I reached out to three of the highest-rated landscapers on Thumbtack, and Abel immediately set himself apart. He was the first to respond—and the only one who actually showed up on time (he was even early). I never even received quotes from the other two. I had a large, complex project, and as a homeowner you never really know what you’re going to get—you just hope for the best. With Abel, I got far more than I expected. The project started with my backyard, which had 3–4 inches of compacted, weed-covered topsoil from years of neglect and no irrigation. Abel and his crew removed all of it, brought in fresh 50/50 soil, and leveled everything perfectly. The transformation just from that step alone was impressive. Next was a full irrigation overhaul. My existing system was damaged in multiple areas and partially removed during a previous concrete job. Abel replaced the entire system, but what really stood out was how proactive he was—he fixed drainage issues left behind by the concrete contractor without me even asking. The drain tops were uneven and sticking up, so he cut them down, leveled them properly, and made them functional again while eliminating trip hazards. One of the toughest parts of the job was relocating my backyard water supply line. It was buried about 3 feet deep next to my driveway and connected with old galvanized steel piping, which is not easy to work with. Abel handled it like a pro—relocated the line into the backyard and upgraded it to Schedule 80 PVC for much better strength and longevity (instead of the typical Schedule 40 most people use). From there, he ran three separate irrigation zones throughout my backyard for proper, even coverage. Everything was done methodically and with future planning in mind. He installed a new spigot with a shut-off valve and even added a low-pressure line for a future drip system in case I wanted to expand later—something I didn’t even think about. After that, Abel and his crew installed my new sod and dialed in the sprinklers perfectly. Coverage was spot on. Another great recommendation Abel made was installing WiFi sprinkler timers, which has been incredibly convenient. I can control and adjust everything right from my phone, making it easy to fine-tune watering schedules without any hassle. I also had a small sloped hill (about 6 feet wide) covered in weeds. Abel removed everything, planted around 50 flowers, and installed a very clean, hidden drip irrigation system with two rows running about 65 feet each. Because he had already planned ahead with the irrigation setup, adding the drip system was seamless. He also installed bender board at the base of the hill to create a clean separation from the lawn. As the project progressed, I kept realizing how valuable it was to have someone this skilled on-site, so I added more work. Abel installed drip lines in my front yard flower beds and along the edge of my driveway, where there was previously just weeds and debris. He and his crew cleaned everything up, refreshed the area, planted colorful flowers, and added gorilla hair mulch for a clean, finished look and better durability. He also completely redid another front flower bed that had no irrigation, dying plants, and was overrun with weeds. He replanted it with succulents and flowers, each with its own drip emitter, and finished it with mulch so it looks clean and low-maintenance. Another great recommendation from Abel was using decomposed granite with stabilizer for a narrow strip between my backyard sidewalk and the flower hill. Now I don’t have to worry about mud, runoff, or making a mess when it rains—it was a simple but very smart solution. His attention to detail was consistent across everything. Electrical wiring was run cleanly and hidden—whether that meant tucking it along the house or running it through cracks in the concrete and sealing it so it blended in. Nothing was sloppy or rushed. Abel is also extremely resourceful. At one point, he had some leftover bender board and took the initiative (without being asked) to use it along the front sidewalk to prevent soil from washing out—just another example of how he’s always thinking ahead. On top of the workmanship, Abel and his crew were incredibly respectful of my property. They kept everything clean throughout the project and even removed debris that was there before they started. That level of care is rare. Communication was excellent the entire time. Abel showed up on time every day, gave progress updates before leaving, and walked me through the plan for the next day. It made the whole process feel organized and collaborative. It’s not easy to find someone who is this skilled, detail-oriented, honest, and genuinely passionate about their work. Abel went above and beyond at every stage of the project—not because he had to, but because he takes pride in what he does. My project took about a week, and the results exceeded my expectations in every way. My family and I are going to enjoy this yard for years to come. I would hire Abel again in a heartbeat.
