I've been working with Mikado stylists for about a year and absolutely love what they do. I don't have to think about going to the mall or figuring out what to wear. As a man, that was always a real stressor for me. Now it is completely taken care of. I know what to wear to work and what to wear for leisure, I always have great clothes and never need to deal with shopping.

I have known Amy for years. She has advised me on fashion multiple times and for a wide variety of occasions. For example, I had a very fancy summer wedding to attend. I was on a budget (I wanted to spend $200 or less) and Amy immediately suggested that I go to the Tadashi Shoji store at South Coast Plaza. She found a beautiful midnight blue dress that fit me perfectly! (And for just $160)!!! She helped me complete my entire outfit with a pair of gorgeous nude pumps. I've never received more compliments in my life!! Another example of Amy's fashion expertise is when I did a boudoir photo shoot. Amy wanted a vintage 1950's pin up look for me. She took me shopping and put together an outfit that was classy and incredibly sexy! One last example I have to share is also the most recent. A couple of months ago I went to see Lady Gaga in concert. I wanted a fun, sexy outfit that was not too over-the-top. Once again, Amy hit it out of the park. No matter what the occasion or your budget, Amy has the fashion knowledge to make you look and feel beautiful. I just chose these examples to show how wide of a range her understanding of fashion is. If you let Amy be your fashion consultant, you will NOT regret it! I don't know what I'd do without her! She absolutely knows her stuff and you will end up looking AMAZING!

Sophie Mae is wonderfully talented, thinking outside of the box with colors, patterns and accessories. She's current with fashion now and perhaps the most comforting thing is that she is not phased by ones personal body opinions. She looks at her clients and knows instantly all the little tricks to make you look great. I think we eliminated all but 10 pieces of my wardrobe on our initial meeting. I feel so happy because I understand now how to shop and what to look for. No more wasting money or shopping on impulse. She also works with any budget and has that clear common sense of an artist who knows her medium. Lastly she's full service and can talk with you about hair and makeup as well. I feel excited and beautiful and can't wait for our shopping trip!

I recently went through a wardrobe purge because of weight gain and an upcoming career transition, so I was seeking a stylist in the Bay Area of Northern California. I received quotes from other stylists in the Bay Area, in California, and out of state, who immediately told me their hourly rate and the services they provided. I appreciate the quick information but this didn't work for me; I am not only inquiring for a project, but also establishing a business relationship. How will their skills fit with the aesthetic I'm looking for if they just immediately tell me their rate and services? Most of all, who are these people? I can look at their portfolios, look them up on LinkedIn, view their websites, but will they work well with me? Will we communicate well? Will our styles clash? I chose Barbra initially because out of the proposed stylists she was the most collaborative, and the most engaging. Barbra was different - instead of telling me her rate, she asked qualifying questions to understand not only who I am, but what my overall take is from getting a stylist. Through here, we began a dialogue and we both got to know each other to see if this would be a good fit. In addition to her professional communication, she has an online presence, LA/NY Fashion Industry experience, and her portfolio shows versatility in style, with a clean aesthetic. I wanted to work with her, so I went forward with a session. Once again, I had a closet purge - my wardrobe can fit in two shelves. How can a woman over android google hangouts, pull out three new looks out of what I have left, a list full of shopping action items, lifestyle tips, and also career/business advising within 15 minutes?? Who does that?? After my session with Barbra I have an outlined Christmas AND NEW YEARS to do list! Barbra is knowledgeable, personable, creative, industry experienced and above all else a real person. She is a people person and wants to help real people feel better about themselves. I highly recommend her. If anything, message her now. Do it!

Mariangela is the first fashion consultant that I've ever worked with and she made this such an enjoyable process! She has a very bubbly personality and was a joy to be around. She was punctual and has great advice- she knows what she's doing! I just had my first baby and I needed to update my wardrobe to match. We went shopping and she picked out some lovely pieces for me that I would have never been brave enough to try, but she gave me the confidence to try- I couldn't be happier!! She transformed my closet- I never feel like I don't have anything to wear now! I've recommended her to all of my young mom friends! Thank you, Mariangela, and I can't wait for our next meeting!!

Chris has been a long time friend and someone that I always turn to in terms of fashion advice. He was recently our stylist at my wedding. He helped me and my groomsmen pick out our wedding suits and also helped us with our ties as well as how we should wear our attire. I was very pleased with our attire and we received many compliments. He has helped me throughout my life with fashion in important events as well. Chris is someone who is passionate about what he does. He will give you the best advice and will tailor to your needs.

Like any other guy shopping wasn't exactly my favorite thing to do. Tina has been my personal shopper/stylist for the last year and I must say she's great at what she does. I tell her what I'm looking for, give her a range of how much I'd like to spend, and she delivers. I am a photographer and have also used Tina on several photo shoots. She's great at what she does and I highly recommend her for all your styling and shopping needs.

I am not the most fashionable guy. Most of my clothes come from Costco. So when my girlfriend said something about the pants I was wearing and said that I needed to step up my game, I knew it was time for professional help. I was referred to Leslie by a friend and I am glad I met her. She helped give me confidence to try new things--this past summer she told me red pants were big in Europe on men and found me a pair. I was skeptical but I wore them to a summer bbq and got lots of compliments. More importantly, my girlfriend was happy. I am continuing to work with Leslie and we are now upgrading and overhauling my professional wardrobe. Can't recommend her highly enough.

I had a photo shoot to do for an event and Crystal helped with the wardrobe. Everything she pieced together looked amazing and she was so easy to work with! We went shopping beforehand and she made the experience so fun! She's super easy to talk to, understood my preferences, knew what works and what didn't with my body type. Overall, I had the best experience and I'm so glad I found her. Next is having her help clean out my closet and piece together new outfits with what I already have. You won't we disappointed.

Barbra's true passion is playing the role of "The People's Stylist", spreading the word that working with an image consultant is not just for the red carpet or the rich and famous anymore. A nationally recognized personal stylist, Barbra is frequently flown around the country to work with women and men, teaching them her "eco-selfish" and economical approach to fashion. As Barbra likes to say, "I am not hugging trees, but there are shades of green in everything I do."

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

    What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.

    What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.

What does an image consultant do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. Image consultants help clients in a number of ways. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion, using what the client already owns or making a targeted shopping trip.
