Introduction: Teaching in-person (fully vaccinated) in San Jose (Cambrian Park) CA as well as select online students. Please check my location first if you're interested in local in-person lessons. I have a nearly full studio but recently had 2 spots open up. Very Experienced in Performance Exams. Hi There, Welcome to my profile. I am a highly experienced piano teacher equally comfortable teaching advanced level classical piano and rock piano. My training is classical (BA classical piano performance from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, 10 years of private lessons with a Rachmaninoff expert, advanced studies in piano pedagogy); yet I've played with local bands and compose crossover music. My original music is a cross between classical and rock. I've taught at both the college level and studied pedagogy extensively as well as ran for my own private piano studio for over 15 years. I only teach piano and am incredibly passionate about playing and composing. I love teaching piano and want to share my love of piano with you no matter whether you're new to piano or are a Chopin lover like myself and want to learn the Ballade in G minor or the Rachmaninoff Prelude in #C minor. I provide my students with a comprehensive foundation in theory, technique, and proper posture/hand position and cover some of the most beautiful repertoire in the field. Each student gets customized lessons that best address their strengths as well as the areas that they need work in. I also provide detailed practice instructions which is important as many students do not know how to practice. We set learning goals and we meet them; I can guarantee that after many years of teaching. I have taught piano since I was a teen and have been winning awards and scholarships since then. One of the first was acceptance into the prestigious piano master class at University of the Pacific at age 14. I started performing as a teen and currently compose my own music and perform with a crossover trio. I teach improv and songwriting and about a third of my younger students work with me on composition or arranging. I customize lessons to fit each unique individual. My light and large piano studio has a 6'1 YAMAHA C3 (An incredible grand piano), Stage 2 Nord Synthesizer (the best synthesizer money can buy), and an upright Baldwin. Most of my students are age 7-14; but I do also teach motivated adults. I typically provide everything you need including all music except for lesson books. I have 3-4 recitals a year a formal recital hall and multiple informal performing opportunities/small recitals for students at my studio on my grand. It's very important to also practice performing as that is an art in itself. If your child or you study with me, you will see clear and rapid progress, yet you or your child will really enjoy the journey. My students progress and learn to play rapidly as I customize lessons to best fit their strengths. Piano and playing/composing/teaching piano is my greatest passion in life. I invite you to let me teach you the beauty of music and joy of playing.

Piano Lessons

My 7 years old girl started her piano zoom lesson with Ms.Toby in Dec last year, at that time she had quit her class for half an year because of Covid. We’re so thankful to have Ms. Toby at this difficult time.  Ms. Toby is knowlegeable and skillful on piano playing. Her class is encouraging, approaching and patient. She tailors class on my daughter’s pace and favorite, combines theory, finger skills and music playing in each class. Now my girl is able to grab a small song after 2-3 classes, she’s alway excited for the next song. I’m so glad to see her make every progress.

Piano Lessons

It’s been one year since my son, who’s eight years old, has started piano lessons with Toby without any prior tutelage. He has progressed immensely in that time span that it’s hard to believe it’s only been one year! Toby is patient, attentive, and gives constructive feedback in a way that he’s able to grasp and utilize. Along with piano lessons she also arranges recitals with all of her students that give students something to work toward, and look forward too. Since the start of the shelter-in-place during this pandemic, she has transitioned to zoom lessons that he’s still able to learn and advance his skill level. I definitely recommend!!
