John Linneball helped me with SAT tutoring, especially in the math sections. The sessions took place at my house every week, but if ever there was a problem, communication was made easy through email. He really helped me and we clocked in many hours of math exercises. Not to mention, he gave me suggestions on what I should work on during my alone time.

John is an extremely conscientious, thoughtful, and helpful LSAT tutor. I turned to John after months of self-study (and putting off the LSAT again and again because I didn't feel ready). He helped me wrap my head around some of the trickier LR problems and also had a great way to think about LG that made something just click. The amount of work John put in prepping for our tutoring sessions really blew me away. He came to each session prepared, had plenty of materials to suggest, and had a clear plan for each session. Furthermore, he's extremely accessible over email and text. If I had a tough practice section and felt panicked or if I had any questions around strategies or approach, I knew I could email John and he'd answer my questions promptly. John really cares about his students and their successes and I'd highly recommend him as an LSAT tutor!

Lillian has been tutoring my daughter in Mandarin, both speaking and writing for about six months through weekly 1 hour sessions at our home. Lillian has an upbeat and warm personality and is passionate about teaching. I am impressed at how she mixes up the lesson so that my fidgety 7 year old remains engaged the entire time. She uses a variety of print, audio and video materials. She focuses on proper technique in speaking and writing while always remaining positive and encouraging. We are so lucky to have found Lillian, and my daughter's interest in learning Mandarin has only grown!

Kathleen has made a tremendous difference in our son's Spanish skills. He's had a difficult teacher in school this year and Kathleen has helped to build this knowledge, understanding and confidence with both written and verbal work. Our son has said that Kathleen has been a tremendous help to him. She is reliable and I've felt she genuinely wants her students to succeed.

Tim was a great teacher for me! He was easy to talk to,understood my questions, and helped me improve my weak points. After working with him for a few months, I was able to understand a lot of the material provided in the SAT test and improve a lot on my practice test. Overall, Tim is a great teacher for learning how to improve your English , especially to prepare for SAT test.

Yevgeny helped me with business calculus class. This class was extremely important for me to pass as most 4 year colleges I was trying to get into wanted me to take it. During the 16 week semester, Yevgeny would come twice a week to help me with my homework and go over each chapter in depth. We would spend almost two hours each session on different problems and he would show me how to do each one. However, he doesn't do each problem for you but instead would have me do the problem on my own and give me help if I needed it. He made sure I understood each chapter we would go over before going onto the next. Yevgeny is a great person who really cares about the success of those he is tutoring. He understands many different math courses and is really smart. Without his help I wouldn't have passed my class and gone on to transfer to my 4 year college. I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of help in any math course.

Bryce is an excellent GRE tutor. When I first started studying for the test, I was overwhelmed, confused and frustrated by just opening my practice book. I hadn't taken a math or English course in years. Bryce helped ease those fears and boosted my confidence. After the initial meeting, I knew that he would be a great tutor for me. I continued seeing Bryce for tutoring in the weeks before my test. We practiced strategies and how to approach a difficult problem. Knowing the strategies for the GRE is extremely helpful. You can memorize ten thousand vocabulary words (as I attempted), but until you know how to approach the problem, hammering in definitions won't be much help. Bryce taught me the strategies necessary and had confidence in me all the way. He is intelligent, reliable, and benevolent (great GRE word!). I would absolutely recommend Bryce to anyone looking for a tutor, especially with the GRE. It can be a daunting test, but given the help I received from Bryce, I went in on test day feeling confident that I could pass (and I did!).

Ms. Zepeda has been tutoring my homeschooled 4th grade son in Spanish. He is very bright but new to the language, and really needed a sharp, encouraging, supportive instructor to help him along. Raquel has been such a wonderful blessing. Warm, patient, intelligent, dependable, and professional--she's been fantastic for our child. He is learning a lot and is excited about the process, due in no small amount to her fun and savvy guidance. He really looks forward to lessons with her! I would highly recommend you see if she is a match for your family, as well.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

    • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
    • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
    • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
    • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
