FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I work by the hour as well as on a fixed-price basis so that customers can manage their editing budgets within their financial constraints. I try to scope the actual time and cost at the beginning, regardless of how services are priced. My rates would typically be considered on the high end of the range for editing services.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
In a first meeting, I work with my client to determine the overall goal for the book or other document. The extent and type of editing naturally flows from that. As for the more technical elements, I typically review a chapter or two of the manuscript, as well as a few pages selected at random, in order to determine the level of editing that is needed given the customer's goal for the work. There is also a discussion about overall budget and how much editing/rewriting a client wants me to do. Some want to know what needs work, but want to make the changes themselves. Most, however, want me to identify the problem areas and fix them, including substantial rewriting or plotting if needed, and they review the draft after those changes are made. Depending on the scope of a potential change, we may meet or discuss the change first to make sure we are on the same page and so that I can meet the customer's expectations for the finished product.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received my copyediting certification from UC San Diego in June 2014.
