Sue C. says, "I would have given White Mountain 5 stars if the time involved and the owner’s (Mel) oversight had been better, but overall I was very happy with the work, and the price was significantly lower than other bids I received. My project included rebuilding brick garage walls that had literally crumbled and some minor tuckpointing on the front of the house. The first estimate I received to fix the garage was $14,000(!); White Mountain charged less than $3000 and the mason Raul did an EXCELLENT job with this. At first I was not happy with the tuckpointing on the front of the house because the grout used was a different color than the original, but Raul re-did this and the result was much better. The reasons I did not give a five star rating are 1) After the original work was done I found that part of the garage wasn’t finished and I called to have Raul return. He did return and finish the job, but it took a very long time to accomplish this. The project was started September 23rd and finished October 1st, but it took until October 31st to complete everything with the corrections. 2) Mel (the owner) did not come over to check the work while it was being done or after is was completed. I was mostly pleased with the company: Mel communicated well and always responded promptly to messages I left for him; Raul was prompt, reliable and did great work and as I said, the price was fantastic. I did become frustrated toward the end while I was waiting for the job to be completed and I feel that this could have been accomplished more quickly than it was. If you are a patient person and not in a hurry to complete your project you will be very happy with White Mountain Masonry!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need to rototill before laying sod?

Whether you rototill before laying sod depends on your preference, but your ground needs to be prepared for the sod to take root in the soil. A rototiller makes it easy to till up compacted earth so that new sod can easily take hold, but there are other methods you can do. Consult with a sodding professional to discuss which preparation steps should take place before laying sod.

Who can lay sod near me?

Landscapers and sod installation specialists can lay sod. When choosing a professional to lay sod in your yard, read their ratings and reviews from customers. Also, search for photos that showcase actual work done by the pro. And always get cost estimates from several sodding professionals so you can get an idea of how much you should pay for their services.

When should you lay sod?

Sod can be laid any time of the year, though the best time to do so is in the spring or early fall. During this time, temperatures are cooler but grass is still growing.

Summer isn’t ideal for laying sod (but still possible), as the high temperatures demand extra watering that can not only drive up your water bill. It can also make conditions ideal for mold and fungi.

Can you lay sod over existing grass?

There are differing opinions about this topic, which is why you should talk to a sodding professional near you to find out if it’s possible to lay sod over your particular lawn. In some cases, it might be possible. For example, some professionals say the new sod will kill the existing grass underneath and release nutrients that will benefit the new sod.

However, others believe the old grass will disrupt the sod's ability to take root in the soil, and it will die due to a lack of nutrients.

How much does it cost to sod your yard?

The national average cost to install sod is around $2,235 and prices typically range from $1,311-$3,808*, according to Thumbtack data. The type of sod you choose, your lawn size, and many other factors can impact how much you'll pay for sodding services.
