Cruz is the best! I hired him to help me out with my "honey-do" list, and he made me look good. He fixed a pesky kitchen drawer, installed a baby gate, and even hung up some art for me. He was super fast, super friendly, and walked me through all the steps as he did them. I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again, he can do it all!

We found Salinas home remodeling services most helpful in several ways. Services done for us included electrical wiring, plumbing installation, wall and ceiling painting with texture applications. Also, bathtub, sink and appliance installation. All work was done at high standards. Note: we also experienced generous and positive attitudes from soft spoken professionals, and received on time service. Above all, we have memories of his installation process that are most rewarding. Thank You, Mr. Vyron Salinas and his helper Pablo. Yours truly, Nicholas Adkins

My wife and I would give them 6 stars if I could. Gustavo and his team did an awesome job building a new fence for us. It was a somewhat complex job involving two different architectural designs (one across the front of the property and one down the side) plus installing a new iron driveway gate. My wife and I watched in amazement as they worked carefully, taking the time to get everything just right. They did a really terrific job for us and we would recommend them highly. Please feel free to contact us as a reference anytime. Thanks so much to Gustavo and his great team.

Richard helped me design and remodel some features of my home before selling. Richard has a great eye for design and is able to construct as well. Richard and his team poured a new (black) concrete driveway, built me a new lateral cedar stained fence and painted the exterior of my home navy blue. This lead to a quick sale above asking, Thanks!

We were thoroughly satisfied with the concrete work done by Kris Fredrickson, Anderson Construction’s concrete contractor. Our new driveway and sidewalk look great. Kris listened to us and did his best to accommodate our wishes, going above and beyond. We would definitely hire him again and recommend him to others. And Mike Anderson stayed in constant communication w/us making sure that we were satisfied with how the project was proceeding.

We hired Esdras for two jobs around our house. Esdras did an entrance door step remodeling for us which required some skills to customize this project. Since he did a great job we asked him to fix our two entrance gates to the backyard and to install some improvements around the landing deck of our pool area. All the jobs were accomplished in a timely manner with attention to detail. Esdras is very punctual, easy to talk to and courteous. The pricing for the project is absolutely fair without any surprises. We will definitely hire Esdras again for one of our next projects around the house.

Eduardo and his partner did a fantastic job of installing new entry doors. Eduardo gave us a very competitive estimate and was easy and flexible to work with. The doors were unique and required a bit of problem solving; they demonstrated skill and team work that allowed for a smooth and efficient installation. We’re so pleased with the work that we’re bringing them back to complete our entryway project with the installation of new tile and molding. Looking forward to working with them again!!

I hired a certain company to do some work for me years ago. Issues arose after they finished. They continually sent people out to fix the problem, but they never could fix it. I had about lost my patience when they sent out Aldo. Aldo finally fixed the problem. Aldo left a lasting impression on me with his knowledge and professionalism. A couple years later I was ready for my inlaw project. I called Aldo to see if I could hire just himself to do the project. Aldo told me he was striking out on his own and he’d be happy to. The project came out great and anything I was remotely not satisfied with was corrected. I will not bore with all the details, but I will share one story that sums up what you can expect when hiring Equilibrium. I was coming home late from dinner. Aldo was in the process of installing a skylight that week and when I left the restaurant I became concerned because it was raining. I knew there was a tarp over the hole, but I don’t think anyone expected it to rain and I’m admittedly a tad type-a. I hustled home to make sure everything was copacetic. When I arrived at around midnight, I saw Aldo’s truck in the driveway. He was on the roof making sure that everything was secure and no water was getting in through the freshly cut hole. I never called him. He drove all the way out to my home in the middle of the night just to make sure everything was ok. Class act.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
