About this pro

How does your business stand out?

My website shows various portfolios of my writing. I love writing. I am an inveterate editor. I love teaching. My writing is lively, accurate, and versatile. Give me an interesting (or even not-so-interesting) topic and I will find joy in writing about it. Give me a poorly written draft and I will enliven it, crisp it up, enrich it, and organize it down to the bone. I love doing that. I guess that's what makes my service stand out. I just love working with words and ideas, and making t hem come together in the most meaningful way I can.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

Ideas and words and wedding them together into a meaningful, coherent form. I love working with words, and helping others work with them to communicate clearly and concisely what they intend to convey. I seem to have a talent for both writing and teaching writing. I guess after 30 years of doing both, I'd better have that talent!

I am a non native English speaker. I was struggling with my comprehensive (thesis) paper. Laura helped me brain storm ideas for my paper, gave me constructive feedback, and helped me edit the paper. She spent a lot of one on one time with me and constantly stayed in touch with me. Laura is very caring and genuine and it shows in her work. She wasn't quite familiar with my topic (I am in healthcare), but she went above and beyond trying to understand what I was writing about so that she could help me best way possible. She is a great editor and a very sincere person. I am graduating this June and I may not need her help for academic papers, but I will always come to her for any writing and editing help. I will recommend her to everyone!

Working with Laura on my Web Site and on the meditations I do for my Reiki Practice was a joyful experience. She helped me put my thoughts into words and organized my interior monologs into beautiful, meaningful meditations. She is insightful, understanding and most importantly patient. Laura took the time to make sure she understood what I was trying to say or the mood I was trying to set in my meditations and helped me to craft meditations that my clients enjoy and are always asking for copies of to continue their healing process. In my business that’s the sign that you’re doing something right! Laura did it right!

I recently needed to send a sensitive email to teachers and administrators at my college. It had to catch everyone's attention, explain a complicated issue, offend no one, and lead to action. After trying unsuccessfully to write it myself, I turned to Laura. She asked me some questions to clarify her understanding of the situation, and she quickly wrote exactly what I needed. Not only was it well-written, it was effective. The responses to the email were exactly what I had hoped for. Laura is personable, smart, and a good writer. She has been my go-to writer and editor for many years, and I recommend her highly.

Laura Bernell edited what I wrote, creating a more flowing and concise article, adhering to the prescribed length.and respecting the content. I received this edited article within the time frame she promised. A following-up phone call, provided opportunity to re-visit the article and make any minor changes.

Laura has written articles for the B'nai Israel Newsletter (I am the editor) and did an impressive job on each one. On one project, she interviewed the subject, did other research, and provided our publication with a most interesting and well-written feature article. I have also reviewed several of her published articles and have been impressed with both the quality of her writing and, her ability to tell a story effectively. She is creative in her approach to a project, combining a presentation of the information with a dramatic flair when it is appropriate.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Request and review sample of the work to edit. Determine exact nature of work to be done: proofing, editing, rewriting, or writing. Talk things over with client. Provide clear timeline and fee structure, based on all of the above.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Request and review sample of the work to edit. Determine exact nature of work to be done: proofing, editing, rewriting, or writing. Talk things over with client. Provide clear timeline and fee structure, based on all of the above. Provide regular updates on work, and receive feedback. Review and respond to feedback; make changes if needed. Provide overall final scan of material.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Masters in English from Santa Clara University. Published in newspapers, magazines, journals, and websites. 25 + years teaching college writing and literature courses.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
To paraphrase the essayist, H.L. Mencken, I didn't decide. I was simply born to work with words and ideas. Teaching came as naturally. My 4th grade teacher asked me to help a student with reading. At recess, Anne and I went and sat under a tree and I helped her read EB White's Charlotte Web. I guess my teaching career started under that tree, in 4th grade.
What types of customers have you worked with?
There are no "types." Everyone is an individual, and I approach each writer, student, and project as unique. So each project is engaging, fascinating, and creative.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I've recently helped write three WEDDING SPEECHES. So much fun! And my clients loved them. I get to know the Best Man or the friend giving the speech, and try to put my client's personality, sense of humor, sentiments into the speech. I think this is the most fun I've had as a writer in the past year or so.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Be sure the editor knows precisely where to use an apostrophe, a semi-colon, and a colon. But also be sure the editor respects the voice of the writer.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
For a writer: Does the writer seem truly interested in my material and my subject? For an editor: Does the editor know where to place an apostrophe, but also respect my voice, my tone, my expressiveness? For a tutor: Does the tutor understand my learning process? What are some activities the tutor has students do to improve their skills?
