Introduction: We are teachers with public/government school backgrounds and have had to research "soul search' for years regarding methodologies. If you're in an institute with business English students, the level of motivation the students have comes from the fact that first, they maybe paying for the classes themselves, and second, their employment and/or future employment is at stake. What about public school kids? Where is their motivation? For many of them, it certainly doesn't come from marks or grades. The natural approach, TPR, scaffolding (sheltered instruction) and TPRS were developed in the public school arena in schools in the U.S. with a high percentage of students who begin school speaking a language other than English, and they are widely accepted in those schools, because they work. We use these methodologies in our curriculum design and in our daily teaching. We focus on fun (the real key to engagement), and we focus on comprehensibility, which leads to real language acquisition. When these methodologies are used properly with immigrant kids, they work. When they're used with motivated adults and adolescents, the results are even more striking.
