Introduction: Hi ChessCoachFlyn here... NOTE: I have added 2 client reviews below that could not be formally added to Thumbtack. They are two of my best recommendations. My program is extensive and aimed at kids with a strong interest in chess, especially those who want to compete or become stronger players. My program is as strategic as the game itself. The description below is the standard. However the program is always tuned to the needs of the student. THE PROGRAM (I do not teach remotely as it’s not nearly as effective) --The lessons are 90 minutes as I have found this the most productive for producing results. (Don’t worry, your child will be fully engaged the whole time. The exception is very young kids who may not be able to go this long, in which case I stop at 60 minutes.) --Every lesson includes homework (learning comes from doing, not telling). --I use a “discovery learning method” (maximizes “understanding” by the student). --I focus on the subjects that will have the most impact based on current skill levels. (For kids this includes Board Vision, Tactics, Endgames, and Using Chess Principles to play) --I monitor their homework efforts and what they are doing. I often send notes with suggestions of things they/you can do to help them with their efforts. I will even occasionally call and chat with them between lessons.) --And I get results, or I’ll tell you to fire me! Please read on, but I suggest you call me and set up a test lesson. This is the only way we will know if this is a fit. If this lesson fails, I will reduce the fee and we can part as friends. I am happy to explain all the above on our call. My standard fee is $80/hour. If you want a live reference my star student’s parents would be willing to chat with you. I can arrange this if you wish. I have been teaching K6 kids privately and in after-school programs since 2013. I bring 40 years of professional coaching in the high-tech sales arena to the table. I have studied many key related subjects (study technology, communications, accelerated learning, courseware development, presentation methods). I have developed many creative ways to teach chess to kids that work wonders at transferring “understanding” to them. As a parent, you can make a great deal of difference in your child's play, even without a coach! Please visit and register your child for my coaching website Then see “FREE CONTENT MENU.” There is a wealth of material you can use with your child to help them improve (even without a coach). There are also lots of valuable resources. I live in San Jose near Westgate and prefer to travel less than 20 minutes to my clients. If you are farther away than that please don’t contact me unless you are willing to bring your child to me. ADDITIONAL TESTIMONIALS These are testimonials that could not be posted to Thumbtack. FORM: SHANE FERNANDES, COO, KidzToPros To whom it may concern: We hired Flyn as an after-school chess coach in 2018. At the end of the 2018/19 school year, due to his stellar performance and constant inquiries to do more for KidzToPros we engaged him to create and extensive formal program for the 2019 school year. Flyn created a complete set of 30 lesson plans for the coaches to use in their sessions. He provided detail that allows nearly anyone who has a competent understanding of the game to provide a great lesson for the kids. Additionally, he created a complete instructor training program to ensure all our instructors can teach at the highest level. This two-hour set of videos gives the coaches a variety of techniques and methods Flyn has developed for being successful with the kids. It covers every aspect of running the class, teaching chess and communicating with the kids. I can tell you from personal observation of his coaching of one of our employee’s kids, that he is simply phenomenal with kids. He’s engaging and teaches in a self-discovery mode, helping that allows his students to discover the right ideas and answers as they go. I would highly recommend him to any parent or school that desires chess instruction for their child or program. Regards Shane…. KidzToPros: Is a US-based provider of after-school educational programs throughout the country FROM PRITEE GUPTA I met Flyn when he was hired to help Kids to Pros, develop our after-school-program. Flyn taught chess classes for us for about 2 years before he was hired by the COO on a contract basis to do some projects for our chess program. He was soon brought on as the Director of the Chess Program, where he proceeded to develop a full year’s curriculum for the coaches to teach and a training program for the coaches to improve their effectiveness. In the conversations that followed his employment, he discovered that my daughter, age 10, was interested in chess. He offered to give her a lesson as we could film it and use it for our program. I was not prepared for what happened. He sat down with my daughter for about 90 minutes of chess instruction – she was totally engaged for the full 90 minutes – she never even blinked. I told him after the lesson she'd never been that engaged for that long about anything. I understood why this happened, as Flyn has a “self-discovery” teaching method and personality the kids can’t resist. Shortly after that, we hired Flyn to give her private lessons – she made amazing progress and yes, she was always fully engaged whenever he arrived. She made quick and obvious progress. It’s hard to imagine I could have made a better choice. If you’re looking to have your child coached at chess, I can unconditionally recommend Coach Flyn as your guy. Regards Pritee Gupta <----

My name is Sheela. My daughter, age 7, was interested in chess. She’d been taking online lessons for about 6 months when I decided it might be good to have a live coach. Coach Flyn has only given my daughter 3 lessons. I write this testimonial to share the goldmine I discovered in him with you. Sorry this is long but my husband and I could easily do another page on Flyn. I am writing this in the hope you won’t miss out. I found Coach Flyn on Thumbtack. His profile was impressive, so I called and had a chat. The first thing I noticed and could feel talking with him was that he had a great passion for chess and kids. So I asked him to do a lesson. It turns out he’s amazing at what he does and how he worked with my daughter. My husband and I were both blown away. He told me his lessons were 90 minutes. My first thought was my daughter would never be able to pay attention for anywhere near that amount of time. However, Flyn fully engaged her for the entire 90 minutes. She never lost her attention and grasped everything he taught. The lesson resulted in my daughter being inspired to a point that even surprised us. She now talks chess all the time and does hours of homework as suggested by Flyn. This is not with my encouragement, mind you, she wants to do it and sets and keeps her study schedule. Flyn’s an extraordinary mentor and coach. He has a unique ability to make chess accessible and enjoyable for young learners. His teaching style goes beyond mere instruction; it is infused with enthusiasm and a genuine passion for the game. My daughter, who initially had little interest in chess, was quickly captivated by Flyn’s engaging and interactive lessons. She’s still a beginner but he’s already taught her some fairly complex things many don’t know and can’t do: using the opposition, queening a pawn (king+pawn vs. king) and both the king and queen and king and rook checkmates (properly). I’m going to leave it here and just say you must consider him if you are looking for a coach for your child. By the way, you will also receive coaching on how to help your child get better. I’ve written out the story of the first few lessons. If you’re interested, CLICK HERE to read it.

We met Flyn via my daughter's attendance of one of Flyn's after-school coaching programs. My daughter went from zero to playing in short order and really enjoyed working with Flyn. We decided to have Flyn give her private lessons. In that discussion my wife and I decided we'd really like to learn the game as well. This led to Flyn teaching us all with a focus on my daughter. This has worked wonderfully, and we have all learned a lot, we just haven't been able to keep up with my daughter. Flyn's work with her has produced amazing results. In the first few weeks I was able to beat her most of the time-now I'm on the verge of not being able to win a game and we've only done 8 lessons. Flyn says that she is better that a good number of his K6 after-school students many of whom are older than her. Between his entertaining style and self-discovery teaching method which constantly challenges the student he is completely engaging and has, in our eyes, produced amazing results with our daughter.

My son met Coach Flyn at his school during an after-school chess program he taught there. My son came to me shortly after the program began and told me he really wanted to take lessons from Coach Flyn. So, we invited him to come and do the first lesson and my son loved it. We set up a schedule for 90-minute weekly sessions. As a dad, I found Flyn wonderful to work with, always open and always looking for ways to improve the quality of the lessons. Most young children are not capable of guiding their own learning, especially if its a subject as complex as chess. Flyn invited me to participate in the lessons whenever I wanted to – his goal being that I would be able to help my son outside the lessons with that experience. Coach Flyn explained the importance of learning the fundamentals of chess, tactics, endgames and basic strategy and his work with my so stayed laser focused on those subjects. My son showed improvement nearly immediately. Flyn uses a “discovery” learning method where he rarely answers direct questions about things but forces the student through questions and clues to figure out the answer. Although Coach Flyn is perfectly willing to work with children that won’t give their 100% extracurricular attention to chess, he does assign homework every week and lets them decide how much work they will do. I highly recommend Coach Flyn. He’s great with kids and constantly gives more than he’s paid for in his own homework and as a resource for the child’s efforts.

We have had a good start with Chess Coach Flyn. We hired Flyn because I believe playing chess can help my children improve their attention, cultivate calmness, self-control, self-regulation, seriousness, intelligence, and logical thinking. I believe the benefits of playing chess will last them a lifetime. My kids told me clearly before the class that they were tired and didn't want to learn to play chess. And I told Flyn this before the first lesson. I also said, I’m hoping you can get them interested. I watched the first lesson (and a couple others) and believe Flyn’s engaging nature and teaching methods changed their minds about the game. After the first lesson they said they had fun and they really wanted to continue with the lessons. Flyn has a great way with children, creating an atmosphere where they want to listen and actively participate. Both my kids had fun and were very attentive for the whole lesson. It turns out that Flyn’s also very good at teaching chess. In the third lesson they played part of a game against each other. The knew how all the pieces moved and move them correctly during the game. Flyn said that’s very good for beginners as most make movement errors even after they’ve played for a while. I couldn’t have hoped for any more at this point. My kids are so proud after the lessons they come and tell me what they learned. I was very happy to see how proud and confident they were when they told me how to play chess after class. I am grateful for Flyn’s dedication and was lucky to find a such a good teacher, one who helped my children to enjoy playing chess. I’m looking forward to more lessons for my kids with Coach Flyn. I would recommend him to other parents without any reservations.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Flyn as a chess coach to any parent looking for someone to help move their child to the next level. Flyn has taught for me for over 3 years. He’s taught afterschool classes, summer camps and our Saturday in-house sessions. His passion for kids and chess is amazing. He brings to his chess coaching skills 3 decades of high level inside sales training and coaching experience in the high-tech industry. He’s attended hundreds of hours of professional accelerated learning, study technology, presentation, and courseware development training. He’s brought us some wonderful teaching techniques he developed for helping kids better master the movement and vision of the pieces. When he’s taught at our chess center, he’s always taken the extra step of chatting with the parents to make suggestions and help them with their child’s chess if possible. He’s a master of engaging the kids in his teaching and gets great results. I’m currently in discussions with him to get more involved in our programs. If you need a great coach, you need look no further – you found him. Regards, Ted Castro
