About
There is an art to teaching guitar. Being a great player does not make you a great teacher necessarily. I have seen many guitar players claim to be music teachers. It is not my intent to put anyone down but many players consider themselves teachers simply because they can play. They don't have a concrete "road map" to get from point A to point B - some "teachers" just "wing it". My lessons have been developed over the last 30 years to TEACH music in a way that not only provides you the skill needed in playing the instrument but also the knowledge to figure out how to play something on your own without the help of the teacher. I not only teach you how to play the guitar, I strive to give you the concepts that you need to become a real musician. These concepts will work in a majority of musical situations. I will teach you as much or as little as you want to learn. It is about your musical goals not mine.
Watching the student "get the concept." It is like watching the light bulb go on in the students mind. Smiles and enthusiasm start to appear which gets me all excited. I love to teach especially when the light switch is turned on!

I have been taking lessons with Ricky for about 4 months now, he is a really incredible teacher! He is great at keeping our lessons fun and fresh by finding a way to use what we are working on into material I like. He is very friendly and patient, I recommend Ricky to all who wish to learn to play guitar!

Ricky is a very energetic and engaging teacher. He focuses on teaching the guitar techniques and styles you want to learn. Ricky is well-organized and has large amounts of prepared material for teaching. He will also prepare new material that suits your interests..
Many people want to sing when they play the guitar and Ricky will tell you he is not a vocalist. But his voice is not as bad as he thinks.

Ricky Katz is an extraordinary teacher. He has decades worth of guitar experience, and he is affordable. He genuinely cares about the wellbeing of his students, and goes above and beyond to get the student excited about the instrument. He has motivated me to dedicate so much time in my instrument, simply by making it a fun activity both inside and out of lessons. He is very understanding and knows what he is talking about. He is patient and willing to dedicate his time in teaching the student anything they wish to learn, whether it be theory, reading music or just to play a few songs for fun. I am honored to call him my guitar teacher, and if you're lucky... You'll be able to say the same!

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My rates are as follows: $40 per hour of instruction. You get a 10% discount if you purchase 4 or more consecutive lessons.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I meet with the student. If the student has never played a guitar we start from the very beginning. Meaning I talk about the guitar, how it works, the main parts of the guitar. How hold the guitar etc etc. If the student has been playing the guitar then we sit down and play together. At that point I will make an assessment of where the student is and based on what the student wants to learn / improve upon I will make my recommendations.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Started music lessons at the age of 11. Was a music major in college and at the same time started studying music with with Master teacher Ted Greene. I remained a student of Ted for over 25 years until he passed away.
