One of the best professional writers I have come across. Born wordsmith. Knows exactly how to handle the tricky and delicate circumstances. Ability to re-frame anything to fit the desired result. Whether it is spinning a negative into a positive or writing with emotion to evoke a desired result, she is a master of all. My experience has been wonderful.

Koppelman & Associates produced outstanding video and other creative work for a project involving Bay Area transit agencies. Charles Koppelman really understood his client's needs and was strategic in developing a vision for how to best meet those needs. He kept the entire project on track and delivered a high-quality TV spot along with a range of other creative materials and recommendations. He also managed production costs well, which was key since the project had a pretty tight budget, and adhered to an ambitious timeline. I would highly recommend Koppelman & Associates for video production and other creative work.

She was super good and easy to work with. Final project came out better then expected. Most reasonable creative writer you can find for a very affordable price out there. I wouldn't try anyone else but her for my next project.

I’ve always had a fear of stepping out on my creative journey due to the thought of failure; working with Tony helped me get over that. Now I’m in the beginning stages of writing my first poetry book and starting up a jewelry business. I would have never been able to do that without Tony’s support.

Anish always arrived fully prepared for each lesson. He is super capable and has a way to make even mundane material somewhat interesting. I would recommend him to anyone that wants to increase their score, and fast. He is also an excellent writer, and really put these skills to work when brainstorming with me for my personal statement.

I appreciate his attention to detail. He is informative and offers insight as to why he is making certain edits to aid in my growth and development as a writer. He provides constructive criticism when necessary while preserving my autonomy. He has been a valuable asset to my research writing. Noteworthy: Julian is not trained in scientific writing and has provided me with the most meaningful edits when compared to those who are trained in the field. The sign of a truly extraordinary editor. Highly recommend.

I strongly believe that the ability to write an effective and targeted resume to get the attention of potential employers requires special skills, and Michele definitely possesses these skills. Due to my diminishing knowledge of English grammar, I searched the Internet for an editor to help navigate the murky byways of periods, commas, verb endings and sentence structure. Thankfully I came upon Steve Dulas, a former copy editor for a local county newspaper in the San Francisco Bay area. I couldn't be more pleased with Steve’s work. Not only does he have a lifetime career in editing and turning out “clean” copy, but I found he also carefully reads for content and offers creative and sometimes just common sense advice to look at vague or weak areas so that the narrative flows and is coherent. This advice is always given as a kind suggestion; Steve is never demeaning or heavy handed. Steve reviewed half of my book (45,000 words) in a timely two week period, sending me one copy with the changes and yet another copy with creative thoughts in specific places. It really was an outstanding job. I can happily give Steve a five star reference and am certain anyone would be as pleased as I was to find him. I plan to use him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
