Tom built my 12 X 10 Cedar Pergola from SAM's club. Tom told me he was going to be at my home at 1100.He arrived at 1055. That's when I knew I picked the right guy. Tom is a professional and very friendly. He is open to communication and suggestions. His price for the project was the most affordable for me. My family is enjoying our Pergola, Thanks Tom. I would hire Tom again for any future projects.

Jose was on-time and very professional. He helped us with a few demolition projects, including some trim and a pergola roof. Fair price; I would use him again.

John is knowledgeable and very professional. He's even charismatic and likable, I enjoyed John being at my home doing the work. John just completed a unique project for me by building a new trellis under my huge Jasmine tree which was about to keel over from the rotting and failing original trellis. John started right away and he completed the job in just 2 days. Had I done it myself it would have taken me a week or more... Now, I have something that will last for 30 years or more. You should see this thing, it's sturdy as hell AND it looks great, adding to the curb appeal of my home. I will definitely look to hire John again for some future projects.

I don't think 5 stars is enough, Stan was extremely professional from the get go and dispite the weather setting the schedule back he was beyond reliable throughout the whole process. Communication was clear and constant, he always kept me up to date on everything going on. The customer service he provided was exceptional and our pergola looks amazing thanks to him. I highly recommend him.

Oustanding! David is professional and knowledgeable. Finished product is great quality and cost thousands less than the big guys. Pergola project completed in 2 days. It was constructed in a challenging space bordering a lot of new plantings and the guys managed it with ease. I really can't say enough good things

Brendt created this pergola for us on budget, on time and as a matter of fact even did other work around my house which adds even more value to his services. He is very efficient and knowledgeable and will communicate with you every step of the way. Don't hesitate to use his services, finally a contractor that I can trust in full. Thank you for making our ideas come to life.

We just wrapped up the fence project for our house which was massive. Dick followed my concept and made revisions whenever i required. It was fun and easy to work with him. There's always a 2 way mindset. It turned out excellent, including the trellis and pergola. The 2 small gates out front to give us security was installed and my overall look is splendid to view! Would recommend Dick to anyone having a home project. He delivers!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
