I was very happy with H.P. Services. Rudy did great work on plumbing my bathroom for a remodel. One thing I appreciated, second only to his workmanship, was his communication. He was concise and knowledgeable. Prior to the job and throughout, Rudy explained all my options well. This helped me feel very comfortable hiring him. Rudy and his partner were tidy, efficient, personable and fair. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone or hire him again.

Richard Hynes is a very detailed professional. Upon meeting Richard I felt comfortable about the project. We originally wanted to order materials for the project and he had suggested to me that he would order any materials and provide us with the receipts. Luckily we let him order the material as it turns out the ones we wanted to order were undersized for our project. Richard came and seismically retrofitted our home. He also helped us on our kitchen and bathroom remodels while managing the project the whole way, hiring subs, coordinating between myself and subcontractors and achieving the results desired. Richards pricing was 20% cheaper compared to licensed professionals in the area. We are so glad to have had his help, as the previous worker we hired from thumbtack turned out to be unlicensed at a cheaper price, but ended up costing us a lot more money in the long run.

Tony was very responsive. He get the work done on a timely matter. He is knowledgeable and trustworthy . I chose to work with Tony after interviewing several professionals in the area since Tony not only pointed out all the issues but also very straight forward in terms of fees (which was reasonable to me while others made me feel uneasy not stating the estimated fee due to 'uncertainty matters' or giving quote that surprisingly high.) He updated me the progress with photos. The work was done at my rental property and my tenants spoke highly about Tony who is respectful and nice. Here is the work he's done at my property Plumbing for the irrigation system Bathroom plumbing Replaced water heater (picked up new one from the store and hauled away the old) Remove the old and built the new platform for water heater I am very pleased with the result and will definitely work with Tony again in the future

We hired Juan immediately for a bathroom remodel. He was professional, confident and had a new contracting business after working for someone else for 15 yrs. He did our job very quickly. Most work was very good. He is not a finished carpenter, so when we didn't like something, he brought in a friend to do the final touches. He was responsive to correction and was committed to our satisfaction. Rates were fair.

As a homeowner that has been managing my home remodel I have dealt with a lot of people, Kris has blown everyone out of the water. My only regret is that I did not meet him sooner. He is such an easy guy to deal with as well as being rigorous with very high standards. His workers are also amazing. Many people have worked on our house over the past years but his guys have been the best by far. I am so sad to see them go. I wish I had more work for them to do.

Geoffrey returned my initial inquiry very promptly, came to my house and gave me an estimate for repairing and painting damaged walls, baseboards and door trim; re-grouting, cleaning and sealing two bathroom floors; repairing a very damaged fence and building a small retaining wall. The work quality was outstanding - I feel that working with Geoffry was of great value and will undoubably call him again for future projects!!!

Giving a thumbs up to Fatos for his work remodeling and extending an outside deck. He works by the hour with direct reimbursement for materials. His workmanship is top notch and I am very satisfied with the end product His initial estimate of about two weeks for this project was about right. I had the initial estimated quantity of materials delivered and paid for, then he got the rest ad-hoc as needed for which I reimbursed him. I've done plenty of construction myself, both contracting and with a hammer. But I wanted this done quickly and didn't have the time myself (mom's house in Napa) as I don't live nearby. Was a little nervous about the hourly arrangement as this can remove incentive to get work done timely and pad the bill, especially as I couldn't be there constantly to oversee. Happy to say Fatos worked hard and honestly and I feel I got good value for the money. To be clear he is a handyman, not a licensed contractor. This means liability is on the customer and any potential dispute resolution can be murkey. With that said, I recommend him for your small to medium sized projects.

I hired Sergey and his team to do a complete Bathroom and a partial Kitchen remodel. Having gotten quotes from multiple contractors, we settled on Sergey as his quote was reasonable, but more importantly he promised a quick turn around time. I admit, initially I did not believe the job would be done so quickly, and was mentally prepared for a 1.5X - 2X factor. Not only did they finish the job within the promised time frame, I think they might have been a day or so early. However, that does not mean they did a shoddy job - in fact they strived for perfection in every aspect. For example, the vanity we ordered for the bathroom, had crooked angles as it hadn’t been assembled properly. It was very minor and I was ok with it - however they decided to take their time to fix someone else’s bad work before installing because ‘it was not right’. This came through in every aspect of the job. The team that worked on our house was also very professional, always on time, and cleaned up after themselves everyday, unlike some other contractors I have worked with who leave the place as a war zone until the entire job is done. I am glad I found Wise Stage Remodeling and will be using them for all my future remodeling jobs, and would recommend them to everyone I know.

I would highly recommend Shaz Construction! We needed kitchen & bathroom remodeling and looked at a few companies, but am glad we chose Shaz Construction. Not only Shaz helped us with re-designing our kitchen and bathroom, he made it look fabulous. We had no idea on what types of products to select to match this design and he assisted every step of the way. Shaz even gave us tips which ended up saving us money. Shaz paid close attention to detail and ensured that everything ran smoothly with quality workmanship. Shaz is extremely professional and easy to work with, and kept us informed all the time. We could not be happier with our kitchen & bathroom. We could not be happier with our kitchen & bathroom transformation. When people walk in, they are blown away at the difference. It is amazing what a new kitchen and bathroom can do to your house. I have recommended Shaz to everyone and would do it all over again with him. If you are looking for a contractor Shaz is definitely the person you want to select.

I recently had a water leak outside my home and called Rusteen's House of Plumbing to resolve the issue. Chris was very courteous and helpful, assuring me he would be out to my house within hour. When the Chris arrived, he put foot coverings over his shoes before entering my home, and was dressed very professionally. He offered to provide a free plumbing inspection on site to let me know if there were any other issues I should be aware of. He even fixed the faucet in my bathroom which had been bothering me for over a year! He gave me an "Option Sheet" before beginning any of the work so that I was made fully aware of what work was going to be performed, as well as exactly how much it was going to cost. There were no hidden fees or surprises. When Chris was done, I recieved a call the next day to make absolutely sure that I was 100% satisfied with the work performed and asked if I needed anything. He even asked me if there was anything he could have done to improve the service! Rusteen's House of Plumbing is amazing! Rusteen's House of Plumbing is the only plumber I will ever call again!!

GreenRun remodeled a bathroom in my home in the summer of 2014 and just recently (June 2015) replaced the roof of my house. Rodney Jansen, the owner/contractor of GreenRun, is professional in the way in which he interacts with you as the customer. He is able to instill confidence without pressure. Rodney and his crew were punctual, courteous and, at the end of the workday, cleaned up the work site. I would wholeheartedly recommend GreenRun to family and friends. Hanna S.

I had three criteria when searching for a contractor: Quality, Honesty, and Communication. Sam passes all three tests with flying colors. I've already recommended Sam to friends and family, and wouldn't hestitate to do it again. After my father passed, we needed someone to renovate my parents' former rental. The last tenant did a number on the place and it was already showing its age. Sam was aware of the significance of this project to my family and was very conscientious about keeping within the budget. He rebuilt the inside of the entire house including all new plumbing, electrical, and insulation. Mom was so happy with Sam's work that she had him remodel her own kitchen and bathroom. It's very difficult to find a contractor with a balance of craftmanship, honesty, and effective communication. Don't hesitate to give Sam a call!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
