Marlon installed an over the range microwave for us and was very prompt and courteous. The job was difficult since venting the oven out the back required cutting a hole in the exterior brick wall. The job was further complicated by being high up on the exterior wall requiring cutting the brick with a circular saw while balancing on a ladder! It took him most of the day, but his price was fair for the amount of work and the degree of difficulty. I would have him back! Thanks Marlon!

Yakima Construction installed a wall and sliding door for me. They also built a storage/closet area in my garage. They were very professional and extremely clean. They finished the whole project in a very timely manor. I am very impressed and will definitely use them again.

We had an issue where the previous homeowners built their deck around the pool cover mechanism of the pool. Needed an access point created to get to it. Andrew Scott Builders did a great and quality job creating that access point. Went above and beyond. Would highly recommend again for future projects!

Matt helped us with a variety of jobs related to our kitchen renovation. We had a very outdated (1940-1950's era) kitchen, and were working to renovate through IKEA. A group associated with IKEA installed new cabinets and countertops, and Matt did literally EVERYTHING else. He performed a difficult demo and prepped our walls for install, and afterwards worked to finish all other aspects of our project- including new tile flooring, cutting for and installing a new sink, and properly installing a microwave/hood combo. These tasks are only a small portion of the total body of work Matt completed however. All told, this was a BIG project for a relatively small kitchen; nonetheless we could not have been more pleased with Matt's craftsmanship, attention to detail, and thoroughness. Matt did not leave anything undone and is clearly passionate about providing the best work possible. Communicating and working with Matt was very easy & straightforward, and there were never any questions about the job being done or the quality of work. Even when we asked Matt do perform additional duties midway through out project, he was flexible in incorporating these additions in. We could not be more happy with our new kitchen and would highly recommend Matt & Big Red Innovations to others (and we will likely be working with him again in the future!).

The great reviews Lanzarone Construction LLC has on Thumbtack are true, and after meeting John Lanzarone you’ll find he is very easygoing, a pleasure to work with, and a masterful craftsman. I hired John to do my basement framing/fire blocking (including a family area, bedroom, and bathroom), and his work is very impressive. The area John was framing was not easy but John completed the work ahead of his original estimate, and I could not be more satisfied with the results. I found John and his brother Chuck to be very caring, very trustworthy, neat, and their work is of the highest caliber. I plan on bringing them back to install doors and do the trim work once the wall boarding is completed. If you want the work done right, orderly, and at a fair price, I highly recommend you hire John and Chuck. I guarantee you’ll be happy you did.

Conrad converted a bath to shower for us last year and dI'd a great job. This year he did several things during one job at our new home. He installed fan vents in the bathrooms, mudded and textured the wall around a door we had installed and installed a garbage disposal in the kitchen. All of the work was well done. There was quite a bit of rescheduling due to family needs and conflicting emergency jobs; however, he worked with our schedule to be sure we were taken care of in a timely manner.

Fran built our house from start to finish. We still have the basement to finish. It is a rather large house. The quality of the work was excellent. He custom built our home and we love it. He had a lot of very good suggestions. He and his crew were always polite, friendly and cooperative. They were good and courteous to one another. We were around them for approximately six months or more. The things we had trouble with were the work seemed to have taken longer as there would be days when there was no one doing anything. We understand that we were not his only clients and he had to manage the crews. We were always around, which in talking with other people who have had their houses built, most builders do not want or allow. We have a few things which still need to be finished. I feel Fran will do them but it is difficult to work around. The other thing is that I felt, then and now, that if the premises were kept more clean with less clutter they would be able to work more easily. As it was. one group doing staining left. some rags in a pile. When they caught fire there was a lot of damage with the smoke. I will say that they got busy and cleaned the walls redid the painting, repaired the damage and concentrated on getting rid of the smoke smell which was quite extensive. All in all I would recommend having Fran do the work.because in the end the quality is there

Completed three jobs for us. 1) added below the surface pipe drainage from existing close-to-house sub pump of about 15 yards. Solved problem of way too much water in back yard 2) finished, with insulation, dry wall etc. the unfinished garage 3) took AC compressor off mounting bracket attached to house and built and placed on concrete pad to lessen vibration and noise. including re-doing outside compressor pipes etc. All jobs done very well and solved existing problems. Roy explained every step and process and why. Jobs were completed timely and as inexpensively as possible. Would re-hire, and would recommend to anybody, anytime.

Jim and his Crew do excellent work. We have been looking for contractors, builders, finishers and all kinds of people to hire to finish our basement, and we ended up going with Jim and Integrity Remodeling. Are we glad we did!! Jim does most all the work himself with his own employee which saved us on having to hire a contractor and pay them to hire out other companies to complete the job in pieces. With Jim and his employee, we knew who we were getting, he talked to us everyday and kept us up to date on the process, and is very easy to talk to. He gives great recommendations and sure does know what he is doing. I recommend him to anyone who is looking for a basement finish, remodel, service or anything of that nature. We plan to use him to help us with our upstairs remodel now!! Thanks Jim!!!

Thomas from Red Sky Builders did a great job. We were having trouble finding someone who would do the repairs because it was a small job. But Thomas was a life saver. He was quick to respond and answered all our questions thoroughly. Thomas was even willing to work on the weekend to fix our leaking exterior window. He was fast and efficient and I'll definitely call him again when we need work done. I would absolutely recommend him.

Colorado-Designs is amazing. In an age where just getting a contractor to return your phone call is nearly impossible, the communication, professionalism, and quality of work they provide is exceptional. For years we've had an unfinished space over the garage that we always dreamed would be a library. Not a study or home office, but a proper library. The space itself was funky with multiple ceiling crests and wall nooks, and all the builders I interviewed simply didn't get the aesthetic we were going for in our bookshelves. They all just wanted to fill the space with rectangular box bookshelves, in some cases pre-ordered from commercial cabinet makers, and generally for ridiculous prices. Davis understood our vision from the start and made something that is stunning and unique. His price was competitive, and the quality he delivered for it outstanding. They aren't happy until you're happy, and it shows in their product. Thanks to Colorado-Designs for turning a long time dream into an awesome reality.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
