Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need to rototill before laying sod?

Whether you rototill before laying sod depends on your preference, but your ground needs to be prepared for the sod to take root in the soil. A rototiller makes it easy to till up compacted earth so that new sod can easily take hold, but there are other methods you can do. Consult with a sodding professional to discuss which preparation steps should take place before laying sod.

Who can lay sod near me?

Landscapers and sod installation specialists can lay sod. When choosing a professional to lay sod in your yard, read their ratings and reviews from customers. Also, search for photos that showcase actual work done by the pro. And always get cost estimates from several sodding professionals so you can get an idea of how much you should pay for their services.

When should you lay sod?

Sod can be laid any time of the year, though the best time to do so is in the spring or early fall. During this time, temperatures are cooler but grass is still growing.

Summer isn’t ideal for laying sod (but still possible), as the high temperatures demand extra watering that can not only drive up your water bill. It can also make conditions ideal for mold and fungi.

Can you lay sod over existing grass?

There are differing opinions about this topic, which is why you should talk to a sodding professional near you to find out if it’s possible to lay sod over your particular lawn. In some cases, it might be possible. For example, some professionals say the new sod will kill the existing grass underneath and release nutrients that will benefit the new sod.

However, others believe the old grass will disrupt the sod's ability to take root in the soil, and it will die due to a lack of nutrients.

How much does it cost to sod your yard?

If you plan on sodding your yard, expect to pay between $250 and $1,250. You can get a better idea of your own cost by requesting free estimates from sodding professionals near you and calculating the square footage of your yard. Other factors will also affect your cost, including delivery prices, any prep work that needs to be done and additional labor costs.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a landscaper or lawn care professional when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a landscaper or lawn care professional, you can take safety precautions on the worksite by not making any physical contact, keeping at least 6 feet between you and the pro(s) at all times and using digital payment platforms instead of cash or check.

Ernesto is great! He is responsive, diligent, kind and a very hard worker. His prices are fair, unlike most landscapers out there, and he does impeccable work. We hired him to redo our backyard (new sod, mulch beds) and ended up also having him remove and pour a new concrete patio, plant all our new shrubs and trees, and put down new sod, edging and mulch in our front yard. We highly recommend Ernesto!

Matt and his crew put installed sod and mulch in our backyard and the end result looks excellent. Matt is easy to work with and completed the agreed upon work at our home on time. It is obvious how hard Matt and his crew work to meet their commitments and they are all knowledgeable in the work that they perform. I would definitely recommend Strohl Scapes.

Ken and his crew killed it. 2 days after providing his quote he kicked off redoing our front yard and finished within 3. He took our mulch, weed ridden yard and added sprinklers, sod and mulch. Cannot speak highly enough of the value, punctuality, and professionalism ken and team has during our project.

We hired the team to level our extremely uneven yard, lay new sod and create a border for planting. They did a fantastic job at half the cost of other companies we spoke with and showed up within a day. The job was done in a single day and they did a great job of protecting the plants we wanted to preserve. Highly recommend for value, turnaround time, and great quality.

Matt and his team did an excellent job bringing our yard back to life. He gave us an in-person estimate a couple days after contacting him and the work was completed just a few weeks later. They replaced the sod, planted some shrubs, adjusted the sprinklers, added a drip line, and mulched the beds. We couldn't be happier with the results. Matt stuck to his schedule and charged a fair price. I wouldn't hesitate to work with Strohl Scapes again!

I am more than happy with the job done by Stone Wolf Masonry and I would recommend them without any hesitation. Nick was professional and personable from start to finish. He and his partner cleared out all the weeds in our yard, leveled the ground and prepared it to lay sod and mulch. They came when they said they would, and they worked quickly, efficiently and with attention to detail. Their original quote spelled out what our costs would be and we received excellent service for a very reasonable price!

We have several problems with the job that Lyman, LLC performed at our home. Communication was poor from the beginning. Execution was poor as well. We have tried to be patient with his slow work progress and mistakes; however, we don't really see any sign of improvement and has he hasn't responded to the issues we have pointed out to him and here: 1. Despite our request to not remove the tree we planted the weekend that we moved into our home, Lyman removed it, claimed it was an accident but also noted that the tree was dead. He replaced the tree with a new one which was nice but didn't completely make up for the mishap. 2. Despite our request to not move the compost bin, his team removed compost bin causing all the compost to spill out. The bin was returned to it’s original spot but upside down. The contents were placed back in the bin along with yard waste and trash, ruining the compost that we had established over the last year. We requested Lyman flip the compost bin back to the correct side. It took him three weeks to actually do that. (see pictures) 3. The pickets of the fence were attached too high so Lyman placed wooden posts on the ground to cover the gap between the ground and the bottom of the fence. We were told that he would build up the soil to meet the fence. Instead, he just put boards to cover the gap, against our wishes. (see pictures) 4. We noticed that one of the pickets was significantly shorter than all the others and informed Lyman of the mistake. He said he would replace the picket with a longer one but instead placed a brick in front of the gap to cover up the hole. The gap and short picket are still here. The brick is absolutely unacceptable way to cover up yet another mistake of his. (see pictures) 5. The posts for the fence were not sawed down. He said that he would saw them down. He has not. (see pictures) 6. Without our consent, Lyman moved the location of the back gate away from the concrete path that travels from our patio to the back alley. When we voiced our concern that the trash cans need a path for rolling (to be placed in the alley each week for trash pick up), Lyman said he would put pavers down so that we could wheel the cans easily. He dropped two pavers in the dirt without leveling them or establishing the functionality of moving the trash cans to and from the alley. (see pictures) 7. Lyman failed to remove all yard waste as written in the contract. We have a pile of dirt and debris still sitting in our yard. (see pictures) 8. According to the contract that Lyman drafted, the last payment was not due until all the work was completed. However, Lyman request the final payment weeks before he was done with the project. We, in good faith, gave him the final check. After that, we were forced to contact him on several occasions to get him to finish the project. He gave various excuses across a three-week time frame as to why he couldn’t come work. He did deliver and install the remaining sod and edging on May 12-13. 9. Certain patches of sod that Lyman installed seemed different than others, seemingly not the same type of grass. Soil prep for the sod was minimal. He promised a second load of compost to till into the ground but that never happened. The ground was also not leveled before sod installation. There are visible dips and rises in the terrain. In the contract, he mentioned that proper grades would be achieved. The grades are inconsistent and erratic. (see picture) 10. The contract was signed on March 23, 2018 and the project was not completed (according to Lyman) until May 13, 2018. It is still not completely done, in our opinion. 11. He has not responded to our texts, calls, or emails. Once he was paid in full, he stopped being responsive. Now, there has been no responses and still the job is incomplete.
