Powerhouse provides value for the work performed, and they are flexible. Originally, we were going to refinish the floors in four rooms, but we discovered that we were happier with having one room refinished, and the other three rooms carpeted. The company was able to accommodate our desires. We dealt with nine different people associated with Powerhouse including people who analyzed the ability to * Remove squeaks without damaging underlying hardwood floors (not possible); * Floor refinisher; * Molding installers; * Estimate carpeting size; * Minimize the amount of carpeting to select; * Selecting the carpet that best fit our needs; * Purchasing carpet and padding (different vendors); * Carpet installation; * Cleaning; and * Moving heavy furniture, as needed. There were little things that needed to be adjusted, and Michael oversaw different crews who worked with us to make the required adjustments. Personnel were courteous, knew their business, kept appointments, and did neat work. Prices were reasonable. We will use them again. The following is not related to Powerhouse, but are two hints that may be useful to you: 1. If you refinish your floors, there is considerable smell from the varnish. If you leave wet coffee grounds in the room, and baking soda in a separate dish, it will help to absorb the smell. 2. I painted one of the rooms myself, and I found that using the new high-quality 3/8" nap rollers did not work as well as using Purdy rollers.

Jerry was very nice and offered a great quote for the job. He completed an interior paint job, which was difficult as the walls near the stairway reach to about 22 feet. He was creative with his approach and it worked. Thanks Jerry! The shutters have now been installed and the house looks like new. Thanks again!

Above the Rim went above and beyond! My project was supposed simple, move a large 10ft reception desk from the 2nd floor of an office building to another 2nd floor office. Not too bad one might think, but more than I wanted to deal with. This job was quite a feat in itself, but come to find out on moving day that the desk I bought was glued together in multiple locations and was not an easy disassembly. These guys painstakingly separated each board necessary to break down the desk into manageable parts so it could be moved without a bit of damage to the desk. Once moved they reassembled and practically rebuilt the entire desk from the dozens of tiny pieces. They bid on the job for 4 hours labor and ended up spending 8. This was not any fault of theirs, just the people that sold me the desk and didn't bother to tell me it was glued together. In this time they made sure the job was immaculate by the time it was done, without charging a cent over the quoted price. These guys were professional, meticulous and personable every step of the way. I highly recommend Above the Rim for anyone needing a handyman service or moving service or in my case, both.

I hired Joseph to paint a high-ceiling wall in my house. Joseph was very responsive to my messages, and did a great job painting the wall. He was also very careful and thorough with his approach and work. He also quoted me a reasonable price to paint the wall. I strongly recommend Joseph for all sorts of construction related jobs around the house.

Alan isn’t your average Joe handyman; he’s a one man construction crew. Of the half dozen or so replies I received from my Thumbtack inquiry, he was the only one who specifically addressed my needs. My project, a kitchen remodel. Alan removed old cabinets, counter etc. Installed new, in a new design arrangement, which included cutting a section of wall. Additionally he installed a new sink and plumbed to allow a double basin where a single basin was, new over - range microwave and laminate flooring in three areas. He’s punctual, consciences and highly qualified.

Fields of Flooring did an outstanding job of installing wood flooring in our master bedroom, bathroom, and two closets. The quality of their installation was fantastic. They did not rush the installation and made everything flow in the correct fashion. Even the crawl space door that is in the floor to under the house, they spent at least two hours doing it right.

Our first experience with Troy was in 2009 when he worked on our bedroom extension and remodel of the master bath at our home in Grand Terrace, CA. The entire job took about 6 weeks as we had to remove a patio and deck in the process. From start to finish, Troy was professional in his work and very easy to talk to and make decisions with. He did an excellent job with the framing and roofing as well as the installation of new bathroom fixtures and tile work, both in the tub area and the flooring. If there was something we questioned or asked to have done differently (i.e., taking back a bathtub to replace it with a larger, soaking tub), Troy was always accommodating and happy to do what we wanted. When that project was completed, Troy framed and installed a new deck and sidewalk in our backyard.Over the next four years, we had more projects that we called Troy for help with and he was always ready and willing to come take a look, give a bid, and tackle the work. We had him install attic fans in the house, make and install shutters on the front windows, and paint our house. The work was always done to our satisfaction and we miss being able to call him for work we'd like to have done as he is no longer in southern CA.We highly recommend Troy Malley as a professional handyman whose work is exemplary. My husband and I rented an older home in order to give our almost two year old son more room to play. The house was terribly outdated and had bad paint, old appliances and carpeting everywhere, including the bathrooms and kitchen. It left a lot to be desired. We hired Noe based on seeing his previous work in another home. He repainted the walls for us flawlessly and finished all the trims by hand. We were grateful and even more impressed by his tile work. He tore up ALL the carpeting in our home and replaced most of it with tile. His work was very precise and he is clearly someone who takes pride in his craft. He also replaced the appliances, sanded and stained the hardwood floors (which were hidden under the ugly carpet in a few rooms), painted the baseboards, replaced a wall radiator and cleaned up all the debris and trash from the remodel. It took him about a week to do all the work himself, the job was priced fairly and the work was very high quality. We would definitely hire him again and recommend Noe to family and friends. My only thought for improvement would be for him to create a website for the company. That way we could easily direct people to his site for all their home improvement needs.

My husband and I hired Chris and his crew to do the roof on our new home as well as the roof on our existing house. The new home we knew needed less work due to it being new construction and originally had no intention of messing with our old home since we were putting it up for sale. The job they did and the manner in which Chris handled any and every dilemma, minor along with major, just blew us away. We are far into our 60s, my husband and myself, and very much set in our ways. We hold onto our money and expect to get every bang for every buck spent. Chris didn't feign understanding he actually appreciated our position and met every request, no matter how demanding or insane, we made each time. When he was not able to accomplish or acquire what we sought he didn't pull a fast one, never hit us with outrageous hidden or after the fact costs. He came personally to inform us of everything each step of the way. His charming and very down to earth, honest nature makes him and his employees more than hired help; to us they are very close to family in our eyes and hearts. Because of this we have since used the services of Complete Home Maintenance on two roofs, gutters, interior and exterior painting of our new home, carpet to hard wood flooring on all 3600 sq ft and they are currently fixing the disaster tile work done by another, not to be given the satisfaction of a mention, handyman/remodeling specialist in our master bathroom. Along with the big jobs have been countless 'honey-dos' that myself and husband have requested throughout each project. I want to make clear I am not aware of anyone else's position or experience with Chris or his company short of the friend who referred CHM to us and the expectation shouldn't be assumed, however, it should be mentioned that many of the smaller items such as installation of some appliances, plumbing issues, fence work and landscaping (minor jobs) went uncharged or bundled in at impossible to pass up discounted amounts. I am forever grateful to have received the referral of Chris and his team. This experience has given us such a different outlook on our untimely and unplanned transition between what was our dream home of 35 years into what we can now afford in today's market. We are on an adventure and we have been inspired to take pride in our new home and life which I promise you was nothing my husband nor I imagined possible. Please consider CHM for your current or upcoming project needs. You won't be disappointed I'm sure of this. This is the first review I have ever given and I hope I have completed it appropriately and at the same time given you the courage to make the call to Chris and his company.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

        • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
        • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
        • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
        • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
        • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
        • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

        What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
