Dennis and his Aznew workers did a great job on our deck and made it better than we expected. They were busy, courteous and worked without any need for our well thought out advice. I would highly recommend Aznew.

Mike did a great job! He installed a gate on my deck - and matched it perfectly with the railing that already existed. He asked what I wanted, listened actively, and delivered exactly what I asked for. He also installed a dog door so that my pooch can go out onto the deck whether I'm home or not. I am super happy with the work and will ask Mike to come back again when I'm ready for the next project. Thank you Mike!

Steve and Judah did fine work on a big, miscellaneous project -- the deck they finished for us looks great! They also replaced a disposal that broke while they were here. They were friendly and so easy to deal with. I didn't even mind waking up extra early to open gates, etc. Pleasant, nice, nice people. Still a few bits of plastic I should have pointed out at the final walk-around/check-off. I will hire them again.

Todd moved a spa and removed a deck. He was thorough and cleared the site completely and even disconnected the spa wiring in a way that it can be reused in the future. I will hire him again.

I hired Phili and his team to remove a large amount of bamboo from my yard. They did an amazing job and worked so hard. I was so happy I chose to hire them to help with this challenging project. My fear was not having the bamboo removed completely and having to deal with it growing back. After watching Phili and his crew remove the bamboo, I feel great about the removal process and its success. They completely transformed my yard by installing a paver patio area as well. I am so happy with their work, very professional looking. They took my design ideas and made them happen. I found them really easy to work with and talk to. I highly recommend them! Great pricing compared to others, while still getting great results. Thank you again Phili!

1 review 6/11/2017 Professional, efficient, and affordable. They also have an ingenious billing system that allowed me to control expenses and monitor day to day activities. This was critical to me as I live four hours from the project site and could not check work in person. I received daily reports on status and costs. Buying blocks of time, and paying for materials in real time, keeps the project costs from getting out of hand. My project consisted of 1. removing dry rot from leaking French doors in second floor bedroom and on balcony, 2. replacing subflooring and balcony deck, 3. removing and replacing replacing a wooden gate, 4. removing and replacing garage side door, 5. painting deck, gate, and interior molding, 6. removing French doors, and 7. hauling away debris. I will definitely hire Spectrum again!

Cory King removed a large sofa recliner for me in Rancho Murieta. He was in & out in less than 10 minutes. He replied to my first email request for help within a couple of hours. He was available same day to remove my sofa. He called to communicate when to expect him and he was on time. He was prompt, courteous and professional.

Nate has done a great job in doing a deck on a very difficult sloppy terrain. The deck size ~900 sq. feet. The deck was done using redwood, the railing was very creative solution as the products in the store were very expensive. The railing was custom and so was the whole deck.

Fatos jumped right on the project. Replaced the water heater for a competitive price. Did it in one evening and got my tenant hot water before the next day. Our tenant was happy and I was happy. Thank you Fatos.

We hired Esdras for two jobs around our house. Esdras did an entrance door step remodeling for us which required some skills to customize this project. Since he did a great job we asked him to fix our two entrance gates to the backyard and to install some improvements around the landing deck of our pool area. All the jobs were accomplished in a timely manner with attention to detail. Esdras is very punctual, easy to talk to and courteous. The pricing for the project is absolutely fair without any surprises. We will definitely hire Esdras again for one of our next projects around the house.

I hired Patrick to remove the leaves off my roof and clean my gutters. Not only did he clean the leaves off the roof, he pressure washed the moss off the roof. He cleaned all the leaves off the ground, and then pressure washed my decks. I paid him %40 more than his bid. He really over delivered. I wish all people worked this hard and delivered this well. I can't wait to hire him again.

Shawn McCool has done three or four projects for us, from installing window shutters to rebuilding a deck at our Tahoe cabin to electrical work at our home. His work has always been first class, his pricing fair and his responsiveness above the norm for contractors. I recommend him highly.

I hired Mike originally to remove a deck and slider and put in french doors and a juliette balcony. Then had him do 2 4x6' windows. The work has been great and he is easy to work with. Now looking at him doing our guest bath and then the master bath. Saw his work on other projects prior to hiring and it was quality work well done. He has been responsive with email and text progress updates and his billing is spot on the quotes no surprises. Job well done so far!

Jerry suggested I paint my old redwood deck with rustoleum and did a great job. He also found some boards that were rotting (the deck is 25 years out) and worked hard in replacing those too.

Brendan was the best finish Carpenter that I have seen. He completed my base board trim in one day. Then went on to rebuild my deck. All his work was great. He was on time and worked hard the full day. I would highly recommend him for any job.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
