (MP) was quick to respond when I posted the job and he met with me the same day at 5pm. He dug up part of the lawn and provided a preliminary assessment on his own time. MP was kind, courteous, and professional. He quoted me a flat price that was very fair considering the work that had to be done without knowing the entirety of the problem. He took the time to evaluate my irrigation system and provided tips on improving lawn maintenance. I contracted with MP and he showed up a 7am the next morning and fixed the problem that day and after completing the repair he did a great job of cleaning up. I would definitely recommend MP if I have any additional handyman work in the future. Great Job Mateo!

We had a plumbing leak requiring a major reroute of piping through the hallway, bathroom and kitchen of our home. Lots of isolated drywall patches requiring a close match of adjacent texture. Jason and his team did a great job making it look like the holes were never there. We had a very minor issue with painting at the end but Jason came right back out to fix it the next day. We would use SoCal Drywall again.

I could not give a higher rating for Abe. This is an extraordinarily kind, honest, hardworking, and likeable guy. He does great work for a good price. He communicated through every step of the process and the end product was wonderful. He did a bunch of misc things for us, including drywall, insulation, and duct work. He is very talented and knows his way around most every trade. Best of all, you can't help but feel comfortable to have him around your home. He is just a great guy and a reliable, affordable option when you don't want to do the work yourself. I'll be hiring him again, that is for sure.

Russ is such a pleasure to work with. He spent the entire day working on our sprinkler system, fixing broken pipes and broken sprinkler heads, and making sure the entire system was properly working before he left today. I really appreciate the fact that he stayed until the work was completed. I will be hiring Russ to do other projects again, and I would highly recommend him.

Luke converted a bathtub to a walk-in shower. This included retiling and plumbing. Since the property was older, a number of unexpected difficulties came up. Luke approached each of these with considerable thought and skill. He consulted with me on each problem and proposed a solution. When all the work was completed, we had a great shower. Luke was always pleasant, very hard working and trustworthy. He will do a great job for you.

The attic insulation replacement job went mostly well with very little problems. My only issue was that they started a bit later than I would have liked & the job went a bit longer than I think they expected. Other than that, I was very satisfied with the price we paid. I will definitely consider hiring them again to finish another part of the house.

We had a fairly severe and undesirable situation with our kitchen sink, plumbing issues, pipe leakage, rust, mold, broken sink seals etc. Bill came to assess the damage, was professional, honest, knowledgeable and was ready to expedite the repairs ASAP! Upon prompt schedule he replaced and repaired the kitchen sink, pipes, garbage disposal and surrounding surface areas. The communication he upheld, workmanship and credibility to stand by his work on a secondary repair is outstanding. I will definitely use him again!

"We hired Ali for multiple plumbing jobs that included the kitchen and bathroom. We had leaks in both, and a pipe had cracked underneath the crawlspace and was spraying water all over. Also, we had to redesign some stairs going into the sun room. We liked how Ali would listen to us very carefully about our problem, and would keep us informed of all the steps he would take. He did a great job with our piping issues and the stairs ended up looking very good." Thank you,

Sean was my my rep. He was great. I ask a lot of questions and am fairly particular about projects; he was responsive and professional. My attic was a terrible mess with debris from a previous roof job. They cleaned it out, sealed up the cracks and holes, replaced the venting and ducts, and insulated with blown in R30. The work was done quickly and efficiently. I’d recommend them to anyone looking for attic insulation.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
