Reading and Writing Tutoring

Walter and I worked on marketing material.
I recently needed to send a sensitive email to teachers and administrators at my college. It had to catch everyone's attention, explain a complicated issue, offend no one, and lead to action. After trying unsuccessfully to write it myself, I turned to Laura. She asked me some questions to clarify her understanding of the situation, and she quickly wrote exactly what I needed. Not only was it well-written, it was effective. The responses to the email were exactly what I had hoped for. Laura is personable, smart, and a good writer. She has been my go-to writer and editor for many years, and I recommend her highly.Jun 9, 2015

It’s a pleasure learning every week with Laura whether we meet at the library, the coffee shop or go for a walk! She is an amazing teacher who quickly identify the area I need to develop and provide the support I need to make good progresses. I strongly recommend her to anyone who would like to learn a new language.May 23, 2018Verified
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?I lower my rate for more frequent tutoring sessions. I usually ask for payment in advance, and can therefore allow make-ups. Editing rates vary, depending on type of editing, and we discuss the differences up front. I discount for extended projects. If a project goes more quickly than anticipated, fee goes down.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?FOR EDITORIAL SERVICES: Request and review sample of the work to edit. Determine nature of work: proofing, editing, rewriting, or writing. Talk things over with client. Provide clear timeline and fee structure. Provide regular updates on work, and receive feedback. Review and respond to feedback; make changes if needed. Provide overall final scan of material. FOR TUTORING: Meet with student in person or at least over phone. Talk, informally. Get to know each other. Determine if we would LIKE to work together. If so, assess student skills. Set up tentative program. Get to work. Enjoy.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?Masters in English from Santa Clara University. Published in newspapers, magazines, journals, and websites. 25 + years teaching college writing and literature courses.
