Introduction: Hi - my name is Jeffrey Mince. I'm a long time pro drummer, music educator, and music producer. Music has been my lifelong focus as a performer, but I honestly love teaching and passing along the knowledge of a musical lifetime best. I love teaching, I love practicing and learning, and I love watching my students grow. Music is my life long passion, and I understand that developing the art sense and creativity involved in mastering an instrument can be a hugely beneficial experience that affects all aspects of a student's life. I love that. Plus - rocking out on the drum set rules! In 2009 I left the Los Angeles music industry where I had been signed to a major record label and had been touring and recording internationally, to become a full-time Buddhist Monk. I spent five years studying and teaching Buddhist psychology and philosophy - having given up music completely. In 2014 I decided to give up the ordained life, and in 2015 I returned to music, eventually forming "Mechanic" a collaborative recording & touring project that is releasing it's first record July 2021. Videos about my musical life and journey can be found here: My extensive experiences within the professional music arena and as a music educator have given me the capacity to tailor lessons specific to each student. I have worked with entry level musicians as well as long time players to increase their abilities using practical methods in a light and encouraging atmosphere. Lessons bring results using methods I've learned and incorporated not only in College as a music education major, but also through my own deep commitment to mastering the drum set.

Drum Lessons

I've been working with Jeff to develop some areas where I struggle with my drumming. I am an older student, and have some habits that I need to correct, as well as learn/relearn some basics, like rudiments. I really enjoy working with Jeff because he's able to see where my specific issues are and focuses on addressing those issues with exercises and techniques to get me where I need to be. He also understands how to incorporate my style of playing into our lessons and encourages me to try different methods to lock down whatever goal/activity I am working on. For me, Jeff is by far one of the best instructors I have had over the years. His experience and expertise as a professional drummer and instructor are critical to his ability to guide students to develop into the skilled drummers they want to become. And I can honestly say I really enjoy my classes because they never feel like a chore. This helps me stay focused on my drumming goals and I am very happy with the progress I have seen in my drumming.

Drum Lessons

Jeff has been awesome! Excellent at listening to my goals and helping curate a lesson play to help me reach them. He’s also been able to identify some other areas of improvement I wasn’t aware of. He’s shown excellent amounts of patience with me and my growth as a drummer. Definitely would recommend Jeff if you’re looking to kick your drumming up a notch!

Jeff Mince is not only a world-class drummer, he's a super sweet guy and a great teacher, even for a rank beginner like me, who knew absolutely nothing about drums when I started lessons with him. He's got the kind of patience, humor and generosity of spirit that makes it easy to learn and exciting to explore drumming under his guidance. He customizes his teaching to my needs and likes, and always gives me just enough challenge to learn and improve fast, while keeping it really fun. I feel lucky to have found a teacher this good at such an affordable rate. Top quality instruction and an absolute joy to work with!

Drum Lessons (for children or teenagers)

Jeffrey has been giving my 11 year old drum lessons for a few weeks now. My son has been making great progress and looks forward to his lessons every week. We highly recommend Jeff as a drum teacher.

Drum Lessons (for adults)

At 48, I have never played an instrument but always wanted to try drums. Jeff made me feel comfortable after arriving feeling anxious, and by the end of the lesson I was sitting at the drum kit feeling like it might be possible for an old dog to learn new tricks after all. He has a pleasant demeanor and a way of pointing out how you can improve without making you feel hopeless. Highly recommend giving him a try.

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

My rate is $45 per hour for online lessons, all you need is a computer or phone with a camera, and Skype, Facetime, or Zoom installed. There is absolutely no difference between an online lesson and an in-person lesson. Recommended Student Supplies: Practice Pad, Metronome, Lesson Book, headphones, and Drumsticks. I can help students in locating and purchasing these supplies.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I asses the students skill level and goals, then we begin structured lessons using instructional drum books as well as play along time with music the student enjoys. Lessons are tailored for each student. Students generally start with a combination of stick control exercises using a practice pad (I can help with that purchase if needed), and practical drum set instruction. The student will be assigned goals for practice time in between lessons - again, realizing that each student will have different capacities.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am a university trained music educator and accomplished professional drummer with a wide variety of experience and expertise in many drumming styles including Jazz, Ska, Punk, Reggae, Rock Traditional Country, Swing, Blues, Americana, Latin, Funk, and Afro Beat. I began my career as a professional drummer in high school in Colorado, and continued through college, where I majored in Music with a focus on Music Performance. During this time I played in a wide range of musical projects including Reggae and Ska bands, Indie projects, singer-songwriter projects, Salsa bands, Afro-beat bands, and many more. In addition, I was in demand as a recording session drummer and gained invaluable studio know how and experience through consistently working in Denver area studios. In 1999 I left Colorado for Los Angeles and began playing with the Nina Hagen Band. For more than five years I toured and recorded with Nina nationally and internationally. My experience with Nina was invaluable to my growth as a professional musician, pushing me to perform at the highest level possible, allowing me the opportunity to play many different types of music with many great musicians, and giving me the chance to play at large venues across the globe. In 2005 a deal with Elektra records for the band Ghettoblaster drew me away from the Nina Hagen Band. I recorded and performed with Ghettoblaster coast to coast. My experience with Ghettoblaster took me into nearly every major recording studio in Los Angeles, allowing me to work with some of the most successful and acclaimed record producers, recording engineers, and music industry professionals in the business. Four years later, I decided to step away from music for a time, in order to reflect on my desired future, and to pursue my own spiritual development. Drawn to Buddhism as a path that provided practical methods to find and sustain inner peace, I decided to commit himself fully. I ordained as a western Buddhist monk, and taught Buddhist philosophy and psychology full-time, until 2014, when I felt called again to play music. I believe, that my experiences within the professional music arena and the ordained Buddhist community have endowed me with a unique perspective on life, and valuable skill sets. Today, my aim is to live and work in the highly creative place where these two paths of music and meditation practice converge, —bringing talent, a peaceful mind and good results to every project that I'm involved in.
